Okay, I have NEVER heard of slip chain. I tried looking it up online, with no help at all! I can only find it mentioned on about three patterns online. I am wracking my brain over here. What is this elusive stitch? :think I'm not even sure I'm calling it the right thing. It might just be "slip" with the next instruction telling you it's in the chain.. I have no idea. All I know is that it's not straight ol' slip stitch, otherwise it would say that. lol

Here's the pattern (http://www.crochetmemories.com/archive/Snowflake.html).

It's in Round 3:

Rnd 3) Sl st in next sp; (ch 3, dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in same sp, slip ch 8 from rnd 2 through ch 8 from rnd 1, (3 sc) in top of ch 8 sp; * (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next ch 3 sp, slip ch 8 from rnd 2 through ch 8 from rnd 1, (3 sc) in top of ch 8 sp; rep from * around; join with a sl st to 3rd ch of beg ch 3: 18 sc/6 ch 2-sps/24 dc.

I am showing you a pic of what I have up until what's bolded, to make it easier to understand:

** NOTE: I just caught a mistake of mine that has nothing to do with my question, but just in case you're wondering, yes, there's supposed to be one more dc in the space where my last dc was made.

and then the same thing up close:

What the heck am I supposed to be doing?? I tried to figure it out from the picture along with the pattern, but nope, that just confused me more. I thought perhaps it meant basically to go through each ch from each rnd, slip stitching the chains together. But that seems wrong because the two chain 8 rows are separated by about a chain, so it seems like there'd be weird little bumps where you did your first and last slip stitch together. Also, the thing that gets me is that the next thing you're supposed to do, after the slip ch 8 from rnd 2 through ch 8 from rnd 1, is (3 sc) in top of ch 8 sp. If you did what I was thinking the slip chain would be, you'd be at the end of the ch 8 and thus wouldn't be able to do 3 sc in the top of the space.

So what am I supposed to be doing?? I am completely baffled.

It appears that you will reach through the loop created by the ch 8 from the first round (with your crochet hook or just your thumb and forefinger) and pull the ch 8 from round 2 through it. You would then make 3 sc in the little space created by pulling that loop through the other loop. It's sort of like picking up a dropped stitch in knitting.

Oh crikey, THAT is what I'm supposed to do??!! Seriously, I would never have figured that out in a million years. Of course, not that I just tried it, I can see that what I'm doing looks like it matches the picture. You'd think they'd use a word other than "slip".. like "pull through" or SOMEthing. :lol Mudpie, if you were here right now I would hug you! THANK YOU for solving my mystery! :hug :yay

Yikes! I am glad someone could explain that one! I would of read it the same way too. The pattern should say something like "slip THE chain 8 section through.." Anything that would break up that phrase, so it would change from a crochet stitch action (slip chaining something) to slipping an section 8 chains long through..
I read a lot and like to think I have good comprehension, but it took me a minute to wrap my brain around that wording. Oh well, I just had the same problem with "FO", meaning finish off, but I would of never guessed since I really haven't done color changes before. Good job Mudpie!

What a coincidence! I had just printed the pattern this morning and I too would have been stumped! Thanks mudpie for clarifying !!!
