How do you predict how much your project will shrink? Is it mostly trial and error or is there a way to tell?

I"ve never done it before, but I hear that you can always felt it more. (I am assuming it keeps shrinking the more you do it.)

I did a sample square before tackling a real project so I could get an idea of how much it would shrink. I found that the width of the square shrank more than the height. For my sample the width shrank by about a third, the height maybe only by 10 percent. But I am sure this would vary depending on the wool used, the hook size used, the stitch used, how long you felted it etc

Yup; you got it. It's pretty much trial an error. It's an excellent idea to full a swatch, first.
