"Magic Square?"

I saw a book on Annie's Attic called "Learn to Crochet Easy Magic Squares." (You can see the book at http://www.anniesattic.com/detail.html?prod_id=16230 )

Can anyone tell me more about this technique?

Hi, A Magic Square is a this: Crochet a chain, then sc into the 2nd ch from the hook, and in each chain, then working along the opposite side of the chain, sc in each remainig chain loop. now sc in each stitch, around and around until you get a rectangle shaped piece that if you fold on the diagonal, will give you a square. Magic! Sew up thr diagonal seam and you are done, Here is a pattern:

How does this technique translate into an afghan? It seems that the techinique used in the book at Annie's Attic might be something else.

Ok, so when you finish you have a double thickness with a diagonal opening in the front? I don't think that would work for an afghan. Maybe this is a different technique?

I didn't want to buy the book until I had an idea of what it was :P

Hi, If you look closely at the photos on the cover of the AA book, you will see that the pillow is a magic square. There is also a red item that is on the left hand side that is a magic square. The diagonal is on the front, but you can turn it over for the smooth side.
As far as afghans go, perhaps she made it with a sport yarn to make it less weighty.

Make a small sample with a starting chain of 9,

Ch 9, sc in 2nd ch from the hook, and in each rem ch. Working on opp side, sc in each ch---you will have 8 sc on one side and 8 sc on the other for a total of 16.

Now sc in each sc, for a few rounds, test to see if it makes a square by pulling the open on a diagonal. Works the rounds until it pulls square.

Well that is weird! I don't think I want an afghan that is double thickness. It would take double the time!

I'm sure you could do it with double crochet to make it a bit less dense.
