I saw this as a thread from a while back...how exactly does one do a waffle weave? I've googled it, but am coming up empty...not sure I want to spend $$$ on a book for one stitch <g>...PAM

First of all, you need a hook much bigger than you think. For worsted weight you need a L or M.
The stitch pattern is made entirely of SC. You know how when you work in only the front loop how there is a ridge made on the back side of the piece from the back loop you didn't use? You will be working in only the front loops BUT you will pick up that back loop too but you will pick it up from the previous row. Ok, so here is how you make the stitch. You come up from under that ridge made from the previous row and then catch the front loop of the row you are working on. YO and finish doing a SC. When you turn you will see a new ridge of all those back loops you didn't pick up when you only picked up the front loop. You do it all over again. You insert the hook from the bottom to the top catching that back loop you didn't use from the previous row and up through the front loop of the row you are working on.
This makes a waffle weave looking fabric that is very cushiony and stretchy. It uses more yarn but it has air pockets in it just like fabric waffle weave which makes it a good insulator.
The hardest row to do is the 2nd row because.....
You start by making your chain (how every long you want). You SC all the way across and turn. Here is where it gets tricky. For this 2nd row you have to pick up another loop from the chain and then the front loop of the row you just worked. YO and complete the SC. When you turn this row you will see the ridge of stitches fro mwhere you only used the front loops. The back loops that where unused make that ridge. Then you can stick the hook up through the loop from the previous row, then the front loop from the row you are working on. The first two rows are the hardest. After that the ridge is very visible and it is a very easy stitch.
Does that make any sense at all?

Is there a possibility of getting a picture of this, or a link where one might be available? It's kind of hard to imagine it without that visual! It sounds intriguing...

Well, I guess I could crochet up a swatch and take a couple of pix making the stitch. I have never done that before. It might be fun! Give me a little bit. I have a class this morning and I will be home at about 11:30 am. The only problem I have is the software I use (Kodak) will not let you shrink pictures unless you use THEIR software to EMAIL someone. If I save the picture to my harddrive it is always way too big and I can't shrink it. I will try and turn the resolution down on the camera to see if it will reduce the pixels enough that I can get a pix on the message board.

I can't find my digital camera! We are selling our house so we have packed up quite a bit of stuff but I can't imagine that I packed my camera. I found my 35mm but not the digital.
As soon as I find it I will take a picture (I already crocheted up a swatch). What a pain!

Yes, it does! I tried it out on some scraps and it's quite easy actually. It's very similar to Helena's Potholder Stitch (http://Helena%27s%20Potholder%20Stitch) except that you use the front loop and work from the bottom to the top instead of the top to the bottom.
I'm in the market for some very warm mittens. I wonder how it would work out?:think

It sounds intriguing...Dee Stanziano has a description of the waffle weave technique and a photo of it on her Types & Techniques of Crochet (http://members.aol.com/crochetwithdee/typesof.html) page. Does that help?

Is it just my computer being wonky again, or something I'm missing? The list on that page stops at "Rope", couldn't find a link to go to a next page... :(
Thanks for the link, though - I've definitely bookmarked it! :hook

Sounds like your computer didn't load the whole page - there is more content below that you're missing. Maybe if you go back and press the reload or refresh button?

Well, after numerous reload clicks, including setting my proxie to bypass, I am still hanging by a Rope (sorry, totally uncalled for, I know - just couldn't resist!).
I'm going to try my last-ditch effort and fire up the hated IE, see if I can get it there. BRB...
I'm back. ::sigh:: it works on IE. Seeing as how the page is hosted on aol, I really shouldn't be surprised. I think I will save a copy of that last section to an email for future reference, since I really don't like using IE unless my back's against the wall (like this time). Thanks for the reference, though, it looks to be a valuable one.

It was the same for me on Firefox.:( I had to use Konqueror, another browser, and then I finally saw it. If somebody still can't see the picture, it's here (http://members.aol.com/crochetwithdee/images/waffle.jpg). Unfortunately, if you can't see it using your current browser, there's no link to that specific entry.
