View Full Version : Pattern for Cable purse w/ bangle handles

November 18, 2005, 02:53 PM
A friend of mine saw some (expensive) knit purses online and asked if I could make one for her, only larger. This is my version of this purse
http://www.margaretnicole.com/banglebags/
I used clear handles, wood ones are nearly impossible to find. Next time I think I will make it a bit wider, but this was the specifications that my friend wanted.

I know it has taken me forever to post this pattern. The general cable stitch pattern was taken from a crochet book, so this is verbatim, you are basically doing raised stitches and working through the front posts. You can make as wide as you like by adding more stitches. I hope this helps. I would have liked to have made some tutorial photos, but I am falling so far behind in my Christmas crocheting that I haven't had time. You will make a rectangle, fold it in half and attach it to each hoop with a slip stitch. Turn it inside out and either sl stitch the seams or use a tapestry needle. I don't think it's necessary to line it unless you chose to.
Ch. 48 (multiple of 7 plus 6)
1.Right Side Row. Hdc in third ch from hook and in each remaining ch. Ch.1, turn.
2.And ALL Wrong Side Rows. Sc in each stitch across. Ch.2, turn.
3. *Work hdc in 4 sc, work post dc as follows: yo, insert hook right to left under post of hdc below next sc, draw up loop, (yo and draw through 2 loops) twice to complete dc. Skp sc behind post dc, work hdc in next sc, work post dc in hdc below next sc*, skip sc behind post dc; repeat from * to * across, ending with hdc in last 4 sc. Ch 1, turn.
4.Wrong side row, repeat row 2.
5. *Hdc in 4 sc, skip first post dc, and work post dc on second post dc. Ch. 1, now work post dc around the skipped post dc (crossover made, skip the 3 sc behind crossover *; repeat from *to* across, ending with hdc in last 4 sc.
6.Wrong side row, repeat row 2.
7.* Hdc in 4 sc, work post dc in post dc below next sc (always skip sc behind each post dc), hdc in next sc, post dc in post dc below next sc*. Repeat from * to * ending with hdc in last 4 sc. Ch 1, turn. Repeat Rows 2 through 7 for pattern.

The purse is beautiful. Did you have a pattern, or did you just wing it? If you just winged it, can you say generally what your methodology was? I'm curious because I actually have some wooden bangles taking up space in my jewelry box, and they would be perfect for this.
Great job! :cheer

Pretty easy method. I will be sure to post it here later, I have it written down at home. You just basically make a long rectangle, fold it over, sc the side seams and attach it to the handles.

Fabulous purse!
I went to Michael's and found the purse handles. Our Michael's has clear and wooden and bamboo handles. I think I've even heard of some people using the plastic lids from coffee cans and butter tubs. (They wrap the yarn all the way around the plastic.)
I love the cable look. I just got a couple books "From Knit to Crochet" and "From Needle to Hook" that gives equivalent stitch patterns and so I'm going to be looking through that for the different cables. I think purses and totes are always wonderful Christmas gifts.

Pretty easy method. I will be sure to post it here later, I have it written down at home. You just basically make a long rectangle, fold it over, sc the side seams and attach it to the handles.
So true. Very easy to do with this method. I tried this using a simple stitch that I got from the Encyclopedia of Crochet. I'll try the cable stitch next. My quick little bag is on my blog: http://mscrocheter.blogspot.com/2005/11/crocheted-hand-bag.html
Donna thanks so much for the idea.

Beautiful! The only thing holding me back has been the lack of purse handles which I am going to go and get today, I think, since I now have some Michael's coupons. I have a couple of great books called "From Knit to Crochet" and "From Needle to Hook" and the both have some nice "cable" stitches. I also have several stitch encyclopedias, so I'm confident I can find one I like.
What kind of yarn did you use?

I used Sirdar Milano, it's microfibre and nylon. According to our UK yarns I'd say it was inbetween double knitting and aran weight.

Has anyone starred this bag? I cannot get mine to turn out right. On the 3rd row I'm supoosed to end with 4 hdc but i ended up with 8. Also should I have 5 cablestitch rows?
Thanks
Mom w/a Motif
November 30, 2005, 02:57 PM
Hi Miki, I have started this bag. I don't know if this will be more confusing, or if it will help. You should have three hdc, (besides first ch-3). Then, in the next st, you will go two rows below, and do a post dc as noted. I already have mine in progress, but maybe it will help to see what I am talking about.
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y12/TPryst/th_c85ec65b.jpg (http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y12/TPryst/c85ec65b.jpg) http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y12/TPryst/th_16d58d33.jpg
Then, you skip the sc behind the stitch you just made. Then, do a hdc in next stitch, then a post dc just like that in the next stitch two rows below.
I have six rows of cable 'rows'. Hope it helps.

Do you mean all together or at the end of the row? I think you should have 45? stitches all together, and only 4 hdc at the end of the row. You're welcome. ;)

Wow, I feel like maybe I should do another so I can help with any questions. Thanks TINA for putting up those fabulous photos. I am going to try one a little wider this time. I used two strands of yarn held together throughout and like the bulkiness of the purse, it seems as though I won't have to line it. I can't wait to see photos of some of the finished purses.

I have been looking everywhere for bangles and bought some more 'bamboo' ones tonight. :cheer I already have one person (besides myself :lol ) that wants me to make them one of these-- I'm afraid to show it to anyone else, I'll have to make one for everyone! My mom was just over, I showed her the $200 version, and then I showed her yours, Donna, and she said 'I like that one better anyway!' (I said, 'Me, too!') ;) Thanks again Donna for sharing this awesome pattern!

Should all the remaining rows of post dc be crossovers from row 5 and on?
Also, I am using 2 strands of red heart, I too would not like to line it, and an N hook, but it seems way too bulky and am having a hard time working with it. Any suggestions?

December 1, 2005, 09:03 AM
I was wondering the same thing. My pattern goes straight/cross/straight-straight/cross/straight... with rows of sc in between. It's hard to see in the original pics if that is the pattern.
I am using kool-wool-it's pretty thick yarn and an L hook-it seems where the crosses are there is a "hole" through the fabric (more visible on the wrong side). I'm going to need to line it. I also started the first cable on the fourth original hdc and the whole thing wasn't lining up. I'm learning a lot on this project!
LoriB
(edited to add) - I started picking up a loop from the sc below the row where the cross was done-on the next wrong side sc to fill in the hole it was creating.
(edited again to add) - I started to make my cables (the post dc's) into post tc's. The treble gives the cable a little more "umph" by popping off the fabric a bit more. I also started to repeat from row 4-7 instead of 2-7. It gives more of a twist-so it goes straight/cross/straight/cross/straight/cross....with a row of sc in between. I hope I'm not confusing anyone. I will try to take a picture tonight.

I don't know, not being the designer, I was wondering that too... I think maybe it should be every other row? Because I have been following the pattern rows 2-7, and it seems like it is too 'long' of a 'cable'. See what I mean?

Does that look 'right'? :think I might try to do one row straight then one crossover, know what I mean? And see how it looks compared to Donna's purse... Here it is just doing rows 2-5:

I think I do like the way it looked before, with rows 2-7. Thanks Donna. :)

It looks right to me. The cables are sort of long on my purse too. I used a size J hook with two strands of yarn, so my stitches are a bit taught.

I like your longer version better than those "expensive" ones!
The Hobby Lobby near me has several different types of handles like that, so you might try them if there's one near you (or maybe try their website).
Hope that helps...

Love your bag Donna!! I just made on this week a little narrower in blue, one strand ww, with an I hook. It definitley needs to be lined though! Here it is.
http://flyinghooks.blogspot.com/2006/03/fo-cable-purse.html
I found the pattern at your blog and not here so I didn't know about the 2 strands to make it bulkier etc. Oh well live and learn. I think I'm going to make another one, wider, in another color using 2 strands!
Thanks again for sharing your talent!

I'm trying my first one now in gray, just an I hook and one strand, but so far it's not too hard. Now I'm going to be scouting the fleamarket for plastic bangles.
I frogged it and redid it w/ 2 strands and a K hook, but honestly, I wasn't impressed, but I'm totally sure it was my technique not the pattern. Also, I bought the wrong kind of handles, because I was just in a hurry to finish it, so my handles were the U kind with just a slot on each side to sew, and so it didn't hang right. I ended up frogging that one too, and found the tunisian cable stitch on http://www.bellaonline.org/articles/art4183.asp
I modified the stitch slightly by switching between 4 stitches, not 3, and by doing 3 rows of regular stitch between crossovers, not 2. It made it less bunchy, I thought.
I did a salmon colored one in that stitch with 3 cables across, and it turned out great. A little small, but I'm doing another one now with one more cable to make it wider, and so far in my short crocheting career, this is my favorite stitch! I need to develop my film and post the picture, because it is just too cute.

I'm so glad I found this pattern post the other day. This is an awesome idea!!!
It inspired me to create a wide, shallow purse with five cables, each cable made over six stitches. I'm using the six-stitch cable method illustrated in this vest pattern: http://www.crochetme.com/Apr_May_2005/patt_vest.html
The purse will be made of Simply Soft in plum wine with a fat pink ribbon.

"I used clear handles, wood ones are nearly impossible to find. Next time I think I will make it a bit wider, but this was the specifications that my friend wanted."
Jo-ann's has wooden handles you can find online, which look real perty with earthy collors like beige and dark green, but those clear handles are fun for bright colors! beautiful pattern I love cables!

I know this is a bit late, but I'm almost done with this project, and I just need a little guidance on how to finish it up. I've finished with all the rows necessary (about 5 iterations of rows 2 - 7), but all it says is to "slip stitch" the handles....how exactly do I do that? I still have the yarn connected and haven't finished off anything...where do I go from here?
And have you guys been folding it "hamburger" style or "hot dog" style to get the final purse shape? If I fold it "hamburger" style, only one end is actually open...but I want the purse top to be able to open up a little more (so, in other words, I don't want to sew the sides ALL the way to the top, so I can leave some extra room). How do I get around this, or is this already part of the pattern?
Thanks for your help in advance!

I am almost done with one using Patons SWS wool/soy yarn...I did not double the yarn and I am sorry but the pattern of the stripes looks great. I will post a pic after I buy handles and figure how to attach it...
For the person on the previous post: You fold the bag in half like a hamburger, not a hot dog and finish it off before you attach the handles with slip stitch...then the top is open completely attached to the handles and easy to open...look again at post #1 to see the completed bag...

I'm in the process of making this purse for a Christmas gift. It will be given to my husband's aunt that will be here for the holidays.
The pattern is pretty easy for me. After I did the first 7 rows, I had it memorized. I have the rectangle about 3/4 of the way finished now.
My question to anyone is......what is the easiest way to line the purse with fabric? I've never done that before, and I really hate hand sewing. Any and all ideas and/or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

My question to anyone is......what is the easiest way to line the purse with fabric? I've never done that before, and I really hate hand sewing. Any and all ideas and/or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I have taken my purse, before attaching handles, placed it on top of lining fabric (I use cotton). I cut the fabric about 1/2 wider than the purse. I do sew pockets on one side with a sewing maching, then I sew the sides up to the opening with a sewing machine, but I have to sew the lining in by hand. I just whip stitch around the top edge of the purse and then attach handles. Does that make sense? :think

Thank you for answering my question Michelle. I understood what you said, but now I have another question for you. Once you hand stitch the fabric to the crocheted piece, where do you actually put the thread? Through the back loop of a stitch? That part I'm confused on.
BTW, I live in Florida as well.

BTW, I live in Florida as well. I use the same color as my yarn and just stick it through the yarn. I do very tiny stitches to make sure it stay put. :D You could put it behind the back loop of a stitch. With the handles, the only way I could to it is to stitch all the way through both layers of yarn. I haven't been able to see the stitch after attaching the handles.
I live in NE Florida. :D

I tried to make this purse using Angle Hair yarn from Joann's Fabric, but I couldn't see the cable stitch and didn't continue the pattern. There is no sense in making the purse if you can't see the pretty cable stitch. I will do another purse and then this one in a regular yarn.
I had no problem doing the pattern. I did notice that the chain 2 stitch needs to count as the first stitch.
Where it says:
2.And ALL Wrong Side Rows. Sc in each stitch across. Ch.2, turn.
3. *Work hdc in 4 sc, ... The chain 2 should count as the first stitch of the next row. Should read, Ch 2, turn. Work hdc in 3 sc. Or your cable stitches will be off. :D
Hope that helps some one.

I don't understand how you attach the crocheted rectangle to the handles. :think Can somebody please explain this to me? I'd love to make this for my mother for Christmas. Sew the sides up to where you want the opening. I haven't made mine yet, so I can't tell you the measurements. Gather the open end and fold through the rings and sew the top edge to the inside of the purse. This is done after lining. Does this make sense?
I bought some ugly green lime colored yarn, that will be purfect for this pattern. The fuzzy yarn I got before would not show the cable. I also bought Eye-lash yarn to trim the top. This is for a teenager, not my colors at all. :lol For the lining I bought bright pink fabric with lime green flowers. I'll post a picture when I am done. I'll be working on this tonight. :cheer
My biggest problem is find handles. :angry I can most anything, but what I need. I really didn't want to order them, but it looks like I will have to.

I thought I would share a picture of how my purse turned out. It was a Christmas gift for my husband's aunt last year. She loved it and I was happy with the way it turned out.
After I got home with the ribbon I bought, I realized it wasn't what I wanted, but I used it anyways.
The purse was lined with a very pretty grey and soft pink paisley print. Forgot to take a picture of the inside so it could be seen.
Don't mind my youngest son's hand. He was nice enough to hold the purse up so I could take a picture of it.

Just a quick question for anyone that has made this purse...I'm having trouble keeping my edges straight. Any suggestions? And also do you count the turning row as the first st in that row..or the last st in the row...or is it not included in your count? Thanks for any help!

January 18, 2008, 06:43 PM
HDC isn't the funnest to work with. If I remember, I chained 2 for the HDC but didn't count it as a stitch, then just HDC in the first st. I do this a lot with HDC. This may cause the edges not to be perfectly straight, but when I sew it together (or do an edging) then it doesn't matter too much.

I just started making this purse and I have frogged it 3 times now (my fault, I'm sure) But on this step:
5. *Hdc in 4 sc, skip first post dc, and work post dc on second post dc. Ch. 1, now work post dc around the skipped post dc (crossover made, skip the 3 sc behind crossover *; repeat from *to* across, ending with hdc in last 4 sc.
After I skip the 3sc behind the crossover, I'm suppose to hdc in the next 4....? If I do that, then I am right over the 4th post, so I don't think my next crossover is going to work out correctly.....:think This time around I have been making sure my stich count is correct, and it is. I'm also counting my ch 2 as my first hdc. Thanks to anyone that can help!

I think using a cord as the handle can also transform it into a nice shoulder bag

My edges weren't exactly straight when I did mine too. I could only pull them as I go along. However, when u sew up the edges right sides together, and turn the final product inside out, the uneveness is hardly noticeable :)
