View Full Version : Mystery crochet along

Stitchstud
September 2, 2009, 02:20 PM
You are invited to join a CAL of a different kind. It's a mystery audio crochet along. It's free to join if you do so before the deadline, but the pattern will eventually be for sale afterwards.

The scoop (as much as can be revealed):

What is the Peacock Track Scarf Mystery Crochet Along?

* It’s FREE!
* It’s an Audio Crochet Along. This means that the hints (stages of
instructions) will be given to you in an audio format. Okay, :think Why? is what I hear some of you asking/wondering. Well..it’s just to try something different. Come on…give it a try.
* The mystery lies in having to wait for the different stages of
instructions, and not knowing what the scarf will look like.
* If you have basic to low-intermediate skills you will be comfortable.
* Once you attempt a stage with audio instructions and post your
successes/attempts/confusions/whining you will receive a symbol chart AND text
version of that stage.
* There will be a variety of lengths in wait times between stages depending
on the amount that will be crocheted.
* You will receive a full version of the pattern in PDF format at the end of
the CAL.
* This group will be closed after the final deadline and the pattern will
subsequently be available for sale to the general public.
* Sign-ups start now and will end Sept. 12. The CAL signups will not be available
after that date. The first audio will be posted the 13th. We should be done be mid-November, roughly.
* Supplies: 800 yards (200 gms) of 3-ply (lightweight) sock yarn. (Symbol #1
from yarnstandards.com (http://www.yarnstandards.com/weight.html)). If you use a multi-coloured yarn, you’ll want the
colours to be similar in value, no dramatic dark/light contrasts, so that the
lace is visible. 3.5mm (US E/4) Hook.
* Gauge: you’ll find out more if you sign up.
* Finished Dimensions: 9.5 x 44 inches
* By joining this CAL, you are agreeing to not share any part of the pattern
in any format with any non-group member. The pattern will be available for sale
one the period of ‘exclusivity’ is over.
* To access the files and group discussion, you will have to join this Google Group. If you already have gmail or other Google Membership service, then you can use that login and go here (http://groups.google.ca/group/scarf-cal).
* will use North American terms in audio version, charts are not term
specific, text will have both UK and North American versions.
* stitches used: chain st, slip st (thru both loops), single crochet, double
crochet,
* double treble stitch instructional video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Ehv1Defp-U)
* triple treble stitch instructional video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V1M2c9RymIg)

If you wish to join the CAL but are not a Google member, please send me an email at stitchstud@gmail.com with ScarfCAL in the subject line.

Once the CAL has started, please do not discuss it here on Crocheville.

After signing up, go to this page (http://groups.google.ca/group/scarf-cal/web/welcome) for more detailed information.

The sign-up will close at 11:59pm EST on Sept. 12, 2009

Sounds interesting....just applied through Google, or at least I think I did.

It does sound interesting, except for the audio part. I have a hard enough time understanding American accents in ordinary conversation, and I certainly wouldn't be able to follow spoken crochet instructions.

Donna and I both had the opportunity to meet Charles (aka StitchStud!) at Chain Link, and he is a fabulous and innovative designer! I'm sure everyone who participates will have a terrific time in this CAL.

I think I'll head over and sign up myself!

If you can find a 50-50 cotton-acrylic blend you'll be much happier than with straight cotton, because you need a little lightness. Tencel is fabulous.

Will turn out more like a stole (http://www.herrschners.ca/Product/Lion+Brand+Vannas+Glamour+Yarn+1.aspx) and you'll need a larger hook.

Ooo, Thanks for the list!! That's so helpful!!!!!!

I'm thinking about getting some of the elan you listed. It's only 2.48 a skien and that puts it just barely over a cent a yard which is cheaper than some of the cheaper yarns I've seen around.

I hope I don't sound like to much of a cheapy. Just trying to get more bang for my buck. :-D

Ok, I ended up ordering some sock yarn off of elan for the shawl. It's "super sock something" or "sock it to me" or something like that. It was super decently priced and I liked the colors. Ended up buying 10 skeins of it. Once the scarf is done I'll have plenty of yarn left over for a few pairs of knitted socks.

Caron Spa is probably too heavyweight. Charles has suggested fingering weight, or #1, yarns.

I just ordered 4 Cascade Cherub 4ply from Webs, couldn't beat that price and I love the color. I just hope it gets here in time!

I have a whole bunch of pink fingering weight yarn that I picked up on clearance a while back. Hope fully it is enough. If not, I also have a bunch of very fine baby yarn in a pretty blue shade.

I can just imagine what my hubby will say, when I start listening to crochet patterns......

Hi.
I've just read through all the posts here. I hope that everyone who has been waiting for approval to get into the group got their emails in a timely fashion. I've been trying to approve joiners every 12 hours if my other duties in life, and my job allow it. :)

We are nearly ready to go. Does anyone have questions about the audio files, how to send pictures, or anything else?

We are almost ready for takeoff!

Best,
Charles

I had just finished a star baby blanket not long before that that she watched me make. This sounds like something nice I can send my dil for christmas. :wreath My son just joined the Air Force and his first duty station is Vandenberge AFB in California. They're complaining about the cold :wcold in the evenings. lol They'll feel it more cause we're from Guam where its hot :hot all year long. :lol

Thanks Charles. I was just looking at the list of yarn choices you listed. There's no way I can get anything like that here. Would sock yarn be okay? And how about LB's Pound of love yarn or maybe tlc's baby yarn? Those I have. Waiting to hear back. Thanks.

sock yarn is great...the finer, the better. Some sock yarn is almost DK or heavy sport weight, so you would need to up the hook size. :hook If you have some around, what is the knitting gauge (sts per 4")? If it is less than 28 sts per 4" then you'll need to use a size F,G or H to get the drape, non stiff feel and the scarf will be wider (the length can be adjusted) TLS recommends a G hook (knitting gauge 22 sts/4") Pound of love would not work at all...it's worsted weight. When you say you can't get it "here" where is "here"? :think

How many balls of sock yarn? i have 2 skeins of purple sock yarn. that i just rolled into balls. what is the other suggested.. Madyson just got a box of yarn in the mail ysterday. and there is some nice thin ones.. I would love to suprise her with a shawl to go with her hats!

Stitchstud
September 11, 2009, 02:27 PM
The sock yarn should weigh at least 200 grams, or about 8 ounces. Same with the other fine/thin yarn.

"Here" is the Island of Guam in the pacific. There is only one craft store where you can get any kind of yarn and sometimes the selection is not that great. It takes them a very long time to get any new shipments in. Oh, and did I mention that because we have to ship everything in to the Island I pay about double what the ladies in the states pay for thiers? Thats why my "stash" is not as big as most others.

Sorry. I just saw this today. Baby yarn will be the right thickness, but you'll need to set the acrylic for the scarf to look right. I'll be giving instructions on that in the group.
