I've set a goal for myself of making 100 UBW hats by December 31. I've done 60 since last Saturday, so I've got a pretty good start. These will go to the homeless.

Dot...that is so nice of you and 100 hats - WOW! I also have stuff made for homeless and women's shelter, so thanks for the idea - if you don't mind, I may make a few using a bigger hook! Also, why is it called UBW hat? Dar

GREAT JOB>.. I am doing the same thing for my area.. Have started a charity drive called hats for homeless.. Have had some ppl donate yarn to help out and have a church ministry who wants to get involved as well. They travel once a yr to New York and do their work there for the homeless.

<blockquote><strong><em>Quote:</em></strong><hr>UBW = Ugly but Warm<hr></blockquote>
I call these hats UBW because I use whatever yarn I have on hand and don't really care what colors I pair together, so I get some really ugly hats sometimes, but they're warm.

As far as sleep goes, funny you mentioned it. I have had a really bad case of insomnia this past week and so I only sleep an hour at a time.

This is my interpretation of a basic hat pattern using 2 strands of yarn and a large (M) hook. I love this one because it works up so fast, about 30 minutes a hat, depending on who's bugging me at the time.

Put your on spin on it and have fun.

One hundred hats? That is incredible. I can't imagine doing it, but of course that's because I have never made a hat. Rest assured though, Dot, that if I ever make one, it will be with one of your patterns. :))

I do mittens and hats for a local charity. I do them all year long. When I have that leftover that you just don't know what to do with it, it either becomes a hat or mittens or both. Then I toss them in a box. This week, I'll go through that box, make sets, and donate the whole shebang. Some years there's more than others. This year there's quite a bit. But whenever I need "just a little something" to work on, that's what I make.

I admire you're determination, Dot, to do it all at once.

Thanks for the offer, Dot. Right now I only have some Caron blue yarn and I'm not sure if I want to make a hat out of it. I haven't looked at your patterns in detail lately, but the one that stands out in my mind is the Lizzy Hat with the flower stitch in it. :)

Hi Barbara, I'll try to put up more pictues, maybe tomorrow. I've done 72 hats now, so it looks like I might meet my goal. <img border=0 src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/rdhappy2Santa.gif" />

Those hats will mean alot to the people who wear them not just because they keep them warm but also because someone made them.

OK, Barbara, here's 4 more UBW hats. They're all done with 2 colors, one dark and one light or ombre. They are turning out cuter than I expected them to be. <img border=0 src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v144/bythehook7647/4UBWhats.jpg" /> <img border=0 src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/rdhappy2Santa.gif" />

THANKS! Dot :)h Those really don't look ugly...but they do look warm. I'm sure whoever gets them will appreciate
them.:)

I've made 2 since you posted about them. At least you used the same 2 colors throughout the hat. I used up some scraps and have several shades of blue and grey in the first hat I did. But it will keep someone warm!

They work up fast, don't they? Doing it your way is why they're called UBW hats. I meant to use scraps but instead decided to clear out all the dull colors in my stash. I need a good excuse to purchase more yarn. I also have several boxes of UFO's someone donated to me and I plan to frog them and make UBW hats.
