Brown dye

I have tried coffee and tea to dye the wool rovings...and they come out a pretty caramel color. But I am wanting a darker, chocolate brown. How do I do that? Is there a way withought using RIT dye?

i've tried wilton's before... kinda got a burnt orange color. then was told that the 'blue' part of the dye takes longer to adhere and had i left it in longer, it would've turned brown....
haven't tried again, though :shrug

not as simple as coffee or tea but if you can get them the hulls (green part, not the shells they come in at the store) from black walnuts make a good brown dye and this works on both cotton and wool as the hulls contain tannin which is a mordant

Oh yes, black walnut hulls stain...err, dye things very dark brown. (even if you don't want them to)

well you could use acid dyes. Lots of people say orange and grape kool aid mixed together makes brown. I've never tried it but it might work.
