If you were to recommend a sock pattern to someone who never crocheted a pair of socks, what would it be?
I have acquired some Bernat sock yarn at my local dollar store and of course I am itching to try.:)

First of all, I wish my dollar store carried Bernat Sock yarn! Seondly, the best bet would be http://www.crochetme.com/issue_1/socks_in_shoes.html.

Check out the pattern links here on the Feet Need Socks Pattern page (http://www.feetneedsocks.com/patterns.html).
I'd vote for the Grafton Fibers toes-up socks (http://www.graftonfibers.com/socks.htm) unless you need a more exact pattern to follow, in which case I'd recommend the South Bay Crochet Toes-up sock pattern (http://members.aol.com/Sbaycgoa/patsock.htm).

Thanks Jess and Deneen. I like them both. I am tempted to to try the Toes up version. Sounds like my kind of pattern. If that works out I might "graduate" to do the other one.
Oh, yes, the yarn was $2.00/ball/Can.:)

I suggest ******************.com socks-these are cuffs down-
Most patterns are written this way-this was also the first pair of socks I made using tlc cotton

Jess,
thanks for the links. I tried the Grafton tow up and actually liked the "Crochet me" ones better. I do like the South Bay pattern though and am going to try them next.

I am pretty new to this, so please excuse this if it is really obvious. In the South Bay Crochet Toes-Up sock pattern (below), it talks about a "coil". What is this? A sock term, or crocheting in the round? Or something else entirely?
Thanks for any help!
