View Full Version : My crochet (and needlework) sightings

I had my favorite kind of crochet sighting. The in person kind. All crochet sightings are fun to report, but my favorite ones are the ones when you see someone crocheting. I was at the car dealership waiting for my oil change when a lady sat down in the waiting room and stated crocheting. She was making a red baby sweater.
I just love it when I see someone doing any kind of needlework in public. About a month ago I was crocheting in my car while I waited for my son to come out of the store. I looked up and a couple of cars down and across from me a lady was knitting something with fun fur. It looked like it may have been a scarf. I don't think she saw me, but I thought it was funny. Two women sitting in cars not too far from each other knitting and crocheting.
Also, a year ago last January I had surgery. I was so nervous, and while I was in the waiting room before I was "taken in", a woman pulled out her embroidery and stated working on it. Not counted cross stitch; regular old fashioned embroidery. I was actually thinking about that as I went under.

When I worked in a doctor's office, there were times we'd see a patient crocheting in the waiting room. I'd usually bring my things to show off to my co-workers when I'd completed them, and if I could I'd force those patients to see them too. I had a printout of the round ripple afghan I'd made on my desk one day; I was showing it to a girl I worked with to see if she wanted one. A patient's husband saw it and asked her if she could do that. The woman looked at the picture and asked if it was crochet or knit. I said crochet, she actually giggled (and I can relate to the feeling), and said she probably could. I told her what to hunt for online and she was very excited. I loved her husband though, he sounded just like my sweetheart. Approving and proud but liking to tease her a little about "all that yarn."

I saw some crocheted scarves for sale in two different shops today, and a crocheted wrap in another. Does that count?

I sometimes also crochet in the car on long trips and one day on a trip went into a walmart and a lady buying yarn as well taught me a new stitch right there in the store was nice. And I also did have a surgery a couple years ago and was crocheting while waiting to go in and I gave my doctor a pair of slippers I crocheted for her she loved then and she sure did a wonderful job on the surgery too.

I'm really bad. Whenever I crochet in the car, I always set it on the dashboard when we go into a store. I suppose I think there will be a mob of people around the car waiting to see who is stitching such a fabulous whatever it is... Hasn't happened yet but you never can tell!

LOL, I'd love to have the mob of people...that'd be great! I'm a crocheter in waiting rooms sometimes, but most of the time it doesn't seem worth it. Only on hour long car trips to Boston do I crochet in the car. I'm a frequent visitor to my local hospital and since everyone there knows me, they know to ask what I'm working on now. Most people are envious of the skill, rather than the finished project, I notice. And almost everyone has a grandmother they fondly remember who did some type of yarn craft. I did remember once, passing an older woman working in thread crochet on a waiting couch once, and I enjoyed just watching. Another hospital visit, the mother of a child across the hall from me was knitting. That was somewhat peaceful to watch...her child slept next to her, while she worked quietly. We had a nice conversation one day when I stopped in the doorway to tell her I was a crafter as well, and we talked about what she was making. It was kind of nice, we exchanged secret crafter smiles after that every time one of us passed each other's rooms.

If I'm working on something small enough I will take it with me to work on if Im going somewhere where Im going to be sitting around for a while. I will crochet while my husband is driving, I will crochet in hospital waiting rooms, I even took my crochet with me to the hospital when I had my youngest ~ I dont recall getting much crocheting done though :D . I will crochet while sitting in the car waiting for my 5 yr old to get out of kindergarten. Shoot, I will crochet just about anywhere!
So, people would be sighting me all over the place! hehe.

I had someone crochet sight me the other day while in the McDonald's playroom. On Saturdays after soccer, we usually take the girls there to play for a bit and I always bring a project with me. A lady sat down next to me with her two boys and instantly commented on the fact that I was crocheting. We talked for a bit about the different things we've made. Definitely made the time go faster. :)

I crochet in the car while my son runs into the store, sometimes it takes him a while (he's a browser like his mum). While I'm crocheting, I can see by the conner of my eye when a car parks next to mine and someone gets out. Every once in a while I'll notice a hesitation, and when I look up its usually a someone glancing. A funny thought occurred to me last time this happened. Someone could be writing about a crochet sighting on a board or e-mail list because they saw some woman crocheting in her car. I could be a crochet sighting somewhere. It would really be funny if it happened here on this board. lol

I can't crochet in the car, but I do take it almost everywhere else! I always take it to the dentist office and the gal at the desk almost always asks what I'm working on.
haven't seen a lot of other people crocheting though.

I was crocheting at the football on friday night, 35,000 peopel in the crowd and I'm hooking away, screaming for my team to kick butt, I'm sure it was amusing to passers by (I also wear earplugs because the screaming teenagers drive me nuts so I must be a sight to see)

Since I started crocheting about three months ago, I did it only at home. Now if I'm not going to be driving:lol , I take it with me in the car. I have crocheted on the way to visits, malls etc. Then when I take youngest son to drum lessons, I crochet in the starbucks while I wait for his lesson to end. Oh did it while waiting for daughter to audition for vocal competition. Got looks and comments from non-knitters/crocheters...could tell they weren't used to seeing it. And also someone my age doing it threw them. Funny!:rollin
Then at competition another woman got out her knitting that she started working on and we chatted while we worked and after weird stares, drew quite a crowd. Asking us questions. Seems she had just re-started up after some twenty years and wished she'd thought of it sooner when her kids were in socker and stuff. I agree! :Y I used to read magazines in these situations and now I crochet! Get lots of looks:eek

I know what you mean Amy. I felt uneasy crocheting in public at first. After a while I got used to it, and even now sometimes I won't. I think it depends on the time, place, and general "feel" at the time. 8o
I'm glad your DH is alright. :clap

When Rick had cataract surgery I sat and crocheted in the waiting room too. Until I ran out of yarn - I didn't think I'd get so much done. It kept me calm until they called for me, and I didn't mind people watching what I was doing. I felt like they would have been watching me anyway, you know how it is in a waiting room. Never anything to do but sit and be nervous, so you watch people to pass the time.

I tend bar in a restaurant/ lounge, it's not unusal for me to be crocheting when I'm not busy. Alot of the older women in the restaurant will come up to me and tell me that they crochet. What's unusal is when my older men customers come up to me and know the difference between knitting and crochet(I do both) They have noticed the difference because their mothers or wives are knitters or crocheters. What is really funny is one of the men cringed when another customer of mine picked up my knitting and dropped stitches!!! I am amazed that so many people would even take notice.

Is it just my computer or are some of the emoticons not showing, and therefore not working?

Emoticons are not showing on messages that were posted when all of the Crochetville images were on Pam's web space. They won't show because Pam's web space is gone now. When you type a message at Crochetville, you use : ) or ; ) or whatever to add an emoticon, but when the message posts, ezboard changes that to a permanent image link to wherever the smiley is stored. The location of the smileys on old messages can't be changed without editing each individual message to point them to the new smileys. Does that make sense? :scratchchin

I crochet in my chair, in my car, other people's cars, other peopl's homes, at work since I'm my own boss, in the doctor's office, at the beach, at the poolside, at the mall, and on the airplane and airport. I haven't done it in a restraunt, but I've been tempted. Crocheting for me is like an addiction. Who can't relate to that on this forum? :lol I start, but I cannot stop. I do it so much that it feels weird when I'm not, so I crochet all the time. When I do stop for a second, I'm creating in my mind my next new project. It's a never ending cycle. I'm HOOKED!

I also take mine everywhere! I crochet in my lab while I'm waiting for participants to turn up, at the dentist, on the bus, I took it out to lunch last weekend because I was commissioned to make a pair of handwarmers and wanted to make them as soon as possible. I was out with other volunteers from my call centre. They always love to see what I'm up to!
The only crochet sighting I've ever had (the women in my family are all knitters)was of a girl who was selling crocheted stuff at the monthly university market. I stopped to talk to her but she was a bit snooty, I was going to buy a couple of things from her (she had a nice hot water bottle cover) so I didn't bother :(

I take my crochet everywhere too! When my husband was on the city council I used to always take a project to work on at the meetings. As the meeting sometimes lasted til midnight I got a lot of crocheting done! :hook

I have seen two crocheters and one knitter on the light rail that I take to and from work in downtown Denver.
Both of the crocheters were making afghans/blankets, and the knitter was making what looked like a scarf.
I have crocheted several places, but I don't feel like I would have enough room on the light rail. Too squashed!

I don't see anyone doing any kind of needlework. I was at the grocery store waiting for hubby. An older guy came up to my window to tell me my work was beautiful. As it was it was the swan doily!! :hook :hook
