Hi Sisters Hookers
Does anyone know what this stitch is? If so, where can I learn it? I have this afghan. My great aunt made it. My Grandmother has it in her possession but brought it to me so I could figure out what stitch it was since I want to make it for a Christmas gift. It's at least 35 years old and still in great shape, all for a little stain.
Thanks, Laurie

It looks like broomstick lace to me. See here (http://www.crochetcabana.com/specialty/ltc-broomstick_lace_jiffy_lace_.htm).

:think I think it looks like some sort of Hairpin or Broomstick crochet. I have never tried either of them.
Maybe you could google both to see what you can find.
Have fun.
Colleen.:hug

PS, I Googled Broomstick Crochet and the very top item on the list was just what you are looking for, with a drawn diagram for you to follow.
I dont know how to link it to here so you will need to have a look. I found others too and the stitch looks identical.

It looks like broomstick to me, even though I've never done it, and it looks beautiful, especially the green color. Good luck in learning the stitch and making an afghan using it. Please post a picture if you make a blanket :hook

Sisters...
Yes thats it...broomstick...I am almost positive. It looks HARD! There are a couple of women in the Crochet Group of Middle Georgia that know it I was told. The first meeting I go to in a week or so I am going to ask and maybe get some human help or demo. I learn by seeing.
Thank you all so much. I will look at all the links. My Printer is out of INK!!! UGH

I Learned how to do the broom stick stitch when I was younger and I use a Bathroom Plunger as my stick to work on. Its so easy to work with because it stands on the floor. I havent done anything in a long time in Broomstick but now seeing that I want to do something LOL :hook

That's broomstick lace. It's a beautiful pattern stitch and is really easier than it looks. Here's a link to a how to lesson

Here is pic of doing it on my plunger... It is sloppy cause I did it fast just to take pics. Its very easy working on the plunger because it leaves your hands free to work on the crochet and not to worry about holding the large pin needle

Yes that is broomstick lace! It's very easy.

You will need a size 35 or size 50 knitting needle and any size crochet hook recommended for the yarn you are using.

Make a chain as long as you like but make sure the number of chains is divisible by 5.

Draw up a loop in the last chain and place on knitting needle. Draw up a loop through each of the chains and place on knitting needle.

Next, remove 5 loops and holding them together, sc 5 times in the center of the loops; repeat, making sure you have all the loops turned in the same direction.

Repeat the process until the piece is as long as you would like.

Sc around the entire piece.

It's not actually that hard, it's just that the "Large knitting needle" isn't always available for purchase. Don't get me wrong, it's not knitted, but there is a large knitting needle that is used to loop the yarn over and hold, while you are working on the stitch. I've heard, that before this Large knitting needle was designed, women would use the end of a Broom Stick thus giving the stitch it's name. I think they would use an Old Broom Stick and cut it off the broom to about the length of a foot or so.

The last time I worked with this stitch was about 30 years ago. I'll dig out my large knitting needle, which I happened to find at a Hobby Lobby about 2 years ago, and bring it to the Crochet Club meeting.

Hi thanks for the posts! I have not had a change to look at doing this sticth yet. I will get myself a large knitting needle next time I go to Michaels. I think I need someone to SHOW me face to face how to work this stitch. I am going to a crochet club meeting in the next few weeks and hope to get someone to show me there. Thanks for the replies!

My husband's aunt has an afghan using that stitch. I have always liked it even before I knew how to crochet. :)

My grandmother, who was born in 1898, learned to do broomstick lace from HER grandmother -- and she actually used the handle of her household broom to do it on. My mom still has a couple of broomstick lace afghans she made :) She taught all of us to do it although I haven't done it in years; it really isn't hard, just a little awkward at first til you get used to it, and it works up really fast.
