felted bowls

This whole idea of felting bowls really excited me.
I wanted to try it right from the start.
I've never made a bowl, or hat before.
But I learned to do a spiral from crocheting small bears I learned from a fabulous article on a woman who makes them for children in hospitals.

ANYWAY, :blah , :lol

I made this attempt using the tapestry wool I still have gobs of. It's still only crocheted. I haven't thrown it into the machine yet.

I read through the pages that omeone had asked about adding beads. I immediately thought, http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v234/darkharper/yes.gif what a great idea! I had these wooden colored beads just wasting away in my poor stash closet, (heehee), and thought of them. The width was perfect because I used a size G hook, (as in "Gee, I'm crazy!"), and it fits through perfectly.

inside. There's many threads sticking out because of the many tapestry thread changes. I think this project is just ideal for this because, once the wool shrinks, :xfin , whatever fuzzy strings are left can be easily trimmed.

I always take too many pics, sigh.

I'm nervous about the beads. They do look "sealed" with a shiny coating like a shellac. Hope they stay stained.

You should smell my house after I was burn-testing to see if it melted or smouldered. :lol After a while, the fumes get to you despite having the windows open. You don't really care at that point what's happening to the thread. I think you are more :spin in a haze of toxic air, Ha!!! :D

I'm nervous what shape this will shrink down to. I used only a single crochet this time unlike the double crochet that I did for the blanket. I know you've all said to keep it loose. Wool likes to move about and shift into place. But trying to make a bowl, I thought it should be as solid as I could make it straight from the start. I don't know if this was a mistake or not. We'll see....

I have to go mow the lawn, (Ugh! real life calling me!!!!!!:eek ), then I plan to do some wash and toss it in (enclosed in a pillowcase).

I'll check back here first, though, to see if you all have any suggestions or comments to make before it takes "the plunge".

I wonder if she uses something to stiffen up the bowls and things. Or else her work must be done extremely tightly to keep it rigid!

I know exactly what she means by saying that the patterns all spiral upwards. But her work is so beautiful, who cares if you can't make pefectly straight lines upwards! \

I'm just so amazed at her work!

Well, an update on my bowl. (I'm dubbing it "Old Slouchy" :lol ) is that, after washing it four times and using a big ceramic popcorn bowl as a mold to stretch it over and mold it to shape as it dries, it still refused to stiffen enough to be called a bowl.

"Slouchy" :) is now drying after I sprayed it with some of the chochet stiffening starch. (I know, I know. How disappointing.) Well, I only coated it lightly. I did the outside and now am waiting for the inside to dry. Then I'll snap some pics and show you all. (If any of you are still interested. :P ).

I'm really excited because I just got back from Goodwill today and I bought a huge box of yarn. 40 skeins of beautiful fall color yarns. $9.99 I HAD to get it!!!
And one has a label of an afghan that I just think is SO FUNKY and retro I may have to try and make it.

She may have had more experience, studied some design. (Meet the new, positive me!) I'm kidding. Her site is truly beautiful, it elevates crochet to the level of art. I keep returning to it for inspiration.

Yes, I've seen the hooks, they are beautiful. I'd love to have a collection of them. Those with the handles would be very useful for tapestry crochet.

I was reading that with cotton yarn it's good to use a thread . I think it was in reference to making bags. One would think it would not work for felting. (or would it? maybe I'll try it w. a swatch) Maybe that would help w. stiffness.

There. I hope you get the picture. :D I like how the colors sort of blend together. That looks neat.

The beads held up perfectly. No problems with them. Even through 4 washes.

The only problem is with the stiffness. If you just pushed on the sides it will collapse. I just stood it up nice for the shots.
I guess it will just have to be a floppy basket of some kind. :lol

how about trying to find one of those clear plastic liners to put inside.. that way it will hold its shape a little better and contain what you want to put in..and not get anything on your bowl anyway ...just a thought..

What would happen if you used some clear coating on the inside?

I could see that working providing you found some proper support for the outside of it while you were doing it.

By the way I love your bowl the way it is. It could be a very pretty pot cover perhaps for a special plant (one more reason to use a liner or coating on the inside.

There are some instructions here on how to make a basket stiffer. This one uses shellac to coat it. It may not be the look you are after, though.

I think it turned out really nice. That would be very pretty for a chips bowl for an outdoor party. You would have line it to keep in from getting dirty. Or a casserole dish holder. Very nice I have been doing bags -so guess may have to try a bowl :)
