I'm teaching my friend (who is 17) to crochet next weekend, and I was wondering if anyone has any good ideas for a beginner pattern, (besides a scarf). It's been such a long time since I was learning that I forget what things are hard to do:think. Anyway, any suggestions would be appreciated. Thx!

Pot holders and dishcloths/facecloths are good to start with. HTH

as a new crocheter myself, I say pick 2. one in the round and one in rows. It's easy to get hung up on just the one. I'm having that problem right now myself.
I would go with what Melanie suggested and also maybe a granny square purse? (cute patterns for that on the Lily Brand website) or maybe even a simple hotpad worked in the round.
Unless she is planning on making stuff as gifts very soon, considering her age, I'd definitely go with the facecloth and some sort of easy worked in the round purse. one with a drawstring worked in the round or a granny square bag. That is just two granny squares joined to make a purse. I would post a link to the pattern itself but I believe you have to be a member to access... so here is the main page.

Then again, keep in mind this is from an extreme newbies perspective. lol

Thanks, I have a pattern for a drawstring bag worked in the round from when I was first starting. Maybe I could use that. Do you know where any dishcloth/facecloth/potholder patterns could be found? (I could probably look myself, but if you already know where they are, could you just post a link?)
Thanks and God bless,

I would start at Crochet Pattern Central, Rachel has done a wonderful job there and has a great collection of patterns.

When I first started crocheting, I found doing anything in a round to be difficult. Just based on my experience, I'd have her do something flat to learn the stitches first, then move into the rounds when she knows what she's doing.
The very first thing I made was a dishcloth. Nothing fancy, just the same basic stitches done over and over until it was the right size with a border around it. Another fast project would be a eyeglass/sunglass case or a cell phone holder. I know Crochet Pattern Central has some of them under the cases category, but right now the site isn't opening up for me to get you a pattern.

I am also having problems getting Crochet Pattern Central to open.....
The very first project I ever did was a lapghan! Then a few pillows. Not really sure after that, it's been awhile. But I think the cell phone/i-pod holders would be a really good idea considering her age!!
