This CAL officially starts today 10/17/05! I'm hoping to get started on it today (wouldn't you know it, I have a super busy day today!). I know a few of you started already, and I would love to see your progress and hear any feedback you have about the pattern!
And if any of you are interested here is a button:
http://www.psychobabbleblog.com/images/CAL.jpg
I was interested in tackling this project and thought it would be fun to do as a crochet-a-long.
I posted about it on my blog HERE (http://psychobabbleblog.com/index.php/weblog/upc/), and here's a link to the picture at Interweave Crochet - PICTURE (http://www.interweavecrochet.com/materials.asp#easygoing)
There are also some corrections up on their website. If anyone is interested, pop in to my blog and leave a comment to let me know.
The difficulty level is easy and I thought maybe we could start in a week or so.

You can order the mag from the link of the picture that Amy posted. Some really neat projects! I'm definitely going to order the mag, but don't think I'll have time to do the CAL - Unless, of course, we can do it after Christmas...

I'm interested too. Haven't gotten the mag yet, and I really need to start on my Christmas projects, but I want to make myself at least one sweater this season! I'm going to go hunt for some possible subs for the yarn, too, so it doesn't break the bank. :)

I bought the interweave magazine this weekend, way up here in Canada. It would be fun to make something from it as a CAL!! I'll keep a watch for it too :hook

I got my magazine.
I won't be able to fork out for the Rowan yarn, so am looking for something cheaper that will work.
I'm fairly new to crocheting, but am ready to do something challenging - it says "easy", we'll see :hook

I agree that this would be a great CAL and be great fun, BUT it may work better after Christmas. I know that I have many many gifts to make from now to then and may be able to squeeze in a small project, but this looks BIG.....After Xmas then????:clap

I got the magazine last night at my local WalMart. The hoodie looks like a great project. I'll have to find a yarn I want to do it in and may have to make some size adjustments. After Christmas would be a great time, let me know!

Silly question, but I have this magazine and thought the hoodie looked like something I wanted to make, but then I saw that it had a **graph** Oh my gosh, I don't know how to crochet off of one of those! In looking at the pattern, it looks like it does write the band pattern out, is that true?
The other sad thing, is there is no way that it will fit me now or any time soon this winter.... I am a little big out front right now.... Maybe after January it would.

I hadn't ever seen the magazine before you linked to it. So of course, I had to go out and get a copy of it. Thank you for talking about it. I want to join the CAL. But, I've got to get though my other projects first.... I'v already got yarn sitting around for three projects that havn't been started yet, not counting the 6 or so I'm doing right now....I have to many projects that are on my "want to do" list.... Maybe, I can do this after Xmass like some of the others are talking about.
But, thank you so much for talking about the magazine. If it hadn't been for your post, I never would have picked one up. Thanks.

I went ahead and bought some yarn (Bernat DeniumStyle) we'll see how that works for this.
I'm finishing up a poncho for my daughter, and then I'm considering starting this project.
I'm really hoping that we don't wait until after xmas for this (looks like it would be great to use for the fall - well ok for the spring also)
BUT - I do understand how projects can pile up and tis the season for gifts. - say...maybe I'll make a couple (if they if it goes ok) for gifts. :think

I would probably be interested, too. I have never done a CAL and might be a bit slower than everybody else (I am pretty new to crocheting.). But it does say it is easy... :scrachin and by the time you start, maybe I'll be much faster (she said, slightly wistfully)! Anywho, put me down as a possible?

I probably won't get to make the Hoodie until after Christmas. Too many projects to finish up before then and my arm has been acting up again as well. ( tendinitis) I can crochet a few rows then it starts getting sore and I have to stop. I have to wear my brace and do my exercises and just wait til it gets better. I guess I have been overdoing things.

I've decide as mid-October as the start date, but of course, feel free to jump in anytime after that. I wanted to use this for the fall, so I wanted to get moving on it.
I, of course, decided to make mine more complicated, so I picked up three different colors of Cascade 220 wool yarn in a pretty fall palette.
I made a button (it's up on my site) and I'm hoping I will be ready when it comes time to start.

I am definitely in this one. :) I was gifted the yarn by my mom after I found what I wanted to use on sale at Herrschner's. I'm about halfway through the back panel and am loving the pattern! My mother-in-law is coming into town later this week so I jumped on starting it while I had a bit of free time.
I'm using TLC Cotton Plus in Moss, which is a great "mossy" green color.

I saw that on your site, it's coming along great, and that is a beautiful color. I think I'll be starting next week. Can't wait to see how yours turns out! You can give us all pointers.
Oh, make sure you check out the Interweave Knit site, because there were some corrections to the pattern.

Wow, it's really looking good and you say it's easy? may I ask what size you are making it in, I'm always afraid to make a sweater and then not have it fit my hips when closed.........all that work for someone else..........I don't think so!!

I think I'm making it in XL. I measured my bust circumference and 49" would put it about as loose as the one on the girl in the photo. I could fit two fingers between my bust and the measuring tape which would give me room to wear it over something heavier than a t-shirt.
The back panel is coming along nicely so far, but I may change my mind once I get to some of the front panels. :P I love the "granite stitch" pattern you use throughout most of the hoodie. It's basically two half double crochets together.
Here's a pic of my progress so far -
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v154/tiffcrochets/Blog/easyhoodieback1.jpg
The insert band makes the waist so it's smaller than the rest of the pattern. I guess I've got about 10" of the 27" back panel and it took me about three hours, maybe more.

Thanks Tiffany, I would make an XL as well and I like the idea that the waist gets a bit of a cinch to it, I need room for my hips and because I'm high waisted I would probably make the part from the waist to the shoulder shorter than from the waist to the bottom. I love the color you chose and you're right about the texture of the stitch, a real beauty, can't wait to see the finished hoodie :hook

Hey there
I've also started the Hoodie, as of yesterday. I'm attempting the XL using Bernat denimstyle (white/off white color) - if this turns out ok, then I might attempt another with a different yarn. This was fairly cheap, so we'll see how it works. The feel isn't quite what I was wanting, but it might still work.
I'll post pictures as soon as I make some more progress.... I'm still working on the initial back and having gotten to the insert band yet, so it's kinda plain looking yet. The granite stich is really easy...woohooo!!
This might just be an easy pattern after all :clap
Looking good Tiffany!!! I do like that Moss color, I might have to try that yarn.

Alrighty,
I messed up somewhere and I'm improvising. After the insert pattern my work really started to fan out, soooo I turned it around and continued from the supposed bottom. Oh well, if I can get through this once and actually make something I can wear - I'll try try again. Also I'm making the biggist number on the pattern...maybe that's larger than an xl?..hehe Tis ok.
Here's what I have so far (not the best picture) ~~ too lazy to try to figure out what went wrong ~~

I noticed when I was working on the insert pattern that I really had to count my stitches every round. I always felt like I was getting a few extra stitches in. It looks like you ended up with too many stitches toward the end of the insert pattern which would make the granite stitch increase in stitches also, making it fan out. You should have the same numbers of v-stitch pairs in the bottom band of the granite stitch as the top.

Did you check the Interweave Site (http://www.interweavecrochet.com/corrections.asp#easygoing)? There is a correction published there, and I believe it's for the band (insert pattern).

ya I followed the correction, and I will admit I didn't carefully count the stiches, but some how I did indeed end up with way more.
I'm working on the front pannels now... Not sweating the back, I think I can fudge it and learn from my mistakes for my next one (going to try to make a small for my daughter....next) if I'm motivated. I just bought a ton of homespun on sale and am going to make some afgahns for Christmas presents.
Thanks :hook

I'm using Cascade 220 in three different colors (couldn't tell you what they are though - one is rusty reddish, another is pine greenish, and another has a teal-blue sort of tone to it, but dark). Each have little flecks of color in it. It means I'll have to hand wash the thing and I'm wondering if it's going to look like crud with the different colors, but we'll see. I'm hoping it's not something I'll want to frog after it's done. I'm trying my hardest to finish a poncho tonight so I can start this tomorrow.
Speaking of using three different colors, do you think I should do wide bands of color, or sort of random width stripes with the colors? I'm not quite sure how I'm going to approach this.

Ok, so time to copy the pattern out from the magazine, so I don't destroy it. lol
As well as determine what kind of yarn I am going to use for this...not to mention what color!?!?!? Hmmmm. Knowing me, most likely BLACK! It's so useful and goes with just about everything! :-D Though then again maybe a color that goes well for autumn and spring...hmmmmm any thoughts?

Wow that is a lot of colors goin on there....
Well I wimped out (as you saw in my earlier pic) and used a whiteish color.
It will certainly be interesting to see - I'm thinking the random width stripes might be pleasing to the eye.
I've done a few more pieces (fronts and working on the sleeves now) I certainly needed the "head start" as I seem to not have much time to crochet and am kinda slow anyway.
I think I'm about to be confused on the construction of the pieces, but I'll deal with that in a bit. (as this is my first real clothing item to wear)
Crochet on!!! Can't wait to see everyone's progress :clap

I'm such a great coordinator, I started this CAL thread and I can't even start it this week. Maybe while I'm watching the first game of the World Series.

Well since I got the magazine sent over from the US so I could make this hoody I'm actually going to start it :)- I've been looking for a big project to do inbetween my smaller christmas gifts- I always end up not being able to decide what to do next so a big project will be helpful to pass the time whilst I'm deciding :) I actually started my own version of the colourwaves topper in the same issue last night as my 'big' project and finished it this afternoon :lol
Will go raid my yarn stash and see if I have anything I like to get started with, not sure how long its going to take my to get it finished though- there isn't a time limit of this CAL is there??:lol

WOW- I didn't even go as far as pricing it, I knew it was going to be WaaaaaY to much for me - especially for a first time "assembly project".
I've gotten quite a few pieces done and am working on my second (and last ;) ) sleeve. I hope to (cross my fingers) get it done and constructed this weekend...we'll see. I really need to study how I'm going to do that.
I can't wait. The yarn I'm using( Bernat denum style) has ended up feeling better since I first began, so hopefully it will feel comfy.
Jpr54_ : all I did was find something that was near the same weight yarn and is used in making the same type clothing pieces.... I think it's going to work out fine for me. Not sure if that helps or not, but maybe.

Ok, so I started this tonight while watching the World Series (GO SOX!). I got past the insert band on the back and a few more rows of the granite stitch. Complicating and slowing things down are the fact that I chose 3 colors to work with. Looking at the assembly, I have NO idea how the end product will look, considering that I'm going to have stripes running both vertically and horizontally. I'm hoping it looks somewhat eccentric without looking totally crappy. We'll see I guess. I suppose I could always do it in one color, but I made so much progress, I think I'll just keep plugging along and see what happens. I'll be posting pictures on Monday.

Ok here is my progress so far (I made it just past the insert band part on the back). It seems to be working up fairly quick. Quicker now that I'm more comfortable with the hdc.
http://www.psychobabbleblog.com/images/hoodie1.jpg
I'm going to have to modify the pattern a little bit though to allow for my stripes. :think Specifically the side pieces and possibly the hood pieces. However it would just be a change of working them horizontally instead of vertically.

Amy that is really pretty! I think I might have to try to make this one. It looks beyond my skill level, but I'm going to try. The worst that can happen is that I will have to rip it out, right? Keep posting photos, it motivates me.

It is SO not above your skill level. It is marked as "Easy" in Interweave Crochet. Although it did take me a few times reading through it to feel like I had a handle on how everything will come together (still don't know about the hood, I guess I'll cross that bridge when I come to it).
As long as you try it in only one color. I got a little adventurous and I'm hoping it doesn't have disastrous results!

Thanks for the words of encouragement, Amy. I will definitely only be using one color! I ordered some yarn and as soon as it gets here I will get started.

I give you lots of credit because I would drive myself insane trying to decide where to place each color.
I'm kinda letting the pattern tell me where to switch. I have three colors and I figured if every other row is bigger, then the colors should "rotate" through the pattern fairly evenly. I figured I shouldn't sweat it too much. If I do, I'll wind up giving up on it, so it's sort of like a discovery to me.
Mel
October 24, 2005, 05:09 PM
Amy- I love the colours you have picked and the way you've switched the colours is great. Will be very interested to see how you put the front together- looks like it may be a challenge, but with the colours you've chosen I'm sure it will be worth it :)
kippian- the pattern is pretty simple to follow so I'm sure you'll do fine :) I think it's already been mentioned before but it helps to make sure you count your stitches when working on the insert panel- I'd got all the way up to row 15 on the insert band last night and realised I'd missed a stitch or two right at the beginning.
Mel
October 24, 2005, 05:15 PM
I've 'treated' myself this weekend to some time to work on this big project (despite having 2 shrugs to make- one for my mum and one for her friend, not to mention all the birthday/xmas stuff I have on my to do list).
I've done just past the insert band and despite not counting my stitches on the insert band the first time- cos it 'looked right' :lol I've been really enjoying this pattern. I really don't want to put it down but I have other things I really need to work on to.
I've adjusted the pattern slightly to make it an inch or two bigger around the hips (I hate that cling). Am also considering changing the front so that it completely opens- but will think more about that when I get the back done.

It's looking great Mel! I only had to count when finishing the insert band (the 2nd square mesh part), since I somehow added a stitch or two. Now I'm just into the hdc back.
I was thinking about making it open in front too, but I have enough alterations to make on this pattern, I think I'd better keep it as is.

Also, an update. I have all the pieces made except the sleeves. I'll start assembling the body tomorrow. However, I have my doubts about whether it will fit properly or not. I'm tall and I have a feeling it's not going to hit as low as I would like.

I'm itching to get started on the rest of the pieces. I love doing the back panel first because it seems like it will have taken the longest to finish.
I'm going to my family reunion this weekend so I can't wait to work on it during the drive and while visiting. :)

I'm frustrated right now. I just have the sleeves to finish but I know that it will be too small on me. My gauge is spot on so it's not that, I think I chose a size a smidge too small on me. Don't get me wrong, I'll be able to get it on, but it's gonna be snug unless I lose some weight. The curses of being tall and somewhat overweight, I should have just gone for the biggest size and be done with it. Maybe my cousin might like it. I don't know. I guess I didn't look close enough because I did the size on the model thinking it would fit. Obviously I wasn't thinking.
Here's the thing, doing a test fit it's shorter than I would like, the waist will fit, but I don't think the hips will. The hood will be decorative, because it's just too small (I think that might be a design flaw though).
For those of you still working on it, don't get discouraged!
This is my first clothing item I attempted and obviously I have to get used to how sizing works in a pattern! LOL! I'm still going to do the sleeves and finish this weekend. Don't know what I'll do when it's done though. I did make it with wool so maybe I can shrink it and give it to my 7 year old to wear?

I do think that the pattern was a little on the small side- when I'd done the first couple of rows on the back I could see that it was going to be a little small so I started again adding a 6 extra stitches to get an extra inch or so.
I'm not sure what you could do to make it fit better- perhaps you could add a side panel at the bottom too to give it a little more room (you could add the decorative panel to these side panels so that it continues all around the sweater). If the waist fits in the right place you could add some rows of granite stitch worked around to make it a little longer.
Not sure if this will work I think better when I've got the pieces in front of me if that makes sense.

Mel, that's not a bad idea. I'll have to make extra panels but if that will help it fit correctly, it should be ok. I might make two for each side so both the front and back are extended the same amount and I don't run into trouble attaching the arms.
Thanks for helping me think about it more clearly. I guess I have a little more work than I originally thought.
Overall though? This is a very easy sweater to do once you realize how everything gets attached.

Now that I have the back done, I just don't want to stop! I am terrified of joining the pieces together, but I think as long as my kids keep quiet and my husband doesn't ask when dinner's going to be ready, I can get through that first row just fine. :lol

I was planning on making the same size as the model also. I haven't started mine yet as I am still waiting for my supplies to arrive. Could you be more specific on how 'off' the pattern is via size so I know before I start? I guess what I'm asking is what size do you think the model is wearing as in 'off the rack' sizes...6? 18?
I've never crocheted a garment before so I'm still kind of freaked out about trying this one.

Right... I was wondering how much smaller the pattern runs, as I am making the second to the largest one, and if I will need to make the largest one, my dye lot will sooo be off.
I too have never done an actual piece together garment, so I am flipping out as well.

I'm doing it in Paton's fresco (a tape yarn), and it looks very similar to the one in the book. Very cheap. I will be bummed if I have to buy more of this yarn, because I just made my sister a cape with it and I'm sick of looking at it!!

I personally quite enjoy doing the back section. It is a nifty pattern stitch that is pretty w/o being too terribly difficult, nor bulky as crochet can sometimes do.:cheer

I am having big time angst over this! I tend to stitch pretty tight, to get gauge I am using a K hook. I am making the largest size (52). The yarn I am using is Lion Brand wool ease in Chestnut Heather. I am loving the color. However, I am terribly frightened it may not fit. Ahhhhh, the joys of making an actual garment!:eek

Ok I put mine down for a bit, but after completing an afgahn for my mother in law (I just love Q hook crocheting) and beginning a simple poncho for my daughter, I felt guilty for not finishing this project for myself - sooo I picked it back up and organized the pieces (labled them) and began working on joining the front left/right and hood panels, and I've found it's not as hard as I was making it out to be in my head. I've gotten to row 4 on the insert band pattern on joining them, but it's time for bed. I am going to work on it more tomorrow!!!
Once that's completed, I think I might pin mine together to check the fit, before joining and might do as others have suggested and improvise if need be and add an extender panel or two ;) . We'll see.

Thanks everyone, I'm so excited :)
I was a bit scared about the size at first, but it ended up being about true for me....once I get it all together, I'll take a picture with it on. I made the biggest size. I did go longer on the sleeves (as it would be terrible if they were slightly too short) but they ended up being too long (about the amount I did extra) but that's fine with me... They are quite wide at the wrists, almost thinking of improvising and doing some kind of "drawstring" on the wrists in case I want to close them and be a bit warmer. I don't know though, first I just want to get the dang thing assembled.
Going to try to get some of it done now... :hook

Motivated by April's gorgeous piece, I started my hoodie....again. I hadn't gotten that far the first time before I panicked, so I just ripped out and started over.
I chained my first row, did the v stitch and started the granite stitch pattern. It looks great !! however....(isn't there always a 'however?')....the starting chain part appears smaller, so the piece has sort of an arc to it. Is this because my tension/guage is changing? Can someone tell me how to correct this? If I start with a looser first chain, will that help? Does first chain row always have less give to it?
Have I asked too many questions yet? :hook Any yelp is greatly appreciated.

Nah, no however.... the piece does in fact 'shrink' when you do the insert band pattern. This is where it will accentuate the waistline. Also giving the hoodie some shape to it.

Yelping here... :lol Sorry, couldn't resist, lol!
I've been following this thread as I am thinking about trying this pattern myself. But in answer to your question, yes the starting chain will often tend to be tighter than the rest of your stitches, which is why it is often recommended to make your chain with a larger hook than the pattern calls for and then switch to the proper size when you start the first row. This is especially valuable if you tend to work your stitches tight. That should help give you more ease along that edge.
And as Lady Garnet pointed out, when you get to the insert band, expect your piece to "shrink", it is part of the pattern there.
Good luck! Don't know how soon I'll have a chance to get around to this one, the yardage requirement is a bit daunting for me at this time.

THANK YOU! :) This is invaluable information. Thanks also to those who wrote in help, or yelp. :lol I ended up ripping out what I had done and rechecked my guage. Then went with a larger hook. That turned out really nice! :manyheart
I've been contemplating this pattern for awhile, but the amount of yarn the pattern calls for kind of scares me! :eek How close did your project work out to the amount of yarn specified for your size in this pattern, may I ask? Was it pretty much on track?
I'm also still trying to figure out which size would be the best one for me to make for myself. They stated the pictured version on the model was the 45 inch one, which probably explains why she looks like she's swimming in the darn thing - she's a tiny gal (I seem to recall most items she's modelled have been either small or extra small)! I don't know why they couldn't pick a model that the sweater would have fit better, or had a smaller version of the sweater to use with this particular model, this one makes neither look flattering! And it sure makes it that much more confusing trying to figure out which size is best for me! I remember reading that others were having similar issues with deciding which size they should work too, so I know I'm not unique here.
But anyway, back to the yardage requirements. Taking the info given in the pattern and selecting, say, the 45 inch size, I would need 2,768 yards of yarn for this project! :eek:eek:eek Is that right??? :think
Maybe it's because I've never made a full-blown sweater like this before, but I didn't think it would take as much yarn to make a sweater as it would to make an afghan. I'd like people's thoughts on this, as I had been considering picking up some more Wool-ease from JoAnns this week while it's on sale for $1.77 each. I've got 6 balls in 3 shades of pink and thought I'd like to make a colorblock version of this hoodie.
Sorry to be so long-winded! :confused

I think it will be worth a little frogging to get it how we want it- I finished the back of mine last week and started on the first side panel- I just don't have a great deal of time to spare on working on it at the moment (although I think I might treat myself to a couple of hours on it once I get the kids in bed tonight).
I've been having a little think about how to split the front- it shouldn't be too difficult since we actually only need to split the bottom panel- but I can see that it might take a couple of attempts to get the number of stitches right so the insert band works.

Oh wow Mel! I had not even thought about just splitting the bottom front panel!:think I am actually making the side and front insert bands longer to go all the way down to the bottom hem. So rather than having the horizontal band at the waistline, it will ideally be more slimming with the vertical panels going top to bottom. We will both have to post pics of our altered hoodies!

Hoodies are so EASY. (And so "kewl", as I am told by my teen daughter)
Not familiar with the pattern you are using, but....
Easiest way to do one is the top-down design.....
Start at top of hood and work down. All one piece and only ONE seam to sew. I'll have to look for the site that gave the best instruction that I learned from. Will post it tomorrow if I can find it. It's a very generic design, but VERY effective.
The Bernat "denim" is awesome for this project but thier pattern for the hoodie sucks. I actually paid for it - and never used it.
Start with a chain of about 70 (top of hood) and do alternating rows of your favorite pattern stitch until hood is the right length. Sew top of hood together (THE only seam in the whole project) When you get to the bottom of the hood (the neck) crochet "in the round" - either all right-side rows or reverse them - whatever - and then work increases (x4 "corners") until it fits torso and underarms. Crochet all but the arms from there down to fit your own body. Then you work the arms off the skipped stitches from the body and you are done.
I wish I knew where the digi- cam was ( my 17 year old daughter has it) .... you would LOVE the hoodie I did ---- in only about 3 days...

Thanks Garnet! I fear that I will not be going anywhere near mine until after Christmas or New Years. I'm just hoping I can get my mind back into it after being away from it for a while (not to mention keeping the gauge the same!)
Me too- I've not even been able to look at it for a few weeks- I've just had that many other stuff to do. I am almost completely done with gifts now I just hope I remember about it when I finally do have the time- I can just imagine me finding it months later lol

Alrighty, back from holiday and all. I even brought my hoodie in progess to Vegas with me. Only to determine that I have not enough yarn! :( This week I will have to locate more. Not only did I run out of yarn, but I am having serious doubts that this is going to fit me. Huge bummer. Oh well, perhaps it will make a dandy giftie for someone else. lol:eek

Alrighty ladies...
I bought more yarn, alas it is a different dye lot. However I think it will be okay. As I am on the last front insert band (the one that attaches the sides and hood panel). I believe it being a wee bit off may add to its character and show off that insert pattern more, like an accent.
I have put all other UFO's on hold until I complete this piece. IT HAD BETTER FIT ME! :o)

Hi ladies! I am not even close to being able to join you, but this hoodie is on my list of things to do! I hope this thread will be here for awhile. I could maybe start it at the end of February or March. Meanwhile, I am going to keep checking out your progress and pictures! Hope to join you soon.

I haven't forgotten about this- I did find my yarn for this out recently but am unsure that I like the colour now :lol I've only completed the back so starting again with a new colour shouldn't be that bad- I just haven't got round to gettting the yarn and starting again yet- think I must have burnout from all the xmas crochet I had to do.

Right- I got my new yarn a couple of days ago and have made a good start- I've nearly caught up to what I'd done with the other yarn, have only got an inch to do on the back- will try get a pic of what I've done so far but since my mum took her camera back I'm finding it hard to get a good pic with mine.
I am determined to get this completed over the next few weeks :hook

OK.. even with the slight difference in the dye lot and my changing the pattern around a bit to make it an open front, rather than an over the head deal... it seems to look similar to the original. lol ;)
I will get a pic up tomorrow after it dries... just completed steam blocking it. Wish me luck. Prior to steam it fit but was a bit smallish in my chest; err maybe my chest is too big! :eek In either case, maybee it will look proper on me after steam, if not I have a smaller chested friend who will give it a good home. Better than having it sit in my closet or in the frog pond.
How is yours coming along?

I have to really check the gauge on this one, I don't want it to be a frog project. :hook

Alrighty gang, here it is! I highly recommend steam blocking it, as it gives such a nice drape and finished, professional look to the garment. However it still does not fit me in the chest area. So... it shall be a gift. I am sad, I was truly hoping to finally make something for myself. Oh well. Next project!

I've been thinking of starting this pattern since I got the magazine, and I couldn't get row gauge. I did a search on google to see if anyone else had the same problem, and found myself here! I had NO idea this hoodie wasn't open all the way down until I read these posts! :eek
I'll be watching to see how you guys reworked the pattern for it to be open all the way down. I'd love if you shared how.
So...did anyone else have row gauge problems? I had no trouble with 13 hdc=4", but 14 rows for 4"? No way, mine came to 11 rows, and I was really squishing the hdc's.

Wow you did a great job with that :clap
I've been working on some projects for charity over the last few days but I have promised myself some time to work on it this week some time. I AM going to get this finished.

I've not been working to any gauge- I'm wanting mine to be looser and a little bigger [especially since the yarn called for in the pattern has a stretch to it]- so I've been using a bigger hook and working from the measurements given. Hopefully it will turn out ok :xfin

I've been watching this thread ever since it started. I started on my version of the hoodie back in November but had to put it away for the month of December while I finished up a few Christmas gifts. Once January came along, I was able to pick it back up and have been working on it steadily ever since. I'm making the hood pieces right now. One's finished and I'm within three rows of having the second one done.
My problem is that I just don't see how they're supposed to work with the rest of the hoodie. 79 stitches long and 5 inches wide. Isn't that going to make a monster sized hood? I'm assuming that it works since there are a couple of finished sweaters shown here and nobody's said anything about the hood being wrong in the pattern. Ugh. It just seems weird. I'll lock away that monster who's whispering in the back of my head and keep going forward.
I did alter the pattern since I'm working the hoodie in two colors. I'd have made it all one color but I decided to stash bust some Simply Soft that I'd bought for another project that I know I'll never get around to. I was about a skein short of being able to do it all one color. Bummer. The math of figuring out where to put the pink stripes wasn't so bad, though. Well, not really. (I can say that now that I'm done figuring it out!)
The two front panels were supposed to be worked up and down but trying to do the math to make the color changes in it made my head hurt so I worked them side to side instead. I think I only made them a couple of stitches too wide which I'll take care of when I connect them to the back piece.
I need to decide if I'm going to make the sleeves all one color or add a stripe in. I have enough yarn to do it either way so the lazy me might just go with having only one color. (less math that way!)

Checking back!
Yeah... glad to see a few others done..or (almost)
Ohhh I like the open front!!!!
About the hood, it was weird for me to figure out (my hubbie figured it out for me...and he isn't even yarn savvy), anyway I remember when I was putting it together that I wish the book had shown the assembly, but it wasn't toooo bad.

Sorry I forgot to update on my progress- I actually finished this about 3 weeks ago but because of my tempremental camera I haven't been able to get a half-decent pic of this. I like the open front but I think when I altered the size I made it a little big- its nice and cosy but it slips of my shoulders quite a bit. I'll probably make another one but I'll choose a nicer yarn this time- I used cheap acrylic and whilst the colour is lovely the sleeves looked bobbly within a week.
