View Full Version : Beginner Baby Set

This is a hat, socks, & shorts. I made an effort to keep everything as simple as possible, so nothing is too fancy, but I wanted something easy & fast. Please let me know if you have any problems with the patterns.

Hat
4.5mm hook (labled G by Crystal brand)
sport weight yarn--shown project used Red Heart Baby Soft
stitch marker
yarn needle to weave in ends
Gauge: 6 rows of 8 hdc = 2 inches
Finished hat is size for a newborn, & stretches to 14", but when making baby stuff remember it's better to err on the large side.
Note: Hat is worked in a continuous spiral, without a joining slst. It is also worked from the bottom up.
Stitch note: HDC decl. is worked as followed: bring up a loop in each of next 2 sts; YO & draw hook through all 3lps, just like an HDC. (You can also use whatever your normal HDC decl. is if you do it differently, & yes I know this is essentially the same as an SC decl. in most patterns, but it makes a st the proper height that actually looks like an HDC.)
Ch 54. Join with sl st to create ring, being careful not to let it twist.
1) Hdc in first ch & in each additional ch. Place marker in final st (you'll move this up as you go along.) 54 HDC Note: If you find it easier, for this round alone, replace the first HDC with a ch-2; you won't be able to see a difference in the finished project.
2 - 7)HDC in each st around. 54 HDC
8) *HDC in each of 7 sts; HDC decl. over next 2 sts * around. 48 HDC
9) HDC in each st. 48 HDC
10) *HDC in each of 6 sts; HDC decl. over next 2 sts* around. 42 HDC
11) HDC in each st. 42 HDC
12) *HDC in each of 5 sts; HDC decl. over next 2 sts* around. 36 HDC
13) *HDC in each of 4 sts; HDC decl. over next 2 sts* around. 30 HDC
14) *HDC in each of 3 sts; HDC decl. over next 2 sts* around. 24 HDC
15) *HDC in each of 2 sts; HDC decl. over next 2 sts* around. 18 HDC
16) *HDC in one st; HDC decl. over next 2 sts* around. 12 HDC
17) HDC in each st. 12 HDC
18) HDC decl. over 2 sts around. 6HDC
19 - 22) HDC in each st around. 6 HDC
To finish: Draw up a loop in each st. YO & draw hook through all loops. Finish off.
Weave in ends.

Sockies
4mm hook
sport weight yarn
stitch marker
yarn needle to weave in ends
gauge: 7 rows of 8 HDC = 2"
First 14 rows (from toe to heel) measure 3.5", approx. newborn size.
Same notes as above apply here: no joining st, & HDC decl. is the same.
Note: At beginning of rows 12 - 14, replace first HDC with ch-2, turn.
Ch2
1) Work 8 HDC in second ch. 8 HDC.
2) *HDC twice in 1 st; HDC once in next st* around. 12 HDC
3) *HDC once in each of 2 sts; HDC twice in next st* around. 16 HDC
4 - 10) HDC in each st around. 16 HDC
11) HDC in first 8 sts ONLY 8 HDC
12 - 14) HDC in each st. 8 HDC
15) Ch 1. HDC in side of row 14. HDC in sides of rows 13 - 11. HDC in each unworked st on round 10, HDC back up sides of rows 11 - 14 & in each st on row 16. 24 HDC (Be sure to move your marker to the new "last" st.)
16) HDC decl. twice. HDC in next 9 sts. HDC decl. twice. HDC in remaining sts. 20 HDC
17) HDC decl. twice. HDC in next 7 sts. HDC decl. twice. HDC in remaining sts. 16 HDC
18 - 21) HDC in each st. around. 16 HDC
22) *HDC once in each of 3 sts. HDC twice in next st* around. 20 HDC
23 - 25) HDC in each st around.
26) Note that you will go around round 25 twice, but since no height is gained, I label it here as 1 round. Sc twice in BLO (back loop only) of each st around. SC twice in FLO of each st around. Finish off & weave in ends.
One more coming in next post...

Shorts
4.25 mm hook
sport weight yarn
st marker
yarn needle to weave in ends
Gauge: 7 rows of 8 HDC = 2"
Finished project should have a 16 inch waist before drawstring is added.
Note: Same rules apply here too--when working in rounds, don't use a joining st, & HDC decl. is the same. Also note: Instead of the usual ch-2 counting as the first HDC, I chained one to turn, then HDC in that first st. You don't have to do this, you can do it the classical way, but I'm leaving off directions for the first st because of it.
Front & Back: Make 2.
Ch 33
1) HDC in 3rd ch from hook (first 2 chs count as 1 HDC) & in each additional ch. 32 HDC
2 - 17) HDC in each st. 32 HDC
At end of row 17, finish off.
18) Join yarn in st 13 with a sl st. Ch 2 (counts as 1 HDC). HDC in next 8 sts, leaving remaining sts unworked. 8HDC
19 - 21) HDC in each st. 8 HDC
With right sides together, sew crotch & side seams.
Legs: Work the same on each side.
1) Join yarn to first st. on front piece. Place 44 HDC evenly around the leghole. 44 HDC
2) *HDC in 9 sts; HDCdecl. over next 2 sts* around. 40 HDC
3) HDC in each st around. 40 HDC
4) *HDC in 8 sts; HDC decl. over next 2 sts* around. 36 HDC
5) HDC in each sts around. 36 HDC
6) *HDC in 7 sts; HDC decl. over next 2 sts* around. 32 HDC
7) HDC in each st around. 32 HDC
8) SC in each st around. Finish off.
Waistband:
Join to free loop of beginning ch. SC in same place. *Ch 1, sk 1 free loop; sc in next free loop* around. Sl st to first SC, finish off.
Weave in all ends.
Drawstring: Ch 128. Finish off. After turning shorts right side out, weave drawstring through ch-1 spaces on waistband.
