View Full Version : Great Guy's Scarf Pattern??

Although in another thread (http://www.crochetville.org/forum/showthread.php?t=12329) , I've admitted to being powerless over my WIPs, I have to think ahead to the holidays (already????), which MAY get me going to transmute some of those WIPs into FOs.
I'm looking for a great, out-of-the-ordinary scarf pattern (or patterns) for guys. There are lots of scarf patterns out there, but most seem too "froo-froo" for a guy, or too "ho-hum." I know that with simple patterns, it's the yarn that helps it go from "ho-hum" to "yum-yum," so I'm open to simple-pattern-great-yarn combos too. But I was hoping to find a wonderful, out-of-the-ordinary scarf pattern for men. I adore Marlo Cairns' Drop-Stitch ribbon scarf on CrochetMe, but -- call me sexist -- I think it's a little too "whatever" for at least some men (at least the men on my list :) ).
Thanks!

I don't know what you think of this one?
Usually, my guys (my husband and my son) find crochet patterns too feminine and refuse to wear them.
I made one hat for my husband, a cabled warm design by Etaria, we'll see this winter if he'll wear it.

I can't see the picture at the sight that was already suggested, but most of the guys I know prefer simple designs, so I'd go with a soft ribbed scarf in a warm wool or wool blend. A simple back loop sc rib is nice and stretchy, easy to bundle up when it's chilly. Or you could do a relief rib stitch, which to me seems more sophisticated and almost looks knit. Even a sc scarf looks great worked in cool stripes.

What is a Relief rib Stitch?

What is a Relief rib Stitch?
it looks like what i know as a fptr (fpdc) which gives a ridge on one side of work. in crochet stitch bible they call it front raised treble :yay
this site is good to see what it looks like and how to do it. :)

Oooooo. That's a nice one! Thanks! Yes, my guys, including Dad, son, father-in-law and five brothers-in-law, also find most crochet too feminine--unless it's an afghan, and even then, they don't semm like open-work that much. I don't mean to sound sexist, I just know the men in my life :).
Thanks again for the pattern!

Edited to add: Do you think that would look nice with a mohair blend, or should I stick to a basic acrylic, acrylic-wool blend, wool worsted?

I think a mohair could be nice as long as it's not too fuzzy, i.e. feminine. It's definitely a luxurious fiber.

I am glad you liked it.
Mohair is beautiful but then again, guys feel different about it:)
I like working w. acrylic/wool mix.

This past Christmas I made two, one for my husband and one for my nephew.
For my nephew I used purple and yellow, his favorite basketball and football team colors. I just double crocheted back and forth. Kind of boring yes but he loved it and it was totally not girly.
For my husband I used red and black and went length wise in the back stitch only. Turned out very masculine. You could try something like that and use some of the 'suede' yarn; either for all or mixed in. That might look good.

Thank you (all) for the great ideas and resources about patterns, stitches, and yarns. I forgot about working on a lengthwise scarf, too. Hmmmm. ;)
And I forgot that guys don't always think of mohair the way we do. Good point. But I'll bet they'll like "suede" yarn. (More Hmmmmm.)

I ran accross this one the other day:

I think I'm going to do it in my brother's Ski Patrol colors, and perhaps alter the fringe and leave out the hat.

I made several scarves for the guys on my gift list last year! I used sc and did alternating blocks (about 8-10 rows per block) of color, using their favorite sports team colors. Good luck!

Thanks again to all for all the links and ideas. The above pattern puzzled me and I'm wondering if I'm missing something: It's simply 22 double crochets and it says to end with an "odd row." If all rows are dc, then what difference does it make if one ends with an odd or even row??? :think
Thanks again,
Lee

My hubby likes the way a simple hdc scarf looks (as opposed to all sc or all dc). His comment was that it looks classy but not boring.
I'm finding this thread very interesting - I'm thinking about making scarves for a "grab bag" basket for Christmas this year and want to make sure I have some appropriately masculine scarves in there.

No problem. I just added this one because there are so few guy patterns, someone may like the hat pattern.
I went back to look at the pattern, the only reason I can think of is to keep the dc direction the same w. the beginning dc row.(maybe?)

I just made one for a friend of mine who moved to Boston. I made it in a "seed stitch" in dark green wool-ease. The stitch is single crochet chain one all the way across. I did it with two strands to make it super-thick. No fringe, stripes, or anything. The thing is that it's less boring than just doing sc or dc or hdc all the way through, without compromising "testosterone approval". I'm also making a matching hat.
Here is a good site:

Good luck!
