View Full Version : needle felting

Has anyone made a teddybear with needle felting? I first saw these adorable bears over a year ago in a Teddy bear Magazine. But I have been too busy (sewing for my daughter's wedding, Christmas, etc) to make one. Now I am going to take a stab (lol) at it.:rotfl

Bear, no, but I have needle-felted a cat (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v393/monkeemaven/janblog/jan12a.jpg).
(Well, I never said I was good....)
Needle Felting is Magick. Whether it be black magic or bland magic I haven't yet discerned.

I've seen patterns for sale on eBay. Just search for needle felted teddy bears. The patterns are expensive though. I might break down and buy a kit. My sister sent me some rovings and felting needles, so I will try it soon. They also use a high density foam pad, I assume so that you don't bleed to death from the holes in your fingers.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v478/SamplerLady/mmouseplus.gifYou can use a folded towel for a pad, too. You will get a finger once and awhile and it does hurt. Generally, like most accidents it happens from not paying attention! ;)

You can also needle felt with wool yarn. Roll it into a ball, secure the end and felt away. Verigated wool yarns make great balls, bases for toys, etc. You can also needle felt motifs to a fulled bag or slippers. It's a great way of attaching wool to wool.... :D

Thanks for the info. I just purchased a kit for felting teddybears. I already have rovings so I can't wait to try it.

I ordered the kit off of eBay. Just type in "needle felted bears." My sister sent me some rovings and felting needles so I had a go last night. It is TOO MUCH FUN!!! I couldn't put it down, so I didn't get to bed until 2:00 a.m. I pricked my fingers a few times OUCH. But it is so much fun. I can't wait to get proper instructions, and dye some of the wool,

Did you find the things on eBay? I purchased the lavender bear with pattern book. I think it was $19.

he he he he - actually, typing in teddy bear also brought up all the little thread bear things....
so this (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=8153251594&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT) is what i ended up getting :loco

This is what I bought: felt bears (http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=3904&item=5551667686&rd=1)
I LOVE the crocheted thread bears, but I have a few patterns already for them from a Teddy Bear and Friends mag.

Aaahhh, you caught the bug. Let me know when your kit comes. I ordered mine just the other day. We can see how each other is doing. My husband says I should wear metal gloves...do they make such a thing? Actually a thimble on a few of my fingers would do the trick. It was only when I got poking too quickly that I stabbed myself.:ducky :ducky :ducky

Oh Rebecca! I forgot all about those thread bear patterns! I remember seening those when I first started to crochet and did not know how to use thread. Now that I do I want one soooo bad! I like Margot (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=5548288187&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT) the best! :)

Crochetdiva- that is the cutest bear and I cannot wait to see it finished!

:bounce Hi Heather, you should join us. I am also making a miniature bear out of some thin chenille I "reclaimed". I want to make a thread bear too. Actually threadbears are one of the things that attracted me to crocheting...and I haven't even made one yet.
I have already finished the head on the felted bear (not the one from ebay) I might post a pic of my progress.

Well actually this past weekend I thought I would make a thread bear out of a pattern I make 8" bears. She has a head, body and two legs right now. I love the size of her but she is rounder than I like my bears, that is why I like the ebay ones. I have not worked on her this week, but hope to finish her this weekend. I even thought about making her a poncho too!

I will post pics when I finish her, here is a pic of the 8" bear (http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/heather_truelove/detail?.dir=a467&.dnm=7920.jpg&.src=ph).

crochetdiva
January 19, 2005, 03:13 PM
What a great idea making a poncho for the thread bear. It would be so CUTE! Now I HAVE to make a tiny thread bear out of some pink mercerized cotton I just got!

truelove730
January 19, 2005, 03:21 PM
Yeah she is round and fluffy. I actually got her from a Annie's Attic pattern book (can't find pic, most not carry it anymore). The bear in the book is 16" tall and can hold a blanket. I took a few rows off and used a smaller hook and yarn.

Oh no, you ladies have started a bad thing here. I just ordered the duck kit and the lavendar/lilac bear kit from livingfelt. I cannot wait for them to get here so I can get started. This is so bad! :yes

Laura

January 19, 2005, 05:21 PM
Welcome Laura. :bounce The duck is adorable. Once a person learns to do it I guess the possibilities are endless. Originally when I wanted to do this I had intended on crocheting victorian dresses and making a felted bear to fit the clothes. I have since purchased the calendar bed doll patterns for 11 1/2 inch dolls. Now I just have to make the bear.
But now I want to make little ponchos like Heather said.

Ok, now I feel guilty for starting all this. Well, just a little.:bad
I am going to work on the bear I am making (my own design) on the weekend and hope to have pics to post by Monday. I don't know how to connect the parts if they are going to be jointed. So I might just take pics of the parts.

There are some incredible needle felters out there!!!I love looking at all their work.

rebeccav
January 21, 2005, 01:07 PM
didn't you buy a kit that gave instructions for attaching???

crochetdiva
January 21, 2005, 03:08 PM
Yep, the lavender bear pattern is supposed to be jointed, and comes with dental floss to attach the parts. I can't quite figure out how to do it without instructions. I have sewn jointed bears before, but they had cotter pins. It will be interesting to see the proper instructions.
You will probably get the kit before I do, since I live out of the country.

Not to worry tho, cos I worked on my own design last night and it is coming along great. I have the head, body, and one leg finished. I will post pics later. It is so much fun it should be illegal.:rotfl
I have three new wounds....seriously tho, they only hurt for a second, but you have to be careful not to bleed on the wool. I can't wait to see all of your bears. And I will keep my :fc for you Rebecca.

Seriously though, the first (ladybug) and the last (teddy bear) links were the best examples of how to needle felt that I've seen so far. Until I saw those, I didn't quite understand how you get from point A to point B

Yes, Birthdays are good reasons to spoil yourself!!!

Laura- needles, scissors, other sharp things are fine in checked luggage because you can't get to them to use as weapons. Heck, you can even put unloaded guns in checked luggage (need special paperwork though!)

Okay, I have put it off long enough. Tonight I will join my ballerina bear. I don't know why I am dreading it.
I just got my kit yesterday. I didn't order Lavendar, like I thought I did. I ordered Candy. It's the one that donates a dollar per kit to the Cancer Society.
I have been so in awe of Holly's creations. They are fabulous! Way to go girl!!!:cheer2 :cheer 2:cheer2

Heather,
My AC Moore had felting needles. I haven't seen them at other craft stores though. I haven't seen roving/loose wool at any craft store.

There are kits and individual supplies on Ebay plus if you look back in this thread, there should be some links to other online sellers.

February 2, 2005, 02:35 PM
Rebecca,
My AC Moore has the needles as well, I am going tonight to pick up an extra set for myself, and I was planning on sending you a second hat this week, would you like me to pick up a set of them for you? Drop me a line and let me know.

Laura

HollyM
February 2, 2005, 02:36 PM
Rebecca,
I could pick some up for you on my way home from school tonight.

They had 3 packs of 36 gauge needles for $6
and then they had a wooden needle handle w/ 3 36g needles for $14.

You might want to take a look around online though. The stuff I'm reading now looks like having a variety of needle sizes helps to get the results you want. There is something called a 38 gauge star point needle that is supposed to have more barbs so it felts faster.

Now that's not to say I mind getting them, I don't at all!!!!
Just want to make sure you are getting what you want

I don't leave for school until 5 (eastern) so let me know.
I'm stuck in the house all day because boyo is still sick.

Hmph..boyo looking for food....he can wait a minute Anyway, it's not that the 36g are wrong, but if you were going to order stuff anyway, it looks like there are cheaper ones out there. I think we need our own blog (lol). I am almost finished puttin my ballerina bear together. What is taking so long you may ask? Well, I am having trouble getting any free time lately. But I will finish it tonite, I promise, and post pics tomorrow.
Rebecca, tell them you will leave them negative feedback if they don't hurry up and send it. That is horrible (and the kind of thing that usually happens to me). I usually get a quick response if the other party thinks they might get neg feedback. Good luck! I would send you needles if I thought you'd get them any sooner from up here.
Good luck!

Yahoo, I am done. I just have to make the tutu tomorrow and it is complete. Now I know why I put off finishing it....cos I have to send it away when it is done, and I don't want to part with it. Oh well, there will be others no doubt.

she was a little shy at first... but then met Gretchen (she came to my family all the way from Germany!). they bonded immediately and haven't left each other's side for a moment.

Yayyyy!!!
Get playing! I can't wait to see what you come up with!

As far as feedback, I think a neutral is in order w/ an explanation they did finally make it right. If they had sent it fed ex after the *first* phone call about the missing items, I'd give them a positive. It took you what...3 calls? Did they at least give you some extra goodies??

just wanted to let you all know, i received an email from the main lady at livingfelt.com today and she is going to send me a 'compensation package' for the trouble i had with my first order......
i'll let you all know what it is when it comes in

That is nice to hear Rebecca. Customer service and P.R. are essential to a company's success. Anyone can make a mistake, but a good company leave you feeling good about them. What are you having trouble with on the bear?
