I was thinkin about crocheting some socks, and this pattern -- http://www.graftonfibers.com/socks.htm
looks good to me, but i was wondering if there was a way to fix how wide at is at the cuff, so it would be a little more snug. I guess i could use a smaller stitch count. does anyone have any ideas to help me? please and thank you.:hook

You can do a couple of things:
* when you chain the stitches around that become the part that goes around the ankle, you can not chain as many stitches in it. I personally wouldn't do this because then the back is smaller than the front.
* do the chain normally, but then put in some decrease stitches evenly spaced around the round.
The nice thing about toes-up socks is that you can try them on as you make them and adjust the pattern to your foot/ankle size. Try working the sock up to the ankle, do the chain step and attach it to the other side of the sock, then try it on. See how it fits. You may not have to adjust it at all (if you're saying this based upon how the picture looks), or you may want to decrease a bit.
One thing -- you don't want to decrease too much because the widest part of your foot tends to be about the same size as the ankle and then your foot increases moving towards the calf. :) So trying it on will make it easier to see how it fits and adjust appropriately.
