help with gauge if you please:)

my question is this: how can i substitute a bulky weight yarn (homespun) for a worsted weight (tlc essentials)? i have a pattern that i love and want to use the homespun instead. i dont know how to make it the proper size while using a different yarn and hook size than the pattern calls for. please help:D thanks!

its a toddler coat, in the candi jensen candy tots book.

i use the size hook thats right for the yarn i use. thicker yarn uses bigger hook. :hook half the time i never know what i am supposed to use because they usually american patterns and yarn. :)
