Does anyone happen to have an octagon placemat pattern they could share? Or an octagon pattern of part of an afghan they could suggest that would work which is not too "holey." I don't like holes in my placemats..lol. Thanks so much in advance for your help!

you might try looking at simple doily patterns...

if you make a granny type octagon without any ch1 spaces between groups of 3dc it should not be "holey'" The 2 dc in the corners get filled up anyway but the sides stay nice without spaces.

You can find any octagon pattern and just continue it until it's the size you need.

Lion brand has a solid octagon http://www.lionbrand.com/cgi-bin/faq-search.cgi?faqKey=323&store=/stores/eyarn just add rows to reach your desired size.
octagon blanket, just make as many rows as you need http://www.woolcrafting.com/octagon-baby-afghan.html
