i would like the shrug of mrs who, but instead of the collar :think not sure if its possible or not
but would like to make one without but still having the full back to it.
as its made in the round would it be possible to seperate the collar from the back :blush

I had exactly the same thought and actually attempted it, but as the top of the round forms the collar as the bottom round creates the back, it takes more manipulating than I felt up to. The way I attempted it was to do half rounds to create the back only, starting above my armpits when I had it on. I ended up with square corners coming out of the "corners?". To make it work, I think you would have to do a tapered edge with decreases at the beginning and end of each row. But like I said, didn't feel like stressing over it. I decided I am going to make a shrug/sweater from the crocheted vest pattern in Desperate Crochet. I have used this pattern and it is so much nicer to work for an open front sweater without a collar.

The pattern is basically make two rectangles half the width of your back by the length of your shoulders to waist/hips x 2. The you sew the edges together to create armholes, then join the back seam. (This is my addition to the pattern, cause I didn't want a vest)Then if you want sleeves, join at the underarm seam and go in rounds to the desired length, you can even do some decreases on the sleeves to create a more tapered sleeve if you prefer.

I've been trying to figure out how to do a smaller collar. (I hate big ones, I look and feel awkward in them, I am short, my neck is short.)

What I am thinking is best to take a doll or a teddy, make the rectangle to fit it and play with the design. It will need some tapering at the ends . Should work.

I was just thinking:

If you look at the pictures of Mrs Who's recent blue shrug, you can clearly see that it is essentially a circle with sleeves.
The seam on the sleeves essentially coincides with the circle's diameter.
Now, what if one was to crochet a giant circle with openings for the arms at a predetermined spot away from that line. (I wish I could draw it)

So there would be a longer part on the bottom and a shorter one on top as desired. One would measure backwidth (under the arms) and that would be the distance you start your opening on the circle. Such opening would need to be as large (or larger) as one's upper arm (so you need to measure your upper arm circumference, divide by 2) Then you just continue your circle as desired.
You could leave it sleeveless, or you could add sleeves.

What do you all think?

Have you taken a look at the Cotton Candy Shrug (http://gramma.tiker.net/cotton_candy_shrug)? It doesn't have a collar.

This one seems to have a very small collar, she followed the schematics, but somehow....it is not so fluffy. It is more the look I want, and when I make one, will follow her instructions for the "ruffle" portion.

See that one is my own:lol
The problem is that it is a shorter version of the shrug. Therefore it does not close/overlap in the front. What I would like is one that closes, yet the collar remains small.

'Chelle's "sweater jacket" uses this idea and I just saw another pattern somewhere which worked similarly. 'Chelle's has the arms above the center point of the circle, so the circle hangs rather ovally down the back, for a nice effect. The one I recently saw had the arm holes on the center line of the circle and was sort of top-heavy, if you know what I mean.

As for the shrug without the collar, why not do a bolero? http://www.angelyarns.com/kits/bolero.php?PHPSESSID=19cf456012959f5bb5c095e64db77 fbc

:ty
There is a basic "pattern" in post #28 of the thread.
It is the same as Mrs Who's schematics, except I did not do as many rows/increases. (My daughter is not into frilly shrugs)

I guess, the circle idea is not for me...
I really like it more fitted.
