His birthday is in a few months and I'd like to make him an afghan. He's very successful, live in the city and he's a bachelor.

Do you know of any patterns that would make a nice present for him?

Thank you.

This Autumn Afternoon afghan is one of the nicest afghans I have seen for men.

Men are soooo difficult. Anyways I looked at patterns on the Lion Brand site... I think there are several that may work for a man. I think they are scared away by open stitches and girly colors... Somebody once told me that a guy would have to be drugged to wear a shirt with more than three colors in it. :think Don't know how true that is, but with all of the great colors out there I am sure that you can find some great "manly" colors to work with. Here are a few links of patterns I liked and would do for a man in my life.
http://www.lionbrand.com/patterns/chs-bafg.html a simple basket weave throw
http://www.lionbrand.com/patterns/chs-bafg.html a diagnonal striped throw in two colors

Hope that helps...

What do you think of this one:http://hometown.aol.com/crochetalong/aranghan.html
or this one (from Original patterns:

http://www.therockingchair.us/squareeleganceafghan.html

(I am working on this currently, and it is turning out nice and "manly"

When my husband and I were dating in college, I made him a Basketweave blanket. If you'd like, I'll take a picture of it and link it so you can see it. It was made by chaining a multiple of 6, plus two chains to turn.

Row 1: sk 3 ch, *1 dc in next ch*, ch 2, turn.
Row 2&3: sk 1 dc, *(1 post dc around front) 3xs, (1 post dc around back) 3xs*, (1 post dc-front) 3xs, 1dc in top of turning chain, ch2, turn.
Row 4&5: sk 1 dc, *(1 post dc-back) 3xs, (1 post dc-front) 3xs*, (1 post dc-back) 3xs, 1 dc in top of turn ch, ch 2, turn.

Repeat pattern from Row 2.
3xs= 3 times

If you use more the one color, say rows 3&4 different from main color...it kind of gives a plaid effect...the weave stands out better. This textured pattern stitch can be found in the Reader's Digest: Complete Guide to Needlework Pg.373 (in my old edition)

Sorry if this was too much explanation...PM me if you wanna picture of it.
Best of luck!

I made one for my husband that is on Vera Hannafords site and was also in Crochet me http://www.crochetme.com/issue_1/easy_patterned_throw.html

It worked out nicely--the coors aren't too bold-it's manly-has textural interest-super easy.

If not that you could always go with a striped blanketof hdc with his favorite team colors or hold two colors together throughout--maybe a khaki and a khaki green?

Men are soooo difficult.

Not really. You just have to know them and what they like. ;)

I'd have to be drugged, too. :lol

I agree the Autumn Afternoon and the aran ones are nice.
So is this one by Julie: http://withahook.com/gallery/Afghans/gabull

It's just a ripple but it's done in college colors. I think my husband would like it in those exact colors.
I did this pillow for him for his birthday this year and he wants a matching afghan: http://home.comcast.net/~crochet_cindy/patterns/pillows/georgia.gif

I think you can make lots of afghans (even granny squares) work if you just pick manly colors, or know and use your friend's favorite colors.

Oh another thing if you hold a black an any other dark color together, it looks like a nice manly tweedy thing. Again most any pattern works for that.
I made black and gray for my brother, just back and forth.
I made black and med/dark blue for my dad and one for my son.

A lot of the southwestren or Navajo inspired designs are fairly manly too.

I totally agree!! Both my husband and son have requested afghans for this winter, and both were VERY plain to say they didnt' want anything "holey." (I'm half-way done with a log cabin pattern in sc for my husband, but haven't picked one out for my son yet). My husband said the same about a scarf I want to make him. Actually, my teenage daughter also requested an afghan "without holes." She said she doesn't like when her toes poke through :).

I've been thinking about this one:
