Hi Everyone -
A small group of people in the 63 Wannabee Group has this leaflet and plans on starting on this afghan as a crochetalong soon .
If any of you out there want to participate in this and you don't yet have the book, here is the place I order online from : http://www.countryyarns.com/
I just cannot say enough nice things about this lady -- she is terrific . She is very speedy about getting your order processed and mailed out to you and very eager to help search for something she might not have on hand .
Here's the info on the name of the booklet we'll be using -
Look under Leisure Arts Leaflets
LA2755 35 GRANNY SQUARES COMBINE TO MAKE A GRANNY SAMPLER AFGHAN ($5.50) by Martha Brooks Stein; 35 8" variations on the granny square with instructions for an afghan, all in worsted wt. yarn
If you have this leaflet , or would like to get it to join in, please drop a note on here and let us know so we can all work on this together .I don't know if it's available at any local craft stores near you or not, but you might want to try looking there too, or possibly Ebay .
We will probably wait a little longer til starting , to see how much interest there is in starting this before we all begin and to allow people some time to get the booklet or get it ordered .
There's another lady on here who has made several of these afghans that
are just gorgeous. She will be coming in to post her photos and also will be making one along with us who haven't made one before and has offered to help out if we get stuck .
So drop in and let us know if you'd like to join us !
Thanks -

Hi, Here is part of my afghan
I have made this pattern at least eight times and everyone I give it to, loves it. I love it because it goes quick and is very satisfying to create, i.e., low frustration level!!!

Hi Donna
We'll probably wait about 2 weeks or so before starting on this. I'd like to give everyone time to order their booklets and get them , and to let the ladies in the Wannabee Group have more time to get their 63's done so they don't have to try and juggle both of these projects at once . Feel free to come in and post , if you want to tell about ordering your booklet, or what colors of yarn you are deciding on, etc . Hopefully, in that amount of time, we'll get a nice sized group in here that will participate . It makes the --along groups more fun if we keep the board really active too, so drop back in and tell us a little about yourself, how old you are, where you live, what you are working on now, just anything you want to tell us about yourself. That way, we all get to know each other a little better .
Thanks for showing such an interest !

It wouldn't be a group without you ! You and Sue have been great in the other group . You are both go-getters on the project and great posters !

Hello Olga ( AKA Spongebob ) :lol
Now, that's a new one -- even with babysitting my grandson, that's a show I have never seen . You'll have to fill me in on all the Spongebob stuff just in case I ever need to know all of it -- with a 3 1/2 year old grandson, it's good to be educated in all these cartoons so I'm up to date on them .
I didn't realize you finished your 63 !! It's BEAUTIFUL ~~~Did you keep it or give it as a gift to somone ?
It's great to have you here with us too !

Antara -If you find the time, we'd love to have you join us!
Hi Lynn !
Great to have you aboard . We'll probably wait a couple weeks til the actual start date . That should give interested people time to locate the book and get their yarn . Drop in and tell us a little about yourself ! We LIKE meeting new people and have a great time in our other group. I like a REALLY active board, so drop in anytime and post a note .If we keep in touch a lot , it makes the group more fun .
HEY VIMS !!!
Great to see you here and we'd love for you to join us with this project too . You are doing a wonderful job on the 63 -- the halfway point --keep up the good work, and I hope you wil be able to get a camera to take a photo of your finished afghan. We'd all love to see it !

Julie Kay, that is a gorgeous afghan and something I'd like to make someday. Is this going to be an open-ended CAL? No deadline for signing up and no deadline for finishing? I honestly can't imagine myself starting this one until next spring!
Lynn
October 29, 2005, 10:41 AM
Thanks for the welcome!:) I am sending off my order for the booklet today so I don't think it should take TOO long to arrive. I feel kinda guilty as I have so many unfinished projects sitting in the closet now, but this particular afghan is soooooo pretty. Have to go to Hobby Lobby to check the colors - don't have any idea what colors to do or who to make it for yet.:lol

October 29, 2005, 11:22 AM
Hi Natasha
No, we will run this pretty loosely here --anyone can sign up whenever they want and finish whenever they want . No pressure !
We'd love to have you join whenever you're ready .
Lynn,
You sound like me-- I have SO many ideas of things I want to make ( most of them afghans ) . I get way ahead of myself sometimes. I figure out what pattern I want to use, then the yarn( or sometimes I get the yarn first, then try to figure out what pattern would go with it , THEN the biggest dilemma. WHO to make it for !
I think most of us crocheters are all guilty of the same things -- we see patterns we want to try, yarn we want to try and have PILES of projects to do, then not enough time to do them all .
I am trying to learn to pace myself and ONLY do one project at a time . Once it's done, then I can start on the next .
( That doesn't mean I don't have a closetful of yarn waiting on me though ! :lol
Lynn
October 29, 2005, 11:26 AM
Yes, Julie, we are alike! ALL my unfinished projects are afghan's! I see a pettern that I just HAVE to make then get part way through it and get board with it and start another one that I just HAVE to make. Or, I will put one away to make something someone asks for then forget I have started yet ANOTHER afghan and begin another one. Then see the 5 bags of unfinished afghan's on my closet shelf!:lol
Lynn
JulieKay
October 29, 2005, 11:27 AM
My colors -
I have chosen Frosty Green for the entire afghan , then will probably do the edging in the variegated that has the greens, off white and lilac in it. Can't remember the name of it right now and too lazy to go dig it out of the closet .
I am debating whether to add a row of lilac around each square before joining them .
OH PAGAN !!!
I have your first Help Desk Question :
Would you be able to easily put a border of sc around each of the squares before joining them, or would it look stupid ? Just trying to decide whether to go get lilac or leave it off . I also have off white, which I could use for edging, but I'm trying to bring a little of the lilac out since it is in the variegated .
Decisions, decisions.....
JulieKay
October 29, 2005, 11:39 AM
Well, Lynn,
We are going to try to remedy our yarn disorder with this group . Let's see if we can both accomplish this together .
That's why I started the 63 Wannabee Group . I have wanted to make that afghan for YEARS -- bought the book, bought the yarn, started it DOZENS of times, then fizzled out . I thought -- " OK ... THIS IS IT ... IF I START A GROUP TO MAKE THIS, THEN I'LL HAVE TO FINISH IT . "
I stuck with it and got it done.
Now, my new goal is to get this one done. We have a real great group of ladies in here who are very dedicated to the afghan we are working on, and to the message boards. I like the boards to be REALLY busy-- that keeps the interest up . We might get on here and joke around or push each other to finish -- we use any means we have to, but we have all managed to really stick together and keep our rears in gear and get it accomplished. I think you'll really like it here ! A nice group to be in ! :U

Wow, Julie! There's a lot of interest in this CAL - looks like it's going to be lots of fun! :D I'm even more motivated than ever to finish 63 Squares and get moving on 35 Grannies. Thanks so much for getting this started, you make a great :cheer !
If we're going to start in a couple weeks or so, I'm going to dig around for a Michael's coupon for this one. I have a terrible habit of cutting out coupons and not using them! :ohdear Need to fix that! Does anyone know if Michael's has a coupon currently?

October 29, 2005, 12:57 PM
Well I'm debating on the kind of yarn and colors I want to use... Can anyone tell me what kinds of yarn are good for this and what kinds aren't? I want something that's nice and soft so I don't want to do the old Red Heart Super Saver... I'm thinking maybe Simply Soft by Caron... Heck, even their one pounder WW yarn is softer than Red Heart...
I love pinks and such so I'm thinking a burgundy and a light pink maybe??? I wonder how this would look with more than 2 colors... I can't wait to start this! I had so much fun with the FCEC Felted Tote CAL that I am anxious to do this one!!! It's so neat to see one pattern made so many different ways!!!
I think I am going to go to Jo-Ann's after work and scope out the yarn to get an idea of what I want....

Hi Sue-
Sorry I'm not much up to date on Mickael's . I rarely go there . It's quite a ways from here, so I usually just go to good old Walmart . Maybe someone else will know about the Michael's ad . Thanks for the compliment -- I like being the cheerleader-- it's pretty fun !
Donna -
Yes, the Simply Soft would be nice if you want something softer then Red Heart . And the burgundy/pink combo sounds really pretty .It is pretty neat to see what colors everyone chooses for these projects. Let us know what you decide on !

Hello Ladies -
I just emailed Jennie from the store I posted about earlier. She said she only has 5 of these booklets left in stock, so if you want one, try to get your order in as fast as possible. She also thinks they may have discontinued it, so we may have to do some shopping around for more if we get more people interested . I can go check over at the little craft store where I got mine if need be, but she only had this one out on the rack . I could ask her if she has any more of them in back.I'll go run over to ebay and check to see if anyone has one posted over there and let you all know !

Hi Julie,
The last round of each square is bordered in double crochets. If you made this round in your variagated , it could look like a frame around each center. So, I think that might be a way to go. It would pop out the centers, too.
The way I joined my squares was to sc them together on the reverse side. I found this to go faster than whip stitching, which I absolutely hate to do.
I love that Frosty Green color!

I have a couple questions. I cannot join right now, but I think your ghan pattern is fabulous. :manyheart I have a grandbaby due at Thanksgiving that is taking up my crocheting time, and then I have Christmas... Would after Christmas be too late to sign up? Also, what size are the squares? Do you make a couple of each square? The squares are sooo pretty (surely making them more fun to do)!

Lynn and Donna -
Don't worry, I'm sure she'll save one for each of you -- she is really good to work with you and I already emailed her telling her she may get multiple orders of this same book, so she was probably down there expecting them . You should have them soon, maybe one day next week I'd think ! I'm excited to get this one started . The squares sure are pretty and don't look too hard .
Lynn- what is your granddaughter's favorite color ?
and Donna -- what colors are you using ,did you decide yet ?
Quilty and Stitchin --
Hopefully some of us will still be here by after the holidays, if not, go right ahead and step in anytime you're ready -- the thread is open and available to anyone who wants to sign up. You guys will have each other to pass info back and forth to, and there were others that mentioned starting after the holiday. You may get a bigger group than we have right now !
And Pagan -- Holey Moley !!! You are a speed crocheter ! Great for you, to have 11 done already !!! WOW !
I have been putting off starting to wait up for Sue and Celeste to join us, now Lynn and Donna will also be able to start soon too ! This will be fun, you guys !:hook

Well Julie, my granddaughter's favorite colors won't work well on this beautiful sampler afghan. She has been in an orange and lime green mode for awhile now!:lol Her room is in pinks though so I thought the soft pink and burgundy might be nice. Shannon wears a lot of earth tones too so I could use those. I think I'll just ask her what she would like and hopefully she won't say orange and lime green!:D
Lynn
JulieKay
November 1, 2005, 09:38 PM
Well, Lynn
I can see your point about the orange and lime green . It probably would look a little LOUD for this pattern !
The pinks, burgundy and maybe even a neutral type color all 3 would be pretty !
Let us know what you decide .

Unbelievable!!! I had the order in the mailbox with the flag up and my mail carrier DID NOT take it!!!! I was soooo upset! When I get home it's dark so I had no idea til my hubby told me so I took the envelope and took it to the Post Office myself this morning. The guy there told me it shouldn't take more than 3 days to get there so hopefully she'll get my money by Friday! I HOPE I HOPE I HOPE!
I think I am going to go with a pink and a burgundy... I am deciding between using Caron Simply Soft and Caron Regular WW. The regular WW isn't avail in that many colors where as the Simply Soft has a lot to choose from. Rag Shop has that big sale this Saturday so I think I'll choose when I go there then. Can anyone tell me approx how much yarn I need??? THANKS!!! I am sooooo excited to start this CAL! I so enjoyed the Felted Tote CAL and it's so much fun to see one pattern interpreted so many different ways!

November 2, 2005, 01:27 PM
Hi Donna
Since you're in Florida and she's in Louisiana , she should get it in time . I wouldnt think it'd take very long for mail to go that far, unless it is slowed down due to all the storms they have had down there .
I don't have my book laying up here with me, but I think you need approx 14 ounces of one color and 18 of the other . It really doesn't take a lot for it . Maybe someone who has the pattern laying there handy can tell you the exact amounts .. Next time I come up, i'll get the exact amount for you .
I think Jennie ( the lady from Country Crochet ) will hold the book for you -- it doesn't look like there are a big number of people on here who are ordering it all at once, so with 5 available, you should get your order in in plenty of time .
JulieKay
November 2, 2005, 01:29 PM

How's the 63 coming together ?
Will be glad to see you over here in this group soon. I have to admit, after reading Pagan's post yesterday, I started my 35 . Boy, is it a breeze compared to the 63 --. Every square so far has come out EXACT in size -- do you believe it ? And this one will whip up quickly .
Looks like 63 PART TWO is not far off the Horizon ....... So get ready to LOAD EM UP AND MOVE EM OUT when we get to that one-- it looks CHALLENGING to say the least .

Hi all, I got my yarn the other day. I really wanted to use Ecru and tan like Pagan's pic but all the tan colored yarn at Michael's looked off somehow so I choose the colors from the leaflet, beige and light green. I still might run over to JoAnn's to see what they have - can't seem to settle on a winning combination...arg! :(
I'm glad you didn't wait for me, Julie, I seem to be getting side-tracked from 63 Squares, shame on me! :eek

Hi, One hint on the last rounds of each square is to make sure you get 23 dc's on each side. This will add up to the 92 dc's that is your final total.

Hi, In case you're wondering, I am using up the scraps of yarn that live next to my chair. I'm challenging myself not to break into any unopened skeins.I have some beautiful Dusty Teal but I think I want to make a shawl or capelet with it.
I've made this afghan 8 times already and since I already have one done in neutrals, I thought I'd get creative with this one. I'll sc it together on the front side with a neutral color.

WOW, those are just beautiful ! That is gonna be one pretty afghan when done. It's sure gonna make mine look washed out. I chose 2 very neutral looking colors, since the 63 I finished was ORANGE ... My eyeballs needed a rest, so I ended up using light Thyme and Eggnog . I may add one more color of a little darker green, I haven't decided yet , but my squares are all in one color .
I will have to get photos of them and get them posted -but it probably won't be before the weekend . My weekdays are a little high stress around here .
This week, I have watched Jumanji 783 times . If anyone wants a rundown of the lines in it, just ask -- I can type out the complete script from it from memory . I LOVE the movie , but DANG ------- How many times can you watch the same movie before you run out of the house SCREAMING at the top of your lungs ?:yell :yell :yell :yell :yell :yell :yell

Well, if you don't have the booklet yet, be on the lookout for the 63 MORE booklet -- we plan on tackling that in the near future -after we do our 35 grannies one -- It is very easy and will go quickly, so I hope to get started on our next 63 within a few weeks' time . It looks quite a bit harder than the first , so we're in for quite a challenge ! WE CAN DO IT THOUGH .:cheer:hook :cheer

Wow Pagan! Your squares are making me want to stop the 63 squares and pick this book up instead! But no I will not get side tracked, I will not get side tracked(rummaging through yarn bag to see if I have enough yarn for this or would this also be a scrap ghan) nope I will not get side tracked...
sigh please please let the 63 get over soon! I am going yarn shopping on Friday .. Hopefully I will find a match:)
Sue I forgot to answer your post in the 63 wannabe loop sorry about that.. This yarn that I am looking for is locally made here in India (I wanted something that I will be able to find easily ) also the shipping costs are almost twice that of the actual costs so I prefer to hoard on your yarns when hubby dearest visits the US on hos official trips:)

I want this pattern! :( (It's true that I'm not even close to finish the 63 squares... but I would love to own this lovely pattern.) I emailed the lady from country yarns but I haven't heard from her yet. Please... pretties please... if you know of somebody selling (or trading, or giving ;)) the booklet, let me know. I'm willing to pay more than the $5 or $6 it used to cost.
Thanks pretties,

Well Julie, my granddaughter's favorite colors won't work well on this beautiful sampler afghan. She has been in an orange and lime green mode for awhile now!:lol Her room is in pinks though so I thought the soft pink and burgundy might be nice. Shannon wears a lot of earth tones too so I could use those. I think I'll just ask her what she would like and hopefully she won't say orange and lime green!:D
Lynn
Hi Lynn... I have a friend who is an awesome quilter and she swears that Lime Green is the "Other Neutral" and makes a lot of things with orange/lime green combo. I would think that if you did use those colors, it would look awesome! Of course, years from now, it may be looked at the same way we look at avocado green stoves now! LOL! :lol
At any rate, I do agree with her that green can function like a neutral. It goes with everything!

Thanks for the info on the yarn... After seeing all of Pagan's squares I am considering doing what she's doing. Using all of my "scraps" of yarn instead of buying new... What a great idea! And how awesome it looks!!!! I'm still deciding but I love the idea of using all kinds of different yarns and getting rid of some of the scraps I have that are taking up space!
Lynn
November 3, 2005, 12:07 PM
Thanks Mare. Then maybe Shannon can have her lime green after all.:lol I do also like the idea of using scraps - Pagan Baby's squares look awesome done with scraps! I think I'll have Shannon come over look at the squares on here before she decides.

For those that are trying to find the 35 grannies leaflet , I had no luck at the small craft shop near us . I got the last copy she had and they are out of print .
I have tried searching online and still no luck finding them .
As heads up though ---
I have also ordered the following booklets and plan on doing --- Alongs with them, as long as there are interested people that want to do one with me . Maybe you can jump in and get these ordered now so you will be ready to start !
We will probably go in this order -
1- Currently doing 63 -LA # 555
2-Then LA # 2755 35 Grannies
3-LA # 2146 -63 MORE Afghan
4-LA # 2770 -Scripture Afghan
5-LA # 2864-Stitch a week ( 52 different squares )
I am checking with Jennie at Country Yarns on these -- she has plenty of the 63 MORES
Waiting to hear about the last 2 -- will let you all know what I find out .
Please check here -- I have photos of the covers posted so you can see what I'm talking about .

Ok guys --
I checked with Jennie at countryyarns.com
She has SEVERAL of the LA # 2864-- 52 patterns stitch a week . It is out of print, but she has lots of them at this point, so if you want one ,order now !
The scripture afghan is also out of print -- I just ordered it on ebay today so maybe you all could find it there .
We will try to stick with ones that are readily available , which are the 63 MORE and the one I listed above.
I guess we'll just play it by ear on the rest, but for now, we are still going strong over at the first 63 , and will proceed as best as we can with the 35 Grannies .
I sure hope we can get a big group together to do one of these . I REALLY like the 52- Stitch a Week -- it is really pretty , so maybe if we all order it in plenty of time, we'll all get to do it together !
I'll try to keep you all updated . At this point though , we have 2 going at once , so we'll try to get them finished up before moving on to a new one. I just thought some of you might like to pre-order the next one or two so you'll be ready in advance !:hook

I'm really bummed. I mailed my order for the booklet with a personal check to the lady at Country Yarns on Weds and she still hasn't gotten it yet! The Post Office said she should have gotten it in 3 days. It's now been 5 mailing days... Donna, that seems like an awfully short time to be in panic mode. Give it a while longer, cause stop payments are so expensive. I've had letters take up to two full weeks to arrive, and if it went out last Wednesday, don't count non business days, namely the weekend days, so it's not all that long yet.

I'd give it a few days yet before worrying about your check -- and I probably wouldn't stop payment on it, since it would cost more to stop payment than the check was probably for . I think it'll still be ok -- just wait awhile longer ! Let us know when you get the book .

Thanks goodness she got my money! Can you believe that the PO didn't postmark it til Fri when I mailed it on a Weds? Insane! Now I'm impatiently waiting for my booklet so I can get started!
Ok, if people want to do this can't find the booklet, could we sell or do a trade for it? I will probably not do 2 of these afghans so I'd be more than willing to trade my booklet for something of equal value after I'm done to someone who wants it...
Just a suggestion! I CANNOT WAIT TO GET STARTED! Paganbaby, stop posting all those pretty pics! I know mine won't turn out half as pretty! I cannot wait to see your completed afghan! It's gonna be gorgeous!

I love your colors Paganbaby! Are you doing a planned color scheme or just what strikes your fancy? I have a great deal of Simply Soft Brights left over from Blue Squares Too, and I was thinking of using them, then a neutral to join them.
PaganBaby69
November 10, 2005, 03:13 PM
Hi, losingmymind2 and Donnalynn2 and Julie, Thank you!!!What I'm doing is using up my scraps. I have made this afghan in neutrals and it is gorgeous that way, but I wanted to challenge myself to use up the yarn that is in 3 big bags next to my chair.
What I'm running into is that some of the variegateds are thinner than the solids, the squares are not all the same size, just a fraction off, but as long as the final count of 23 dcs on each side is correct, then I guess I'll steam them to all fit. Another idea I have is to work a round of granny square type stitches around in black and use the join-as-you-go method to attach them all together.
If you're using the soft yarns, don't mix it with non-soft yarns or you may have mixed sizes.
This afghan goes quickly in the 2 color variation because you don't really have to plan the different rounds.

Hello everyone ,
Just a quick note to inform you that Pagan has agreed to be the new leader for this group . I PM'd her earlier today asking if she'd consider it and she said yes, if it was ok with all of you . I'm sure you would all be ok with it !
I just felt that she has really done a lot more for this group. She is a lot further along on the squares-- she has posted photos of all her finished squares so far ,and she has made 8 of these afghans already , I think she said. She is now on square number 22 of this one !
She's a lot more experienced with this pattern than I am ,so I think she'd do a great job at leading you all on and answering your questions . So if you all have anything you need help with, give her a holler !
She'll do great , and thanks again Pagan ! :manyheart

Hi, Linda! I don't know if one can put the button in the signature line. I haven't seen anyone do that yet...has anyone else?
The button was meant to put in your blog. If you have one, you can put it in with this code:
<a href="http://www.crochetville.org/forum/showthread.php?t=15934" target="_blank"><img src="http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b77/robertsmom/Blog%20Button/35Grannies.gif" width="142" height="45" border="0" alt="35 Grannies"/></a>
Gee, I sure hope that works. I copied it from my own blog's template.:)

:think Hmmm... colors? I envision something colorful and scrappy. I am really drawn to deep, jewel-tones and rustic fall colors. In my crochet dreams :night (don't we all dream in "crochet"?) I see something with some type of fuzzy :fluffy yarn bits in the motifs, too. Of course, if money was no obeject... it would be fun to use some sort of yarn that had some slubs or thick/thin type texture... Oh - Great... do you see what you are doing to me? You are getting me to :badidea fantasize about this project and I still have to complete...
3 mostly finished felted bags
a Double size front and back post dc afghan (10 1/2 more lengthwise rows to go)
Queen size felt rag quilt (all blocks cut but need to be assembled and snipped)
twin size fleece throw (not even started but a quick project)
10 bath time baskets for my 2 best friends, my neices, sisters, cousin, Auntie and Mother in Law filled with crocheted face cloths, scrunchies, soap holders, poufs, and decorated flip flops (only 3 face cloths done) (I'm also putting soaps and candles in them)

I've posted 22 squares so far, but I made them in scraps. I have 13 more to make and I hope to post them next week. I like this afghan a lot and I know you will too. I made the *63* a looooong time ago, so I can understand if you have square burnout, but believe me, this afghan is a cakewalk!
I will be happy to answer your questions and cheer you on.

So did this cal officially start yet? Ya know I've never done a granny square and I would love to do a few, and this seems like such a great way to get started. I would be willing to join, if I could get my hands on the pattern. I would commit myself to one square a day and finish in like a month. Is it too late? I'm having so much fun with my socks, but I'll be finished with that today. So, if it's not too late, someone just let me know, and I'll spend the weekend tracking down the pattern.

Hi Guys -
Well, I have decided to step in and join you on this. I couldn't resist. These crochetalongs are addicting . Once you do one, you don't want to work on something alone then, because it's not as much fun .
I have my first 6 squares done. They are so pretty ! And really easy to do .
I'm not real sold on the colors I am using. I went down to our little craft store downtown that has like 7 skeins of yarn to choose from, so you're pretty much stuck with what they have or making a run to the next town and I had a CRACKING headache yesterday so didn't feel like going far .
So anyhow, I am using a hunter green , sage, burgundy, country rose and off white . It reminds me of Christmas but maybe it won't look like it once I get them put together .
Pagan is doing a wonderful job showing us all her finished squares ! She's gonna be done before we know it !
How is yours coming, Celeste ? Didnt you choose white and grey, or did you go with different colors ?

Hi Julie, Even the one with the popcorns go fast. I just made that witha green variegated center and a deep red border. The one I always have to re-do is #26 because I don't pat attention to the corner dc's. But on the photo I posted, I gave the hints.
I haven't posted # 19 yet, but I have a hint for that one too.

November 13, 2005, 06:59 PM
Hey Julie, I'm keeping this one because it's taking BRAIN POWER to combine colors that look good and to limit myself to the colors I have in this one room only. I need 35 solids and one neutral. I happen to have 2 SS's in black so that will be the neutral. What is shocking to me is that I have the 35 solids!!!!
PaganBaby69
JulieKay
November 13, 2005, 07:54 PM
Yes, Pagan ,
That would definitely take brain power to do the colors as you are ,trying to use different combinations for each square and to use so MANY colors !

Hi Julie, Forget 19 the way they said to do it. It's stupid. This is what you do, crochet #1. Now do a sl st and a ch 4 around the stitch junctions between round 1 and round 2. You'll have (sl st, ch 4) around. You should wind up with 8 chains. Do the same thing between the stitch junctions of round 3 and 4. You'll wind up with 24 chs. But I sometimes get 22, or 23. It doesn't matter, as the look is exactly the same but much easier.
I'll post mine tomorrow. I only have 5 more to do.

Yes, it does sound like you're antsy ! You'll be so glad to get the yarn on Thursday ! What colors are you going for, did you decide ?
It doesn't take a whole lot of yarn for this one !

Fickle me when out and got new colors for this 'ghan! :P Originally I bought RH in Aran and Frosty Green which are nice but I only picked green 'cuz there wasn't a tan color I liked. I made a trip to JoAnn's yesterday and spotted Caron SS in off-white and bone. Those are the colors I wanted in the first place! :) I'll have to save the green for another project which won't be a problem!
I look forward to starting this CAL soon. I've got to get the 63 squares together first! ;)

That's it, I'm starting RIGHT NOW. Looking at your squares Julie Kay really just did me in. What color are you joining them with. I can't wait to see the finished product. I have a ton of yarn around here, so let me se what I can make happen. I'll just have to really focus on finding a good joining color.

Hi Evelyn, Here is what I told Julie about square 19:
Hi Julie, Forget 19 the way they said to do it. It's stupid. This is what you do, crochet #1. Now do a sl st and a ch 4 around the stitch junctions between round 1 and round 2. You'll have (sl st, ch 4) around. You should wind up with 8 chains. Do the same thing between the stitch junctions of round 3 and 4. You'll wind up with 24 chs. But I sometimes get 22, or 23. It doesn't matter, as the look is exactly the same but much easier.
I have 2 more squares left and will post the last of my photos tomorrow.
I am going to do a black granny type border around each square to pop the colors.

I finished square 19 to me it looks like the picture on the back of the book, the black and white picture inside doesnt do justice to the square,I done mine red Im going to be using the yarn I have on hand so no telling what colors will be in it,:)
I will try to post a picture later

That's not being fickle at all ! Sometimes when you see a certain afghan pattern, the colors you want just pop into your head. You KNOW those are the colors you want before you even get to the store . I think the colors you chose will be pretty ! And thanks for the compliments on my squares .
Evelyn ,
Well, you are IN if you want to be ! We'd love to have you join us. I know what you mean about 19 -- it gave me fits . Pagan described an easier way to do it a few posts back, but if you're satisfied with how it turned out, I'd leave it alone !
and Evelyn and Necia --
Any colors you use will be fine .. this is such a pretty pattern I think it'd look good in almost any colors ! Glad you jumped in ,Necia-- I could tell it was driving you batty waiting to join us !
I am using the variegated, I think it's called Holly and Ivy to join my squares . The one with the reds, greens and off white in it .
This is a pretty fast-moving afghan . Doesn't take too long to get the squares made . 19 has been the only one to give me much trouble so far .
Pagan , Thanks for stepping back in to help Evelyn with the dreaded 19 ! You are doing a great job leading the group !

I made it up to Square 3 which is my favorite thus far. However it came out HUGE. The measurements is a 1/2" bigger than the required gauge. I'm going to try it again tonight, as there is a BIG chance that I got so caught up I repeated a round. I'm so loving how fast the squares are working up. My afghan is going to be Rainbow Brite for sure! I can't wait.

Hi Evelyn
Yea, a couple of mine turned out a little smaller or larger than the others, but after doing the 63, this one doesn't seem nearly as bad. The squares aren't off by too much at least !
Necia-
I'm sure yours will turn our just fine, and yes the squares do go quickly. I just finished my last one. Now to put this thing together !

I got my pattern in the mail!!! I was shocked that it was spanking brand new! Since this booklet is OOP I was expecting a worn copy. Anyway, I'm very pleased with the lady at Country Yarns and I'm quite certain I'll be ordering from her again in the future.
I cannot wait to start on this project! I'm afraid I won't be able to til after Christmas though. I just have too many other things that need to be done by then...
I have decided to used Caron WW in the one pounders for this project and am thinking of a light pink and dark pink for the squares and either a white or some other contrasting color to attach... What do you guys think?

Hi Donna -
I'm so glad you are happy with the Country Yarns place. I have always had great success with her -- she is a real sweetie pie too. She is always right on time and very efficient with her orders .
Your colors sound very pretty. I think I'd go with white for the 3rd color. Just my opinion !
Olga
Your colors also sound so pretty ! Believe it or not, I don't think I've ever used any color of purple in any of my projects. Maybe I should do that for one of my next ones. Can't wait to see your squares. I bet your daughter will love it .

This made me think of something... for a future CAL, we should do a challenge afghan or something and use colors we hate! it would be a learning experience!

I e-mailed Leisure Arts about possible corrections for square # 19. There are no corrections but she did clarify the directions somewhat. Below is the clarafication.
When working Rnd 3 of the design, you will be working behind the sts you made on Rnd 2 and will be working into the sts and sps on Rnd 1. The sps on Rnd 1 referred to here are the 4 ch-2 sps that were made on Rnd 1. On Rnd 2 you were to work into the Front Loops Only of the sts from Rnd 1, so the Back Loop of these sts are left unworked. When you work Rnd 3, you will be working into the Back Loop of the sts on Rnd 1. You will work a slip st into the next dc (i.e., the next dc after the one you joined to at the end of Rnd 2), work a slip st into the next dc, and then work a slip st into the next ch-2 sp. You will then ch 3 and work (2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) into the same sp that you just worked into. You are then instructed to ch 1 and then work (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) into the next ch-2 sp. You will therefore work the 3 dc, the ch 2, and the 3 dc into the next ch-2 sp you come to from Rnd 1, remembering that you are working behind the sts that were made on Rnd 2 (i.e., the sts on Rnd 2 will end up lying on top of the sts that you are making on Rnd 3). You will repeat this instruction the number of times indicated and will end up working into each of the 4 ch-2 sps on Rnd 1.
Rnd 6 is worked in the same manner as Rnd 3.
Hope this helps!:hook

Hi Everyone, Just make sure there are 23 dc's on each side of the square. If you are going to sc the squares together, it will be easier to join so you won't have to fudge it. Some of my squares are off but I attribute that to the yarn, since I'm using many different colors.
I am going to add a round of granny type stitches around each square and join that way.

Glad you liked the Mad Dog comment. I had fun with that one !
And that is also a good idea for a crochetalong for someday -- you have to choose a color you have NEVER used before . I don't hate certain colors , but there are some that I rarely if EVER use .. Not many yellows , very seldom blue -- I 'm not a big blue fan. And hardly EVER red .. that's probably my least favorite color .
I love green, so almost everything I do has some green somewhere in it !

One of my quilting friends swears that Green is the "other" neutral. And, to be honest, if you treat it as a neutral, it does behave like one most of the time!

This is part of my 35sq ....I finally got it on its way and I'm 5 squares in. Here are a couple of what i have done. I am doing it in lavander and orchid with white edgings. They are my daughters favorite colors and it is for her 27th birthday next month. She has no idea!

Evelyn, Olga, Julie nice colors. Julie congrats on finishing your afghan. It looks really nice. Can't wait to get started on mine. Have to decide what colors and should I keep it for myself. Thinking that way. I along with everyone else give everything (or most) everything I (we) crochet away. My favorite color is red so I know that will be one of them.
