I have been crocheting for over 10 years. I have never been unable to follow a pattern. Some patterns I had to read several times before I understood what it meant but I am just stumped. This pattern says ch3, using dc-foundation ch ,make 37dc. I have tried everything and nothing is working. I have searched the net and cant find anyhting about dc foundation ch. How can you make a dc without a chain or stich to insert that hook in ?? :think Someone please help.

I haven't actually used this yet, but what comes to mind is that it sounds like the double base chain described here: http://www.weirdmirror.org/instruction/dblbsch.htm

Hope that helps some! :U

Sounds to me as if the beg ch-3 (which also counts as a dc in some patterns) is your dc-foundation ch. Therefore you would make 37 dc into the 3rd ch from your hook (or into the base of your dc-foundation ch). That's how I would interpret the instructions to mean.

The info posted by Stacey is great.:cheer I knew I had seen it posted here before but could not remember where.
:cheer It is really easy to do if you just follow the pictures and at the end, you have a very nice, elastic edge.
I thought:think I knew everything there was to know about crochet so I was thrilled to learn something new.
Never too old to learn something new.:grandma
Have fun.

Although I agree that the Double Base Chain is great, I don't think that's what Jen is telling us the pattern calls for.
This pattern says ch3, using dc-foundation ch ,make 37dc.
It states to make 37dc into the ch-3 (dc-foundation chain). Jen, is this the pattern you are using? Cotton Candy Shrug? (http://www.crochetville.org/forum/archive/index.php/t-7860.html) If so, you could get Pfirsch to explain what she means.

Here's a link to the stitch required: No Chain Double Crochet (http://serendipity.gpvm.com/no_chain.html#n_ch_dc) It's a link that goes with this pattern Cotton Candy Shrug (http://gramma.tiker.net/cotton_candy_shrug)

Actually, it looks like the link you sent for the "no-chain stitch" describes the same technique as the one on Josie's site. I believe that the pattern has you build a dc foundation chain of 37 stitches. 37 stitches into one chain is quite a bit, you know? Things would get rather heavily bunched up!

This is an entirely new technique for me, I'm going to have to pull out some yarn when I get a chance and practice it...:hook

THANKS EVERYONE, I APPRECIATE ALL THE HELP. IT WAS VERY DIFFERENT TO START A PROJECT WITH THAT STICH INSTEAD OF JUST A NORMAL CHAIN. i GUESS YOU REALLY DO LEARN SOMETHING NEW EVERYDAY. LOL!!

I JUST learned this yesterday - LOL... after HOW &%$#& long crocheting?

Sheesh!

I got the SC foundation from Dot's site (bythehook) and then played with it half the afternoon in sc, hdc, and dc. OMG!! :clap I can't believe how much easier this is than actual chaining - and THEN hunting for loops - and STILL getting a sloppy start and STILL having to go back and crochet "upside down" to clean it up for a finished project. And forget crocheting into the "nub" in the back of each chain... I just can't do it in the this century. If the foundation row takes longer then the actual project, forget it.
Oh, man, it makes such a neat start (and finish) to the foundation row. Play with it and master it - you will NEVER go back to the old standard. It's worth the effort.

:think You may find that the Double Crochet referred to is actually your SC.
:think I tried doing a Treble (Your DC) in this way and it did not look too good but when you do DC (Your SC) it works beautifully.
:think Make sense???
