I did a baby bunting in that stitch years and years ago. :hook It went quick and easy. I had a lot of fun doing it. And if I remember right it turned out really pretty. :blush I made it for my first born. She has a 10 year old daughter so as you can see it has been a few years. :eek I wouldn't mind doing more but you don't find many patterns for it . I think I still even have my broomstick around here someplace. :think

I did my first in the 70's. I wanted a cape, so I designed my own and still have it. Bring it out occasionally just to kinda show off. It was done in a tan tweed and trimmed in brown. It is a fast easy stitch to do.

For anyone who would be interested in trying the broomstick lace I'm sure there are tutorials out on the 'net somewhere.
Here's a few links at CPC:

As for the broomstick, I'm sure one could be made from a dowel rod of the right diameter.

The Summer 2005 edition of Crochet Fantasy had a nice tutorial along with several patterns for Broomstick Lace, if you can get your hands on that issue of the magazine. It's a really nice stitch effect. You can also use a large (either 35 or 50 mm size) knitting needle for your "broomstick".

This might be me, but I looked at the info at CPC and it just makes me crazy when someone used varigated yarn for a stitch example.

They sometimes call it peacock stitch or even Peruvian crochet depending on how old the books are you find it in. Or even called Jiffy lace in Australia.

i know this is coming thru way after the original but i have been scouring the net for smoe patterns other than scarf or afghan.
i made my sister a top with this, sewed up a skirt, and bought a turtleneck all in the same color (late 70s). those patterns are gone now but i sure would like to find some patterns to use broomstick with

You beat me to it! I've also heard it called Jiffy Lace. Peacock and Peruvian crochet are new to me though.:)

I think I saw some pattern books on Brookstick Lace at Jo Ann's super store yesterday. You might try their website and/or store.:)

I remember trying this too....bought the broomstick "pin"(really just a big plastic knitting needle) 'cause my Mom wouldn't let me cut up her broomstick....lol:rofl , it seemed perfectly reasonable to me at 16 or 17 when I was in full creative Diva mode! Anyway it went fast and easy and I remember it made a very pretty airy stitch.....probably look great as a shawl! Lilbopeep can we see a picture of your cape?

Actually, it was CrochetJC that had the cape. I'd like to see it too!
