This isn't a pattern, per se, but more like the notes I made while I was making it.

Here are pictures as a guide.

"Used post stitch to create relief pattern. Straight until crown is complete, the ribs spiral in one direction. Try with alternate ribs going in opposite directions. Decrease after ever spiraled rib stitch to prevent flare. Post stitch every stitch for 1 round at least to create brim."

Here's a really, super crummy pattern to go with the hat. I hope that somebody can make some use of it! :blush

Ch 4.
sl st to form a ring.

1. Ch 3, counts as first dc. 9 dc into ring. sl st to top of ch 3.

2. Ch 3. Dc as normal, but also post stitch every other stitch. This is the increase. Sl st to top of ch 3.

3. Dc as normal, matching up the post stitches with the previous row's.
Repeat 3 to size.

When the crown is as large as you wish, it is time to begin the spiralled effect.

4. Dc as normal, but go one normal dc past the previous post stitch. Then post stitch the previous one. Work a decrease. Continue around until the hat is as deep as you want, making sure to leave room for a brim if you wish.

5. Post stitch every stitch for a band of whatever depth you desire. Mine was 2 rows, but I wish that it had been more like 3 for the effect to be more noticeable.

Notes: This pattern is not perfect, I know it's not because I had some trouble getting the spiral to move correctly across the chain threes. However, I believe that once you have made it that you will understand the construction and be better able to manipulate it to do what you wish. I am considering making the posts spiral in opposite directions in the next hat I make.
