Trust me there is nothing to be afraind about with broomstick crocheting. It was the first thing I learned how to do from my MIL. It is just awsome and beautiful and works up so fast. And all I knew how to do when I started was a chain stitch. You'll enjoy learning this one.

You will be using one or the other. Sometimes you'll be able to find a broomstick pin, sold separately, at the store. The ones I usually see are blue and white, made by Boye. However, if you're unable to find one, a size 35 or size 50 knitting needle will do.

It's actually quite easy, once you get the hang of it. It can be a bit fiddly in the beginning, as both of your hands become accustomed to coming into action instead of only the one for the hook. But, after practice, things become more natural, especially after developing your own natural style. :)

I just signed up for this class. I did this years ago and thought it would be fun to do a refresher -- and be accountable with my realm of WIPs. Thinking of a soft lavender color for my DIL for Christmas.........

No, I'm sorry. This is a beginner broomstick lace class and won't include shaping.

I'm excited about this class too. My son is leaving for Afghanistan on Friday - I'm looking for something to keep my mind busy and off of him. Believe it or not, he's happy to go...but I'm the worrier. I have to trust that he'll be OK.
Thanks for having this class!

Give him a hug from all of us and tell him we appreciate his honor and integrity for serving his country. And mom, keep the faith -- he will be in our prayers as you are as well.

Joni, I look forward to seeing you in the class! I was raised my entire life with both my parents being in the US Army. My daughter was less than 6 months' old when my mother was sent to Saudia Arabia to serve in Desert Storm, so I completely understand.

Beginner is good. I'm sure the other stuff will come in due time.:yes Been practicing as the large needle is a bit awkward, slow process. 2 simple sc 3 loop dishcloths finished with a smaller needle & guessed the hk sz. No edging as they look fine. Without a pattern, how would one know what sz hk is used with what sz needle?
