It isn't a pattern I created myself, but I'll be happy to tell you about it and explain how I am doing it, in case that makes it easier for you to figure it out. The pattern is the Easy Ripple Afghan you can find online -- a great pattern , and truly very easy. I sent you an email to tell you how to figure out your starting chain, etc. I think that even though the pattern is easy, some crocheters do get thrown off by not being able to "get" how to figure how many chains they need to start, for example, so they wind up with extra chains at the end. This may help.
