View Full Version : Skein A Week

I had this thought. I've been wanting to make myself an afghan in Homespun for a long time now, but that's a lot of money. I can afford a skein of Homespun every week, though. I know it's the same amount of money in the end, but dishing out $4.50 or so a week seems a lot less painful than paying whatever it would cost all at once.

Does anybody else have any major projects they can't afford to splurge on all at once (they don't have to be blankets, they don't have to be Homespun)? I know this is a busy time of year, :juggle so you could jump in whenever. What do you say? Anybody wanna join me?

Here's the beautiful button Anne (Lavelle26) made for us.

I am so with ya......I have a major project in mind for a special friend way way up north but the money is holding me back....I checked and found a no dye lot yarn I can use, this way no worries of the dye lot running out. I have two projects I MUST finish and will jump on this big time!

Great Idea!:clap

I've been collecting yarn for a stole I plan on making after Christmas. It's in a variety of textures, using novely yarns in browns. I finally have enough, buying the yarn of choice when it came on sale. That was just the only way I could do it. I can't wait to have time to make it!!!! Gotta get those gifts finished first!

I feel your pain.

I want to make that cathedral window afghan, but even the cheapest yarn I can deal with (I really don't like most acrylic... reminds me of the itchy sweaters mom used to make me) would mean $75.

I have the $ to spend, thank goodness, but do I *really* want to spend that much on an afghan I don't know if I'll adore when I'm done??

I can't get myself to do it.

But, I think that's a great idea what you want to do. Everyone deserves a treat, and $4.50 a week certainly isn't bad.

I spend twice that when I get a margarita at the local bar.

Wow, you guys responded fast! :eek I'm glad you liked my idea. BluesForCP, I know exactly what you mean. There are all these beautiful patterns out there, but why dish out so much money when you're not sure you'll absolutely love it in the end?

CraftyCritter and Dogymom, I'm glad you'll be joining! :cheer I can't wait to see your finished projects!

I believe Homespun is dye-lotted, so you may end up with a large variation in color, also if you plan to buy over __ weeks, then you run the risk of the color being discontinued or just hard to find. I would suggest that you take the $4.50 each week and put it in an envelope or jar, designated for your afghan. I find it easier to save if I put it out of the way, where it isn't easily available if I run short at the grocery store, or for the kids etc. Then when you have the money saved for the entire ghan, maybe Homespun will even be on sale and you can get a special treat for yourself as well. This is generally what I will do, when I want to get something that is a little out of my price range all at once.

I sort of do this. I want to make a sweater with dk weight tweeds. I will stick to the same brand maybe, but I want it to be an ugly sweater. As in so ugly it's brilliant. I get a skein or two of the good stuff at the LYS each time I go and will do random though patterned stripes once I think I have enough.

i think its a great idea.. especially if you are doing stripes anyway .. dye lot wouldnt matter.. and you dont feel the hit so bad.

its also a good idea.. if you can do it .. put the money in a jar til you have enough .. but that would never work for me LOL

Same with me......you are not alone. I can hold back money for important, big things...for a while. But something small like 20 bucks of yarn...I can rationalize using the mulah cuz, ya know the yarn probably will go on sale at a later date so a few bucks is no biggy. I always assume I can come up with it later and it not effect me.....:think Ben Franklin would be so disappointed, a penny saved is a penny earned..yea right, did he ever crave a hot chai tea?:blush

I try to buy extra yarn each payday to add to the stash. Of course it still gets used pretty fast. Another thing I do is this....I have a seperate savings account from our normal pay the bills type account. It is not connected in any way (overdraft or anything like that) It is purely for e-bay and other craft items. I put $20.00 or so in every two weeks and when I need it, I have to get in the car, drive to the bank, and withdraw it. My basic laziness of going to the bank keeps me from spending it carelessly. It also keeps me in a budget and I can see where all that little extra money goes.

Hi all,
I'm thinking about doing this because I just LOVE :manyheart the Homespun Yarn! If you have a Wal-mart close by, especially the Supercenters why not put the yarn on layaway?? They usually have a great selection here. Not sure about other places. I'm also going to check how many layaways I can have!! heehee

A couple of weeks ago, I made the mistake of waiting to get the last skein for a poncho and had to dig around at JoAnns where I originally bought the yarn and, thank goodness, found a slightly undone skein of homespun in the correct dye lot in the clearance bin! WHEW!! :yay

Ya'll take Care,
Sincerely

Hey all,

Smiley's yarns has some colors of homespun on sale right now for $2.99 a skein. If you order from them, you do have to order at least $30 worth of yarn and shipping will cost you $10 but if you have someone you can split an order with, it really makes it pretty reasonable.

I'm the biggest thrifter in the world (I think) and this is something that I really have to do most of the time... I agree that if you need a lot of yarn and you're using a yarn that's dyelotted that you need to be careful but it depends on what you're making...

I made an afghan that took about 20 skeins to finish and I just bought one a week. Even though several of the skeins ended up being from different dye lots, it turned out great. Some patterns are very forgiving of variations in the colors whereas others are not...

Heck, when I made that FCEC Tote Bag with Landscapes yarn ($6.99 a skein) there was NO way I could afford it all at once so once I week I went to Michaels or wherever with my 40% off coupon in hand to buy another skein. It took me quite awhile to finish it, but even though I spent the same amount I would have if bought all at once, it didn't hurt the pocketbook nearly as much and my hubby had (still doesn't know) just how much money I spent on that thing!!!

antara
October 27, 2005, 11:09 PM
Believe it or not, I do put money away for things. I've been putting $50 out of each paycheck, plus the entire amount of every fourth paycheck, away because I want to do some travelling this summer. Between that, buying gas, and trying to save some money for when I'm on my own, among other things, dishing out however much money for a Homespun afghan just isn't gonna work for me. It's exactly like Beth said. This way, you don't feel it so bad.

I've been thinking it over and I'm in. I want to make a shrug for a friend at work and I want to make it with the Pooch yarn it calls for. It's only 6 skeins (I think), but that stuff is expensive, so I think I'll go with a skein every pay check (which is 2 weeks). That way I should have the yarn in time for the first of the year.

May I join in on this CAL? I am new here and don't know how this works but I am wanting to make myself a shawl out of Caron Bliss at $3.71 a skein. Not too expensive but not cheap. I would be able to get a skein every paycheck. (twice a month) By January or February, I should have enough for my shawl. (now I need a pattern.)
So, tell mw how to join in this CAL and what the requirements are and I will join in!!:hook

I"m sure most of you are probably aware of this, but I thought I'd post it anyway.
www.smileysyarns.com have great prices. You just have to buy $30 at once, plus $8 shipping. But if some of you live close together, split an order! I'm getting some bernat galaxy from Smileys for $3 a skein instead of $5! And splitting the order with a friend. Win Win.

This is what I do. It's much cheaper.
I go to:
http://www.auntmarysyarns.com/Aunt_Marys_Mill_Ends.htm

and buy the Mill ends at $5.99 a pound. I buy a few pounds of it and mix it with other yarn. The afghans turn out very pretty that way. Plus it's lots cheaper.

There are so many beautiful things I want to make, but I'm afraid to invest the $$ and have it turn out terrible! That's why I'm sticking to one skein scarves right now. I've done two in sc's, now I'm going to try dc', the tc's and so on. Then I get the practice on different stitches without investing a lot, so when I finally do decide to make that afghan or sweater or stole, it won't be horrible. :blush

So, i still consider myself new to crochet, i only know two stitches that i've taught myself, but i decided i would try to do the "Waterfall" afghan. Its on the Lionbrand skein of Homespun, so i have multiple copies of the directions (someplace), and i even think its on their website. I used the Homespun in Colonial..

Well, two years later, and four dye lots later, my afghan is half finished. i tried to do they "buy two skeins a week" a paycheck thing....Only if your really keen to color would you see the change (the afghan gets darker) and i'm tired of working on it. its a heavy yarn, and i feel like i have to set the thing down everytime i finish a row. Silly me, i wanted to make the afghan bigger than the directions, so i have a half finished full size futon afghan.

Perhaps an alternative is not to try to buy the same color, each time you buy a new skein buy a differnet color as long as they all go together, doing broad stripes would work. I've been burned too many times to count when yarn even with the same dye lot doesn't match, I would never take the risk of buying it a little here and a little there.

I have found Homespun very inconsistent in color and thickness. The inside of the skein is thinner and paler. Also, the small thread wrapped around the yarn sometimes has knots. Also, there are blob of what seems to be glue or something similiar.

I am finishing the lap blanket in Homespun which I am giving to an aunt.
Unfortunately, the thickness of the blanket is obviously uneven due to the poor quality of the yarn.

I won't be buying Homespun anymore.

I love the feel of homespun and finds it works up fast, both good qualities....but in all the years I've crocheted have never had so much problem with the skein not pulling out correctly as Homespun does, or glue from the label on the yarn, or knots cause they've tied the skein rather than discarding it. I find that very disappointing in a yarn thats not cheap but any means. I've actually emailed them about it multiple times and never even received the courtesy of a reply. Lady I work with who's also crocheted for years also complains about the difficulty of these factors with regard to Homespun, so you are not alone. Though since I like the yarn, as does she; we've continue to put up with it when thats the type of yarn we want. Maybe if enough of us complained via email, phone etc, maybe they'd do something about it.???

The inconsistant color though really makes it essential to purchase all at one time.

This Homespun doesn't exist here in Argentina :think but I get the point what you are talking about. When I don't have enough money for all the skeins needed, I just tell the lady at the yarn shop and she takes the skeins and puts them in a box with a label with my name. I return to the shop everytime I have the money and take one or two skeins. This way all the skeins are the same and exact colour. :manyheart

I have nearly talked myself into making a tablecloth this year. I'm still new to thread but can get around. I found a pattern in Crochet!

This is my first post but I joined so I could join this crochet along (amongst other benefits as well) Anyway, I had been lurking for sometime and had read this thread awhile ago. I have all of my yarn -- It is a combination of Red heart light and lofty and homespun. I bought the light and lofty for another project but that didn't turn out, then I found this great homespun Afghan pattern and so will be using that. I am going to get started on my tonight.

This is my first Crochet a-long -- If there are any things I should know please tell me.

Yay, I am excited :yay

Here is a picture of the colors that I chose: It is for my youngest daughter, she is 2.5 I think the colors are perfect and girly, although after I got that first block done I kind of want to make an afghan for me with the cream, purle and green ;)http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-7/1043380/Yarn.jpg

Just curious...Is everyone starting their projects as they buy the yarn or waiting until they have all the yarn to start?

I have purchased all the skeins I need for one project....initially I needed yarn for 2-3 projects...so while my first project is in the works I am buying yarn for the second project...the third project has me shuttering already!:eek But hopefully the buying of the third projects yarns will happen as the second project is in the works...hmmm confusing....lol

Well y'all, I just finished my project! :clapI made the Purple Pizzaz Wrap from the Crochet! Jan. issue. It took 2 -4 skeins each of 7 different novelty yarns. Lots of yarn! It turned out very pretty, but I think next time I'll make it a little shorter (and use less yarn;)).

This is my darling daughter playing model. You can't tell how long it is in the photo, but if I put it around my neck, it hangs to the floor!:P

Sorry I haven't posted since I asked to join, but things have been crazy around here. It turns out that I had way more than enough to make that blanket for my dad in the homespun yarn that I bought on Ebay! I bought 12 skeins and only used 5 & 1/2! Now I have enough left over to make one for me!!!:clap DH liked it too and wants one in blue. Maybe I can have that one done for Father's Day.

Since I finished that I have made a baby blanket in some homespun my mom found at a yard sale and started on a round ripple baby blanket. I guess the round ripple can now be my skein a week.

Here is a link to pics as I am not sure how to post pics on here.

Just a thought, last month someone was saying that Homespun gets all fuzzy looking and it isn't as attractive as they expected. I don't know if this was after laundering or what.

I haven't had that problem before. When you wash it, it just seems to get softer and softer.

I have been doing poorly with this crochet along. I have only bought 4 skeins so far and I still have no clue what I am going to make with it. I was thinking of maybe a throw since the yarn I chose is soooo soft but I don't know how it will do in a throw. Then I was thinking of maybe a shrug or shawl or even a hat and scarf set. I am leaning more towards the shrug or shawl idea since that would be wonderful to cuddle up in.

I am buying the Caron Bliss yarn in purple. (my fave color.) Hopefully once I get settled in next week up north I can return to purchasing this yarn.

I'm not doing well here either. I've been trying to get into a schedule to buy two skeins every two weeks when we get paid, but we are out of money again this paycheck. :thumbdown DH accidentally made our car payment twice so there will be no extras this check. :oops

I know what you mean Ginny. We were pretty busy here with Christmas guests all the way from England (and that pretty much wiped out any extra money we would have had but hey...it was Christmas and who has extra money at that time of year anyway) and then dh just deployed last weekend and now I am packing up and things just cost money.:( I don't know why!! Seems silly to me that we should have to BUY yarn. It should be supplied to us. I mean (at least for me) yarn is what keeps me from going insane.:hookI think if people really understood this, they would supply us with all the yarn our hearts desired. (or at least made the really nice yarns cheaper than the inexpensive ones...like Red Heart.)

i finished my hooded scarf that i made for ME (a rare occurance). then, a couple of days ago, i was cruising around on Dot's site and found the clint eastwood style poncho. i used to have a sarape-type poncho and loved it. sooooo, here i go again. it's gonna take quite a bit of yarn and i want to use the squishy soft stuff and probably 3 or 4 colors for the stipes, so i'm back to buying a skein or 2 a week unless i find something on sale. i'm thinking of doing browns and grays. it might be neat to try to figure out how to put a hood on it, too. but i'm getting way ahead of myself. i'll be doing good to do the poncho. hopefully, i'll get it done before next fall. :lol
