A couple of months (or so) ago clearwaters posted a photo of a blue knitted shawl. I was very taken with the shape and made one in crochet. It isn't lacey but is very warm and stays on the shoulders. It has a nice drape in the back. My neighbor consented to model it for me. I will be making more of these. There is a mesh row about every 10th row.

Admin Note:
An exact pattern has not been posted, but in Post #53 (http://www.crochetville.org/forum/showthread.php?t=10213&p=308880) fran says that general instructions are given in two posts: Post #33 (http://www.crochetville.org/forum/showthread.php?t=10213&p=142112) and Post #36 (http://www.crochetville.org/forum/showthread.php?t=10213&p=142404), and should be enough information to make the shawl.

I would love to make one of these for my mom. She is bedbound most the time and a regular shaw is difficult for her to use. Would you be willing to post the pattern?

WOW! You crocheted the 'Pi Square' shawl!! Great job!!! Is there a pattern forthcoming?
fran
July 18, 2005, 06:12 PM
Is that what it's called? I was just going by the photo of the blue knitted shawl that was posted on this forum some time ago. As for the pattern, I didn't think anyone would want it. I was just playin' around.

You did a great job! I had thought about trying to make up a pattern, but you beat me to it. :lol I love the colors you used. It's too hot here for me to be crocheting something so warm. Did you use acrylic or cotton yarn? I can't tell.

I need to make a correction in the actual name of this shawl, it's "Pie Are Square Shawl" and/or "Pi Square Shawl". The original knit pattern is in a book called "Knitting Around" by Elizabeth Zimmerman, published by Schoolhouse Press in 1989.

Thank you for the info, Cheryl. I finally found a pic of it on the net. It's a circle! I didn't know that. Although I did know that pi r squared is the formula for the circumference of a circle. Sounds like she did all sorts of mathmatical calculations. My shawl is the "by guess and by golly" school of math. Ok, ok. I'll write it up just for "U" all at Crochetville.

That is exactly what I have been looking for; but, I am not talented enough to make my own pattern. If you will share your expertise I, and several others will be grateful.
You did a great job. I can do the work, can't do the design.

I love the shawl, and I bet it would work to modify a tree skirt pattern, just start with a bigger starting chain...and that would make doing a pattern easier... is that sort of how you did this? Along the lines of how a Christmas tree skirt is done. That is what it looks like to me in the picture! :clap BTW, when you do make the pattern I think we all want copies!:yay
fran
July 26, 2005, 08:41 PM
Deborah, I don't think a Christmas tree skirt pattern would work. The increases in the shawl are only made in the back, on the middle half of them. That is, I chained 44, hdc in 11, increased evenly on the middle 22 and worked even on the last 11. Of course, the numbers change each time there is an increase. It doesn't show very well in the pic but there are 2 triangular panels in the front that increase from 1 to the equal number stitches of the rows of the back. That's basically the pattern.

If it helps, I used half double crochet stitches and made it about 28 inches long (back measurement). I think there are around 54 rows from the back neck to the center back edge. Increase at the beginning of each row. The two front panels have one straight edge, which is the center front, and one slanted edge, which joins to the slanted edge of the shawl. This makes a shawl piece which is U shaped, with slanted end edges.

Sorry I've been so remiss in getting the pattern out. Several things sidetracked me--including my first granddaughter. But I'm about half finished with it. When I get the baby outfit finished that I'm making I'll get back to it; probably in a couple of days.

Hi Fran! First let me say...WOW!! Beautiful work!! I would love to make this for a friend for Christmas if you have the pattern done. Do I need to put in a request to you for the pattern to be emailed to me or are you planning on posting it here? However you are going to distribute it I would love to have it :D
Take care!

I made this wrap last week, easy, quick, stays put, warm. It is designed for misses size, not plus size (I wear 2x) The neck is fine, but it does not increase fast enough to accomodate my chest so you might need to adjust that,,,also be sure to use a soft worsted, mine was a stiffer yarn and it wants to stick out on the sides,,,,,I plan on making another for myself:yes

You might want to try the All Shawl by Doris Chan. It is a free dowlnoad on Ravelry and on her blog. The shape is very close to that and she gives directions on how to make it bigger. Mine goes around me really well and I'm a 3x. I used I Love This Yarn for mine.
