Well, it looks like a basic basketweave stitch (http://www.obgidge.com/lesson09.html) pattern.

What I'd do is use just normal DC to get up to, say 26 (as that's the number of sts in the lesson I linked to), then the basketweave stitch until time to increase again, & use smooth DCs every time I increased.

As an alternate, you could make a normal 3-D oval and use front-post DCs in groups of, say, five, then just normal DCs for two or three. That would be easier, I think, to increase in pattern. (Just remember, if you do that, an FPDC will always be an FPDC, so once you increase you'll wind up with more than your starting number of FPDCs in each repeat.)

That's for the body of the grenade. The rest you could just do in plain single crochet.

A lot depends on how stylized you want it. Here's a link to a pretty good picture of a hand grenade for you to look at. Personally I'd go off the picture and do it freehand rather than trying to translate the knit pattern.

That is so cute (feels weird to call a grenade cute).
If you make one, be sure to post a pic.

Also, this:.
"I really do believe this," he says. "If more people knitted, the world would be a more peaceful place."

may not be true. I've gone into some pretty big rages whilst knitting on dpns.

I agree with Sabra i would do it freesyle. If you wanted you could do it in Tunisian .Just have a play and see what suits you. Jacqui

Yeah, that's probably what i'll do. I've got a few projects in line first though! And, I don't have that type of green yarn just yet.

I'm working on a afghan, and some other projects. my MIL wants me to make her a poncho, and I want to make a shrug for myself, one of the ones from lion brand. i want to make the one with the pearls.

Yes, I saw this pattern in a knitting book, called"weave", It's starting with a triangle. I think it should be possible to crochet on it.
