My girlfriend sent me a link to this one: Flying Fingers (http://www.flyingfingers.com/content/)

They come and pick you up in the "yarn bus" and take you to their store about 30 min north of the city. We're going to go visit next time I'm in NJ/NY.

each time i keep going to smiley's.

besides the yarn connection (down the block from my job), the other stores in manhattan, IMHO, seemed to be very snooty when an inquiring customer comes in. Never go on a saturday because the stores are too crowded, yarn is stepped on and people are mean.

if you can make it during the week, or during off peak times, the experience is probably a better one.

I always get friendly service at smiley's, though. my only problem, they're closed on wednesday and sunday.

just take the J train to woodhaven blvd (queens) and it's right downstairs ^_^

How are the yarn stores in brooklyn? I really want to start looking once the weather gets nicer :cloud9

I have one absolute favorite, its in SoHo. Here is the link.

http://http://store.purlsoho.com/purl

The store is called Purl and it has some real neat stuff. Last time I was there I spent way too much $$.

I just recently went there for the first time. It won't be the last either. Great store, great prices too.

I might be vacationing up to NYC for a few days *crosses fingers*, and this thread has been really helpful--now I know some places I want to visit! I have a similar question, though--is there anywhere around there that sells roving? The closest place to my home that does is like 2.5 hours away, and it'd be a pity to go up to NYC and miss out on something really good!

Thanks again for all your store recs!

Don't forget Seaport Yarns,135 William Street, 5th floor, and School Products,1201 Broadway, third floor. Back in Brooklyn we have Roxy's Yarns and Stitch N' Stitch, both on Coney Island Avenue near Avenue J. If you want acrylic,T&D Carpet,3155 Coney Island Avenue, imports yarn from Turkey at bargain prices. There is also Save A Thon Fabrics, near Kings Plaza and on Bridge Street. They have a coupon in the Marketeer this week. Buy 3 skeins of yarn, get the 4th free.

oooh! i took a spinning class at a small placed called
'The Yarnivore' www.yarnivore.com (http://www.yarnivore.com)

but they are closed for the summer now. the owner is a sweet lady, very nice. they have very nice yarns and are just beginning to sell roving.

enjoy!

and i recommend most of the places everyone talked about above
ps yarns-- reasonably priced yarns like lion brand, red heart, sugar and cream, bernat, patons, etc.
smileys has awesome yarn sales-- GET ON THEIR MALING LIST! IT'S A MUST!
(how is smileys when there isnt a sale? reasonable prices?)
seaport yarns is an oddshaped places, but they actually do have tons of nice yarns! people are pretty good there too!

My husband and I were in NYC on Saturday for an anniversary trip, and I went to Purl in SoHo. It was quite a letdown. The shop was tiny--about as big as my bedroom; they had fewer choices than a Michael's store; and, of course, it was all pretty expensive. I expected there to be expensive yarn, but I also thought there might be more moderately priced stuff. (I mean, come on, surely rich people who are new to knitting don't use the most expensive yarns on their first projects!) I am a new crocheter, and I admit, my expectations may have been unrealistic as this is only the second LYS I have visited, but I almost cried when I left the store without buying a single thing! Since I had been to New York before, it was the part of the trip I was looking forward to most. :(

Also, many of you probably read my post about Strings and Strands in Atlanta. In that post, I mentioned I wanted to buy some Colinette Prism yarn to make the Prism Shawl in Interweave Knits Crochet(IKC). Well, they had the Prism yarn at Purl...for $24 a skein! The pattern calls for four skeins! I can't imagine making something for which the yarn costs $100! You all were very kind not to say anything about my ignorance. Of course, you may have just assumed I could afford it. Does anyone know of a good affordable substitute for Colinette Prism?

I should add that I never mentioned I crocheted to the woman who offerred to help me in Purl, but they did have IKC and some crochet books in the store, so they are at least somewhat crochet-friendly.

oh dear...

to katysam...

EVERYTHING in new york is tiny. all the yarn stores we were talking about in this thread are tiny. it's the quality of stuff and the quality of people i look for.

and i just assumed that all local yarn stores are expensive. i only go to them when i know i have enough money to splurge.

otherwise, i go to micheals, ps yarns, and smileys.

and...alright, i'll say it... but i substitute most patterns with yarns that i can afford.
good luck.

Yes. I should have dragged my husband to Queens to buy yarn! :lol

Thanks for your encouragement, ladies (I think you are all ladies.). An ebay store has the Prism for 14.99. That's better!

I also was disappointed with the size of the Purl Soho shop-
The quality of their yarns is way above average and much much better than Smiley's
I think alot of their business now is on the internet-
I am becoming/or have become a yarn snob-

Can anyone describe Smiley's? Do they have more yarn in the store vs the internet? Is it worth a trip to New York?
