My DH wants me to make him a pair of socks... I went to both Michaels (even though I hate them) and Jo-Anns and the best anyone could suggest was MicroSpun... First of all, it's all but impossible to work with using a smaller hook, second of all, after getting the first one done, it's still too thick to wear in shoes...

I tried the TLC Baby Yarn and like it so far, but my DH only likes dark colors, pref black and it doesn't come in that...

Can someone suggest a good sock yarn for crocheting? I would much rather buy local and support the local economy than ordering online... THANKS!

i find it odd that your Michaels didnt have any magic stripes sock yarn or something similiar.. its made by lion brand and fairly easy to find.. i am not familiar with jo-Anns and what they stock since the closest one to me is almost an hour away ..

since you want local .. i have no idea what else is there.

i can suggest www.knitpicks.com if you want to go and buy online.. their sock yarn is really nice and what i consider reasonable..

Have you tried AC Moore? They have..Patons Kroy? Sock Yarn and Lion Brand Magic Stripes Sock Yarn.
Joann's has lion brand baby soft yarn that works for socks also and I think they have plain white.
Micheals also has Paton's Grace that could be used for socks.
Good Luck

My Hobby Lobby carries Bernat "Sox" yarn for about $2.50 a ball. I used it and liked it.

My Michael's has Moda Dea Sassy Stripes which I hear is good for socks.

My JoAnn has LB Magic Stripes for about $7.00 a ball.

You might try using LB Wool Ease. I've heard that the sportweight (which is discontinued but Tuesday Morning has some) is good. I'm making a pair of socks now using the worsted weight, and I think they're going to be fine.

Hope this helps.

I had a hard time finding sock yarn in a Michaels or Jo anne type stor... My LYS always seem to have some.. BUt it's usually a bit on the expensive side. I shop the on line sites for sales... However, I was lways just refured to the KnitPicks (http://www.knitpicks.com/) website in another thread where I was askingfor sugestions on warm sock yarn... Thier prices seem really good. I havn't ordered any, yet... ( I gave the URL to my husband in an email, with a hit about hwo I wanted sock yarn for Xmass...) ...

My Michaels or JoAnns don't carry sock yarn. I found some online at JoAnns, though, on sale. I had a free shipping code for orders over 25.00.
My hubby has purchased a fine guage sock loom for a Christmas gift for me.:yay I had to have some sock yarn to try it out, right?!:wink

I'd also like to recommend www.theknitter.com since they have free shipping with no minimum order. (At knitpicks, you need to buy $30 to get free shipping... but they have really great prices. I buy from both all the time.)

There's a couple of free shipping codes for Knit Picks so you get free shipping all the time-- "AdNoShp" and "socks". They may not work anymore though, I'm not sure if they are expired or not yet (they weren't a month ago).

The Michael's near me doesn't have much fingering yarn either. Mostly baby colors and definately not striping. I love knitpicks.com

I love knitpicks! I'm making a pair of socks right now with their Sock Memories Merino. It's fabbbbulous -- and cheap! Comes in really pretty colors too! I have spent $10 a ball for Trekker sock yarn before.....and Sock Memories is 1/3 that price and just as great a feel and just as brightly colored. Definitely soft wool -- not scratchy.

Sounds like an ad for Knitpicks doesn't it. lol. I'm just glad to find wool blend sock yarn in such pretty colors without having a big price tag. :clap And their shipping prices are very reasonable. The box I had them ship to my Wool exchange partner had 12 skeins in it, I think -- and the shipping cost was about $4. I don't think that's too bad.

Hugs! Juli
