Fisherman's Sweater

Has anyone made <a href="http://craftyarncouncil.com/projects/jan_crochproj.html" target="_new">this</a> sweater? My b/f wants it for his b-day and I just started it yesterday.

I did the ribbing part but I'm kind of confused about where to start the foundation row. The directions say "With smaller hook, join along edge of ribbing. Work 1 sc in each row along long edge of ribbing" but I don't know which long edge I should be working with.

At the ends of alternating rows when doing the ribbing you ch 1 before turning then don't ch1 before turning so the two long edges are slightly different. Anyone know which long edge it should be?

wow! neat sweater. looks like you've taken on quite a task:eek . unfortunately, i've only attempted 1 sweater, and (trust me) you do NOT want my opinion on this - it was a slight disaster :p

Hmm let's see if I can help some. You have done the 65 or more rows for the ribbing, right? Then you would turn it to the side and with right side facing, join the yarn to start your foundation row. I dont think it matters which side of the ribbing you start on (one side will be the very bottom of the sweater body and the other side will be worked up for the sweater) as long as you have your right side facing and sc the correct number across it for foundation row 1.

Hi, I'm with Chelle on this. I don't think it matters which Long side of the ribbing you start the foundation on. Usually if there is a specific side that you need to start on it'll have you mark it. I've had my eye on that particular pattern for my own DH. You'll have to let us know how it goes. I made one fisherman's sweater years ago when Crochet was new to me, Oh My, it was a toughie.

If this tiny thing I have here is the bottom of the sweater I think this may become a child's sweater.....I thought it was the ribbing of the neck part of the sweater and I'd be working down. Hmm...

Hmmm, I will look at it again. The page wont load for me right now to have a look, but it could very well be the neck ribbing and I was looking at the pattern from the bottom up?

I looked at the pattern, that's the same type of ribbing that I've made on lots of sweaters, typically it looks a little small but it does stretch and since you will be switching to a larger size ( J) hook to do the body it ought to work out fine. But there is a way to do the ribbing after you have the body of the sweater done to whatever size you need, if you feel the ribbing on your pattern is too small. Since I learned this style of making sweater ribbing it has become my favorite way to do it. It works well for the neck and sweater cuffs too.
