Here's what I do:
G Hook and worsted weight yarn (I usually use lion brand wool-ease)
Chain 2.
Row 1: 6 sc in second chain from hook. (6 sc)
Row 2: 2 sc in each sc from Row 1 (12 sc, working in a spiral)
Row 3: sc in first 5 sc of Row 2, two sc in sixth sc, sc in next five sc, two sc in last sc (14 sc)
Row 4-7: sc in each sc of Row 3 (14 sc)
Row 8: sc in first 5 sc of Row 2, sc next two sc tog (decrease) in sixth and seventh sc, sc in next five sc, sc next two sc tog (decrease) in 13th and 14th sc (12 sc)
Row 9-11: sc in each sc of Row 8 around (12 sc)
Row 12: sc in first 5 sc of Row 11. On sixth sc, before making the stitch, chain 12 (making the arms) and crochet sc in second chain from hook back. When you get back to the sixth sc of the row, make your sc and continue. Repeat on the 12th sc of the row for the other arm.
Row 13-15: sc in each sc around (12 sc)
Optional Tail, Row 16: follow instructions for row 12 arms, but chain out 15 on the ninth sc of the row and make only one.
Row 16(17)-22: sc in each sc around (12 sc). At end of Row 22, join with a sl st to the first st and end off.
Stuff head with polyfil and tie a piece of yarn to make a neck (see pictures). Embroider details of face and add hair as desired.
