Okay I have just spent the better part of an hour and a half looking for a pattern / idea for my DD's BF. He is in the Navy - Shore Patrol. Is there any special symbol for SP's? I know the Navy mascot is the goat. I was thinking of making him a monkey with navy colors or a mock uniform, or an amigurumi goat. Any ideas are welcome.

As much as I would love to suggest a crocheted stuffie for your dd's bf(especially since I know where there is one and I don't think I can link to it since it's mine), he might be laughed at a bit - I was in the service and I'd hate to see that happen..
You could do a naval afghan or scarf. There are sites onliine that you can scan in pictures and it will spit out a chart for you. You can do an anchor with the rope around it. It would be a lot of color changes but it could be done.
You might be better off just doing the navy back ground with the block letters navy worked in to something - like a scarf with the letters stacked on top of each other.
Crocheting for guys is a real bugger sometimes. They don't seem to take to it as much as women do.

I think a hat would be something he would use guys wear them year round and you could add any kind of patch you want.

My ex-husband was a Seabee in the Navy. I found a cross stitch pattern of the Seabee emblem and cross stitched it onto an afghan I had made using the afghan stitch. It looked awesome.

I agree.... a stuffed animal might bring on some teasing from the guys.
I like the idea of a scarf and hat with the emblem - I'm sure it gets cold in the winter on the water and this combo will definitely keep him a bit warmer.
Plus I am sure the others will be jealous when they see your great work. :manyheart
Keep us posted on what you make - hopefully you will post pictures???

Couple quick questions for you. My brother is retired navy and was an MP. Worked hand in hand with the SP and still has friends there. Is there any special branch of the SP your friend is in? Such as the Southwest Border Shore Patrol? Is he an officer? What is his rank? Most symbols include their rank. Does his particular group have a nickname or mascot that is particular to their company? I am trying to get an answer for you and that is what I need to know to get a better idea.

Well Donna, I'm pretty new to all the lingo. I believe his rank is MA3 or 4. That is about all I know. He is stationed at Tinker Air Force base in Oklahoma City, we only get to see him in short stops (usually 24 hour leaves). The Navy has some planes at Tinker so they have their own people guarding them. :D

MA is for Master-at-Arms. There is a MASR, MASN, MA3, MA2, MA1, MAC, MACS, MACM depending on paygrade. I know that he will appreciate whatever you make for him. Here--> http://www.yorktownsailor.com/yorktown/maapatch.jpg is an example of rating stripes for MA1. If he is an MA3, omit the bottom 2 stripes. Maybe you can chart this and make him an afghan or pillow out of it. Since he's on shore duty he has more storage in barracks than on shipboard (or maybe he lives in town???). Hope this gives you an idea. I stood temporary duty as shore patrol when I was an electrician in the navy and it was very good duty.

My dad and my husband were both in the Navy, and I think the idea of an anchor with a rope around it would be great! Here (http://bumperstickers.cafepress.com/item/navy-chief-petty-officer-sticker/20209303) is a picture of the symbol used on the Chief Petty Officer's uniform, but it is also a general symbol of the Navy.
The goat is a symbol of the Naval Academy only. You shouldn't use that unless he went to the Academy.
If you make a hat or a scarf, he wouldn't be able to wear them when he is on duty because he will be wearing his uniform. However, you could make them for when he isn't wearing his uniform.
The Navy colors are Navy blue and gold.
Let us know what you decide on!

Thanks for those ideas. He has only the one stripe.
Mollyanna - Thank you for the info on the goat, he hasn't gone to the academy. That would have been bad on my part. :eek
