I think the pattern is less important than the colors. Darker colors seem more masculine.
I am making a scarf for a young man, this version is knitted, but I think you could do a mitered pattern with crochet easily. Decrease on either side of a central stitch.

You would chain twice the length of your desired width, then decrease on either side of it.

It is the last scarf in this post.

What I posted in the other thread:
"This past Christmas I made two, one for my husband and one for my nephew.
For my nephew I used purple and yellow, his favorite basketball and football team colors. I just double crocheted back and forth. Kind of boring yes but he loved it and it was totally not girly.
For my husband I used red and black and went length wise in the back stitch only. Turned out very masculine. You could try something like that and use some of the 'suede' yarn; either for all or mixed in. That might look good."

I did this for my brother in law last Christmas. I did a half double crochet stitch and I think it was 25 stitch rows. He loves it.

I've made scarves for several guys:

my ex-boyfriend - who wanted one to go to his knees - that one was just double crochet and it took *forever*. (he was my boyfriend at the time, and no, we didn't break up over the scarf ;) - he asked for it and picked out the yarn for it himself)
There's a (small) picture of it on his website here:

my ex-boyfriend's roommate - similar type to the other one but shorter. :) I'd found some really soft yarn for it and it was just acrylic of some sort. Wish I could find that again!

my fiance - This one was out of the fuzzy Red Heart Yarn in double crochet. It's really warm!

my old advisor - out of Homespun in double crochet.

And my fiance made a scarf for his advisor out of Chenille Thick and Quick in a bluish green. I think it was either just single or just double crochet. (he's just beginning)

Mine were all made back when I *only* knew single and double crochet and rectangular items were all I knew how to do. :)
