Hi Kim,
I ordered my broomstick lace pin today and paid for my class, so I guess I just commited myself to a new experience. Actually I am really looking forwarded to learning a new technique. Can't wait. Hope my needle gets here in time, I already have the yarn in my stash.

I just wanted to say that I took this class when it was offered previously, and I did not have a broomstick pin so I cut a strip of cardboard to work over. That worked very well.

(It's a good class!:) )

It is possible, although not necessarily easy, to work these stitches without an actual broomstick pin or large knitting needle. As magiccrochetfan said, she used a piece of cardboard. I would imagine that a ruler, if it's very smooth would work. And, if all else fails, the end of a broom. After all, I'm pretty sure that a broom is what was used in the beginning, hence the name broomstick. I've never used one, but I don't see why it wouldn't work for you.

dowel rods are cheap and would also work well.

I just signed up for this class and I'm looking forward to it. I do have the large knitting needle since I've played with broomstick before (but have already forgotten how I did it :).

I've gotten away from crocheting for the last few months so it will be fun to get back into it. Kim, can you tell us the finished size of the shawl?

My shawl is about 60" long. You can make it any length you like. And, the width can be easily adjusted. Some former students made scarves.
