Using either the television show or the books as inspiration, we can join together and crochet anything our imagination suggests is related to the stories. The idea for this crochet-along started with this post (http://www.crochetville.org/forum/showthread.php?t=12808) where many good ideas were shared.
A couple ideas of crochet items to make:
1- Caroline Ingall's Red Shawl
(this is a half granny square type shawl & some possible patterns are:)
Half Granny Square instructions (http://www.geocities.com/riverglorious/Patterns/halfgrannysquare.html)

2- Laura Ingalls Wilder Doily (http://www.papercraftsmag.com/projects/project.ihtml?content_id=411&cat_idx=6)
There are unlimited possibilities for things to crochet if you want to imagine another project. Please feel free to share your ideas and make anything that reminds you of Little House on the Prairie!

I LOVE Little House on the prarie!! They had a 72-hour Michael Landon marathon on cable yesterday (might still be on today), of course a lot of Little House shows! I could have watched them all. I would join this CAL!:yay Is there anything we could do as long as it was 'Little House'-ish? Or are there certain rules/ things we should make? A bonnet like Laura and Mary wore? :D
This is going to be fun. :clap Thank you for all the links!!
Does anyone know how to make a 'Little House CAL' button? (I would if I knew how, but I don't...:blush )

By Pumamouse definition, a shawl is that smallish crocheted bikkie thingie that little old ladies of yesteryear used to drape around their shoulders to keep warm while they were sitting in their rocking chair and sipping tea before the fire.
AAACK!! This is me!! Except that I'm not all that old (33), and I don't have a rocking chair (a big blue chair from IKEA), I always have a cup/pot of tea going :tea , and I don't actually have a fire (I try to visit people with woodstoves but I do have a DVD of the holiday yule log). Well I gues as soon as I'm done this blanket I'm trying to knit I might just have to make myself a Pumamouse. Wow!!
I guess I won't be doing all that housework I had planned on doing this week - LOL :wash

This is great! I LOVE :manyheart the doily that Laura Ingalls Wilder made. I will have to try my hand at it (although just reading through the instructions began to confuse me -- what is a trtr?) I have also been thinking about making a shawl since I read the other thread about Caroline Ingall's shawl. I don't think I'll make a red one though. This should be fun! :hook

Little House on the Prairie is one of my favorite shows. I have 3 seasons on dvd. Every now and again I will catch them in reruns. I would love to do a LHOTP crochet along. Now I just have to figure out what project to do.

Oh this is fascinating ... I wish I had time right now; I'll keep an eye on this and if it's still running after the holidays, I'm in! Too many bazillion projects going in the immediate future, unfortunatley. :(
Interesting (for me :lol) side note - my mother was a HUGE LIW fan - when we went on trips, we visited many of the Ingalls homestead spots. It was fascinating. I still have a costume she made me in second grade, and my little stuffed black susan is in my trunk.

Faith, OMG, I had such a similar experience! I loved the books and read them so much when I was growing up that when I was 9(?) my family went on a big ol' summer road trip to almost all the places that Laura and her family lived. It was one of the best vacations we ever took. I loved it. How fun that your family did the same!

Hi there. A crochet-along means that anyone who wants can work on the same or similar project. In this case, I thought it would be more fun if we made it an open invitation to make anything "inspired by" the Little House books or television show. Some are going to join this crochet-along later on when they have time to make a new crochet project. I personally just dumped my current project to make a shawl. I'm very impulsive!
Feel free to join anytime!

I decided to make a Caroline Ingall's shawl (inspired by the red shawl worn by her character in the television show). I'm basing it on the Pumamouse sleuthing shawl (http://pumamouse.com/crochetshawl.html). I decided to use up some ecru yarn I have. I plan to give this shawl to my grandmother. I love this pattern because it's so easy I can actually watch t.v. while making it (gonna watch Little House today), plus it's working up so fast! I'll be done in a couple days, I think!
I still intend to try to capture some images of the shawl but have to figure out what I was doing wrong.
If anyone wants to make a button, feel free to volunteer. I can make a simple Web page in a few days.

Well, I think I have to join in this CAL. :hook I love making shawls.... I just have to finish one of my current projects before I can start this one. I think I will have to do the Pumamouse one. Of course, with what i've got going , it will be a few months before I can start on it..:(

Tried to get a start on the shawl last night as I have the perfect color for winter weather. I am using the Pumamouse sleuthing shawl. How ever the pattern is not written clearly and I am having an issue getting started. Anyone else find a pattern simular that is easier to read?

NUTS for ... the waltons.
ROFL-- Marietta, don't get me started on the Waltons! I am crazy for that show too, and there is lots of crochet in it also-- Grandma, Mamma, Mary Ellen..
Okay, LHOTP is the topic I know, but I had to mention my love for John Boy and the gang too.

I am in on this one :)
I teach Special Ed, and last year for our December/Christmas theme, we did LHOTP. We read about the Christmas at Plum Creek, then we watched the episode. Later we were acting out the scene, giving out homemade gifts to each other. I gave every student a pair of red mittens-- crocheted of course-- (I only had 12 kids).
The best part was when a good friend of mine who loves to act came blustering in during our Christmas reenactment, bearded, in his long johns, shivering and covered with snow (fake, since we live in Southern California) and preformed a full-on Mr. Edwards! He retold the story of meeting the "Bearded Fella" and then passed our "peppermint sticks" to all the kids. They just loved it! It was one of my favorite christmas memories!

Hi Marietta,
I'm currently 3/4 done with that shawl. Maybe I can help you get started on it by explaining anything that's confusing you. The pattern tells you to start by making a starting chain, then work into the chain furthest away from the hook (next to the knot from the slip stitch you started the chain with). But you have to turn the chain. I'm not sure why you have to turn the chain, but if you do or don't, it probably won't matter. Just ask about anything you are confused about. We can help!

I think it's so neat that you two are using or have used LHOTP in your curriculum. I love this idea! If I ever homeschool, we are going to study these books and learn about pioneer life, etc.

I finished my first Caroline Ingall's shawl. If I get some help from my husband one day this week, I'll try to figure out my problems with capturing images from the DVD's as well as get a digital picture of the shawl I made. It's not the one I want to make for myself. It's just a creme colored half granny shawl that I made to use up yarn (and possibly give to my grandma). But it was a good experiment in using the pumamouse sleuthing shawl pattern. It really does look like the Caroline Ingalls' shawl I spotted in the first season of LHOTP. Next time I make it, I will make it in red yarn, probably something soft, perhaps bulky.
I want to try something else from the show. I might make an ear-muff kind of thing that Laura wore in a Christmas episode from the first season (where she sells her horse, Bunny, to buy Ma a stove).

The ironies continue. I love this thread. I love LHOTP.
I watched the episode you mention and loved the winter bonnet of Laura's. I started a thread on it, and another member posted the photo of it, although it is not a very clear shot.
Anyway, it is on Prairiehomemaker.com.

Unsure, which site the photo comes from, but I included a link to this site.
Hope we can make one with you.

Okay so I found the perfect shawl that I am going to make. I even had to pull out the dvd's to compare and make sure it was close to Caroline's shawl.
I found this awesome blood red yarn that I am going to use to make it.
Hope everyone is having fun with their project and can't wait to see some pictures.

Crocheting items from LH has been on my mind lately and then I stumble upon this thread. My kids and I love LH and my dd has asked me repeatedly to make her a shawl so, maybe I'll end up making matching shawls for the both of us. It doesn't hurt that red is my favorite color! I think I just found my new project.

I was just talking to my 13yo daughter about LH the other day. I told her it was my favorite set of books when I was around her age and that the show was great! I took a look at the Sleuthing Shawl pattern and printed it out and I'm going to start on it this week. This is so cool! What a great idea! :yay

Hey everyone! I'm glad to see more people getting interested in this CAL! I am in the process of moving, so I'm not able to get started on another LHoTP project right now. I gave my first Caroline Ingalls' shawl to my grandma and she loves it. That one was made in cream colored yarn and it looked very nice even though it was a simple stitch pattern. The next one I do, I'll be doing it in red. That one's for me! I want to wear it for Thanksgiving and Christmas so I might choose a cranberry shade of red.
Yarnmistress: Your blood red yarn sounds like it will look great. I'll look forward to hearing more about how your shawl turns out.
Mary-Amelia: What a neat coincidence. Great minds do think alike. I want to make Laura's winter bonnet/ear-muffler thing just because it's such an interesting crochet object. But I live in California and don't know anyone who could actually use one. I might make it and then send it to one of my on-line buddies who lives in Detroit and has a 7 year old daughter. His wife is pretty cool so she might like it. Not sure if the little girl will like it though. :D I think the only way to figure out how to make it is by studying the images of it in the DVD, then come up with a simple pattern. It's not going to be exact but it will at least be interesting to make it.

My eight year old daughter loves Laura and we live in the mountains, so if you do need someone to post it too, we would appreciate it.
I had a look at the shop at the green wool etc. but nothing in Laura's color.
The grey part seems to be in a pointy oval, not very descriptive I know. Not sure how to do that shape.

I finally picked up some yarn to make a shawl, lol! I am just going to do the half granny pattern, I like the way it is written out and the diagrams. I picked out LB Microspun in Lilac. I have reddish/blonde hair and thought that the red would be too much, that, I am not a big fan of red for myself to wear. :lol
I'd love to see anyone's finished products!! Do we post them here or in the 'show and tell' forum? Have a great Saturday all!! It's only 69 degrees outside today here in CT, finally beautiful weather to crochet!! :autumn

Right on!! I bet your shawl is pretty! Mine is slow going, as I get multiple interruptions (3 kids, lol), but getting there. I am almost done with the first skein, the pattern called for 14 oz. of yarn to make a shawl. I could have used it this morning, brrrr, it was chilly! I want to try to finish it by the weekend, it is only going to be in the upper 50's here! Did you fringe or just make a nice border? I like the 1/2 granny too, it's a nice and easy pattern.
Please share some pics! Do we post them here or in the other forum? Thanks!! :hook

I finished my sleuthing shawl! I used Homespun Quartz. It's really soft and comfy. The pictures don't show the colors very well, but it has lots of pinks and purples in it. It was also hard to take the picture because my cat kept laying on it and then biting me when I tried to get him off!

I have had this project just sitting in my to do pile and haven't relaly had a chance to get to it. Last night I caught an episode of LH (the one where charles is away and a young guy named chris comes to walknut grove and works for the ingall's building the new kitchen). I did finish my shawl as well, you can check it out in the clothing show and tell section under Half Granny Square Shawl. I didn't make it red, as red isn't really my color, lol! It was really fun to make, and I am almost done another one for a gift for my mom. Of course, it's a different yarn and color. Thank you so much for sharing the 1/2 granny square pattern, it's quickly become one of my favorites!
