Hope I don't get stoned for this, but I frequent WallMart for yarn, and I was wondering if anyone else had noticed the changes in their yarn/craft dept?
The ones around me have just about completely gotten rid of their pattern books and have fazed out some of the more regular yarns for specialty yarns.
Just wondering if anyone else noticed too...

No stoning here! :grouphug
Yep, same changes at my Walmart. Mine still does have pattern books but far fewer than before. They have specialty yarns now, but darned if I can figure out which of the old yarns they got rid of to make way for them. :b

Mine has about 10 pattern books (full sized ones), half of those knitting. The smaller pattern books are still there, but older and haven't changed in nearly three years.
Mine got rid of a good portion of the baby yarns, the boucles, and they had a few of the Patons Denims and Red Heart Grande, all gone. Some of the Red Heart Plush is gone too, but not all. Half maybe. :irked

I did notice at my Walmart that the yarn area is shrinking and the scrapbooking stuff is growing by leaps and bounds. I love some of the new yarns they're carrying though.

Hi. There are three Wal-marts within a seven mile radius from me and I have noticed the same thing. One has no books at all, what they had went on clearance. The others still have some books. As far as yarns, I did also notice more specialty yarns replacing the basic type yarns. They did put yarn on clearance but it was almost hidden (in a cart on the side and I had to keep going to the PriceChecker thing to see what the prices were). Hopefully, the emptier bins will be filled soon. They did have new colors in RedHeart SuperSaver which I couldn't find in Michaels (and Michaels has it on sale this week for $1.42 a skein). Let's just hope it gets better.

Mine too--no craft books at all (they already dropped all their magazines a couple years ago, except for the tabloids at the registers), and WAY less yarn. I'm very disappointed. <img border=0 src="http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/frown.gif" />

Well, glad to see I'm not the only one noticing a difference.
I did find some yarns on clearance. Caron Simply Soft Brites for $1.88, but that was it. I wonder what they did with the rest of the yarns they pulled off the shelves...hmmm...
I was hugely disappointed that they got rid of a lot of their pattern books. I had about 4 that I was wanting to buy but kept putting it off thinking that "Wallmart will always carry them."
~sigh~ Oh well. Guess it's a good excuse to indulge my PAS! hehehe...(as if I need an excuse! :angel )

Jenn,
A lot of times you can find the books you are looking for on eBay. I've bought tons and saved tons of money that way. It's worth a look sometime.

Me, too! I've gotten lots of crochet leaflets on eBay very cheap!

Up until recently all my WM has carried was RH SuperSaver, some baby yarns, Simply Soft, Homespun and Chenille. Now we have a lot of Fun Fir, Boa, Some boucle finally, Jewelbox, Lion Chenille, and even some Chunky weight (can't recall brand).
