:knit I realy really really want to learn to crochet socks. I can not for the life of me figure out how to do it. I have bought patterns and the making of the heel makes no sense to me. Any suggestions??

what books, patterns have u read?
there are 3 problems-imho for beginners
double crochet foundation
heels
and stitches double front post and double back post
i found the instructions in crocheted socks to be easiest to follow-do not try a heel with gusset for your first project or a sock toe up-
i prefer a cuff down sock-
check out socks crochet along page for websites

Joanne gave you some good information already!
Here's the Feet Need Socks Pattern Page (http://www.feetneedsocks.com/patterns.html).
I actually think that toe up socks are easier to learn with -- if only because you can try them on while you work on them and that helps ensure that the socks fit you!
What patterns have you tried?
Are they the sort of patterns where you leave space for the heel and then go back and put the heel in after the rest of the sock is complete (afterthought heel)? Or is the heel made at the same time as the rest of the sock?
If you give us a little more information, we will do our best to help out! Please let us know! :)

I bought a pattern from socks from the Crochet Guild of America website and found it the easiest socks pattern for me to follow and learn to make the sock. It's a cuff down sock and they give you some cute variations.

The only one that I have tried was aone that had a gussetted heel. Which made absolutly no sense to me at all. :shrug I'm a bit of a chicken :hen when trying something new I'm afraid I can't do it so there for I can't, stupid logic I know. I'm bound and determined to make some socks so I'm going to gather up my yarn and try this one of the days and say to myself, I think I can, I think I can, I think I can.:box
I am going to try one of those toe up socks and see if I can do that one.
Thanks guys,

I was clueless on how to do socks until my mom bought me the book "Crocheted Socks (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1564774945/102-0030005-7595309?v=glance&n=283155&s=books&v=glance)" by Janet Rehfeldt. I finished my first pair, and I'm hlaf way thought my second pair.

I made my very first pair of socks back in November, and like the person above me, I used the book Crochet Socks.
I had very little trouble folowing the pattern. I made the pattern that was suggested as a first sock. (I alter the length to what I wanted). My mother in-law loved them so much I had to make her a pair for Christmas. LOL. :lol
I think the most important thing I learned about making socks is, stitch markers are a must!;)
Here are what my socks look like. (http://www.flickr.com/photos/12323159@N00/63534541/in/set-1124522/)

I am very new to crochet and have picked up the Crocheted Socks book in our library. I am going to try the first one called Easy Does It but I am trying to find a tutorial or video instruction for the double crochet foundation stitch. The illustrations are a bit confusing for me as I am learning to read them. Does anyone have a suggestion where I can find a video stream for this?
Thanks in advance...

The crochet pattern I use for my socks is "Socks in Shoes" pattern from Crochet Me. I've not used any other sock pattern since. It's all single crochet, no front or back posts...just simple ribbing for the cuff, and the heel is worked in the round with decreases as needed and worked separately.
I've never tried toe up socks only because I haven't found a toe up sock pattern that I like.
With the 'Socks in Shoes' concept, I even made Christmas stockings of course using thicker yarn and bigger hook.

Funny, I just picked up this same book in the library and I don't understand the double crochet foundation either. I have been looking for a video also. Good luck to both of us. I wonder if it is easier to just buy socks!

Try this pattern (http://www.graftonfibers.com/socks.htm). I think it's the easiest one in the world. :) Remember a sock is nothing but a tube with an opening for the heel. :think Once that is understood, then the mechanics of making the sock makes sense. After that one can try different heels, ribbing around the top, more length, etc. I also believe toe up socks are the easiest to make to fit. I know lots of other people have had success with making them cuff down, but unless I'm making them for charity, they are useless.... :eek IOW, I can't make them to fit a specific individual if I make them from the cuff down.:shrug
