Here's a question... a lady I recently made a poncho for saw a thread crocheted dress pattern someplace, she asked me if she bought the pattern and materials, could she pay me to make the dress? Would this fall into a copyright violation? It seems to me, if she purchases the pattern herself she should be able to pay someone to make the item for her if she can't make it herself.... but I didn't want to answer her question without looking into it first. Any thoughts on this?

If she's paid for the pattern I can't see how it would violate anything for her to pay someone to make it for her.:)

If she paid for the pattern & is giving it to you to make her something with it, then no, it doesn't violate copyright laws. It's for her own personal use even tho she is paying you to make it for her instead of making it herself. That is my understanding of copyright laws. She's not selling it or publishing the pattern.

I agree that if she buys the pattern and keeps it after the dress is done, you're just providing a crocheting "service" as opposed to selling her a finished garment which would be a copyright violation without the permission of the author/designer.

I agree. It's being used for personal use. She's just paying you to make it. That's fine.
