Boy Motifs--Turtle, Snail, Snake

Turtle Motif

As always with these motifs, gauge is unimportant, as they can be made with any hook & yarn combo. Please let me know if you come across any obvious mistakes in the pattern, so that I can make corrections.

Materials Used:
G hook
sport weight yarn in two colors (A & B in the pattern) You can, of course, use just one color yarn; I thought it looked more turtle-like with two different colors.

Note: Turning chain-2 counts as one HDC; turning chain-3 counts as one DC.
Note #2: As you crochet, the piece will naturally form a half-circle. This is what is supposed to happen.

Directions:

Chain 2.

Row 1: Sc 4 times in second chain from hook. 4 sc
Row 2: Ch 2 turn. HDC in same st. HDC twice in each remaining stitch. 8 hdc
Row 3: Ch 3, turn. DC in same st. (DC in 1 st, 2 DC in following st) across. 12 dc
Row 4: Ch 1, turn. Sc twice in first st. (Sc once in each of next 2 sts; sc twice in following st) across. 16 sc
Row 5: Ch 2, turn. HDC in same st. (HDC once in each of next 3 sts; HDC twice in following st) across. 20 hdc
Row 6: Ch 3, turn. DC in same st. (DC once in each of next 4 sts; DC twice in following st) across. 24 dc
Row 7: Ch 1, turn. Sc twice in first st. (Sc once in each of next 5 sts; Sc twice in following st) across to end. Do not finish off. Sc in side of row 7. Continue crocheting down the sides of hte rows, putting 1 sc in the sides of the sc rows & 2 sc in the sides of both HDC & DC rows, including 1 sc in the back of the starting chain. 24 sc along bottom (flat) edge.

Row 8: Change to color B. Sc in each st. 24 sc
Row 9: Ch 1, turn. Sc in first 8 sts. *Ch 4. Working in BACK of the chains, sc in 2nd ch from hook & rem. 3 chains.* Sc in next 9 sts. Repeat from * to * once again. Sc in last 7 sts.
Row 10: Ch 1, turn. Sc in each st, including the legs. At "top" of leg, ch 1 before continuing down the other side. DO NOT FINISH OFF 42 sts counting ch-1 at tops of legs
Row 11: Place 1 sc in the side of each of the 3 COLOR B rows. 3 sc
Rows 12 & 13: Ch 1, turn. Sc in each st. 3 sc
Row 14: Ch 1, turn. Sc twice in each st. Sc once in side of row 13 & sl st in side of row 12. 7 sc
Row 15: Ch 1, turn. Sl st in sl sts. Sc in each sc. 7 sc
Row 16: Ch 1, turn. Sl st in each st & in side of row 11. Finish off & weave in ends.

Snail Motif

Materials used here are the same as the turtle.
Note: Snail shell is worked in a continuous spiral. There is no joining chain, so be sure to mark the last st of the round.

Special stitch: SC decl.--draw up one loop in each of next 2 sts. YO & draw through all 3 loops on hook. Or use whatever your usual SC decl. is.

Directions:

Ch 2.
Round 1: 5 sc in 2nd ch. (Allow to form a rough circle.)
Round 2: Sc twice in BackLoopOnly (BLO) of each sc. 10 sc
Round 3: Sc twice in first st. (Sc in 1 st, sc twice in following st) around. 15 sc
Round 4: Sc twice in BLO of first st. (Sc in BLO of 2 sts; sc twice in BLO of following st) around. 20 sc
Round 5: Sc twice in first st. (Sc in 3 sts; sc twice in following st) around. 25 sc
Round 6: Sc twice in BLO of first st. (Sc in BLO of 4 sts; sc twice in BLO of following st) around. 30 sc
Round 7: Sc twice in first st. (SC in 5 sts; sc twice in BLO of following st) around. 35 sc
Round 8: Sc twice in BLO of first st. (SC in BLO of 6 sts; sc twice in BLO of following st) around, changing to color B in last st. 40 sc

Row 9: Sc in 8 sts.
Row 10: Sc in first 7 sts. Sc twice in last st. 9 sc
Row 11: Sc twice in first st. Sc in each remaining st. DO NOT FINISH OFF 10 sc
Row 12: Ch 1, turn. SC in side of rows 11, 10, & 9. sc in row 8 (in same st as where you joined row 9) & in 3 additional row 7 sts. Note: you'll be working up a curve here to form the "neck" of the snail.
Row 13: Ch 1, turn. Sc in first 5 sts, sc decl. over last 2 sts. 6 sc
Row 14: Ch 1, turn. Sc in each st. 6 sc
Row 15: Ch 1, turn. Sc twice in the sides of rows 14, 13, & 12. Sl st into round 8. 6 sc
Row 16: Ch 1, turn. Sc twice in each st. Sl st in 3 sts of row 14. Finish off & weave in ends.

Snake Motif

Gauge is unimportant, as any size hook & yarn can be used. This is an incredibly forgiving pattern, it's OK if you occasionally lose track of your rows & stick one or two extra in the body. ;)

Note that the sc decl. here is the same as described in the previous pattern. Note also that you should always end your row with 4 sc in the body of the snake.

Materials used: G hook & sport weight yarn

Directions:

Ch 2.
Row 1: Sc 4 times in 2nd loop from hook.
Row 2: Sc twice in first st. Sc once in next st. Sc decl over final 2 sts.
Row 3: Sc decl. over first two sts. Sc in next st. Sc twice in final st.
Row 4: Repeat row 2.
Row 5 & 6: Repeat row 3.
Row 7: Repeat row 2.
Row 8: Repeat row 3.
Rows 9 & 10: Repeat row 2.
Row 11: Repeat row 3.
Row 12: Repeat row 2.
Rows 13 & 14: Repeat row 3.
Row 15: Repeat row 2.
Row 16: Repeat row 3.
Rows 17 & 18: Repeat row 2.
Row 20: Repeat row 3.
Row 21: Repeat row 2.
Rows 22, 23, & 24: Ch 1, turn. Sc twice in first st. Sc in each st across to last st. Sc twice in last st. 10 sc at end of row 24
Rows 25 & 25: Ch 1, turn. Sc in each st. 10 sc
Rows 26, 27, & 28: Sc decl. across first two sts. Sc in each st across to final two sts. Sc decl. across final two sts. 4 sc at end of row 28
Row 29: Sc decl. across first two sts. Sc decl. across final two sts. 2 sc
Row 30: Sc in both sts. Finish off & weave in ends.

Crochetfun~ The turtle is indeed in response to the request for one. :) I made up the other two at the same time so that they could all be used together in an afghan, if desired. I was trying to think of critter motifs that said "boy" pretty obviously. The best way to turn these into squares would be, of course, to just sew them to normal granny squares.
