Hello fellow crocheters I am really looking forward to this CAL. I have not picked colores but do know I will be taking it to Mexico for the PAstor of the church we work with so I know it will be bright and colorful!!!! I am a homeschool mom of 3 and love crocheting. I am a bit challenged with PCs so if someone wants to do a button just go right ahead!!! So Welcome grab your coffee(tea or soda) hook yarn and your bible and lets do the scripture gahn!!!!:manyheart

Sounds like it would be a beautiful afgan...don't know if I can do the CAL...but I would like the pattern. I tried to find it on LA website and it's not there is it out of print? Is there a place to try to which you can direct me?

This is my first CAL and I can't wait to get started. :yay I'm not sure yet what colors I'll use but it will probably be in pastels. And I'll most likely use Red Heart SuperSaver yarn that way I don't have to worry about dye lots and can buy one skein at a time. I'm a stay at home, homeschooling, crocheting Mom of two little girls. Can't wait to meet anyone else in the CAL. As for designing a button, I have no idea how to do that. I'm sure after one is designed I'll have to be told how to use it.

Hi Jimmie
Ok, I picked out my colors. I am using Caron Perfect Match in Taupe , White and soft peach . Hope it looks good ! I am going to try to start on it tonite. If I can budget my time and work on each thing for a little bit each day, then I'll get it done, just s-l-o-w-l-y ........

Ok, after a lot of thinking about this, I have decided to join this CAL as well. When voting I was really torn between this one and the stripes but wanted to do the stripes over this one in the end. However, now that we are doing CAL's for all 3, I will definately have to do this one too! I think it would be a wonderful present for my Grandmother. She's a very strict old Roman Catholic. Church is her life. She walks 2 miles each way to church 2 times a week and she's going to be 85 this year. I don't know how much longer she'll be around, but I think she would love this. (At 85, she's in much better shape than my 67 year old dad!) So Julie and Jimmie, looks like I'm on board as well! God help me! Now to decide what kind of yarn to use... Hmmmm....

Ok I was just going over this pattern and trying to decide to get more yarn or do a scrap gahn. So I am weighing paying more money or using what I have and guess what I decided????
To use what I have!!!! I have a tote and a garbage bag left that was donated for Mexico and so I am going to try and emphasize on try to do 2 of these at one time!!!! lol:lol I notice that when making these you make 2 of each of the 24 sq to get a bigger gahn. So I am toying with the fact that the 35 sq when adding extra to the sq boarder I got a nice twin size gahn and may be able to pull it off???? What do ya all think???? Still not sure!!!
I did (because I couldnt resist) do sq # 7 and it is easy if you did the 35 sq it is very simmilar to the basket weave stitch!!! So with a few more hours left in this year I am off to do..............
You know:hook

What does this afghan look like?:)

Jimmie Lu
December 31st, 2005, 08:16 PM
Its a sq sampler afgahn It has different stitches for the sq's and a scripture o go along with it. Like for example there is a block called waves and it is backed by a scripture from Matthew about Jesus and the sea. Hope this helps

Okay, I was so excited about starting my first CAL that I put my girls in the car and drove to Joann's. I got there 30 minutes before they closed. I had a hard time deciding but here is what I'm going to use (I think!:think )

TLC Essentials in Island (this is a varigated yarn with white, blue, yellow and green in it)
TLC Essentials in Lt. Celery
Red Heart Supersaver in Cornmeal
Caron one pound in a blue color (I don't know the name of this color. I didn't buy it yet because I want to wait until I have a 40% off coupon).

The nice thing is that I had two 40% of coupons to use and a gift card worth $10. I have a hard time spending much money on yarn. I try to only buy it when I have a coupon.

I hope to start the afghan tomorrow. I'll have to describe my progress because I don't have a digital camera. Even if I did I wouldn't know how to get the pictures from the camera to the computer screen. You all are so high tech, and I feel like I have a Fred Flintstone camera (you know the kind, it has a bird pecking the picture into stone!)

Hi girls,
I'm definately in this cal. The only problem is I'm also in the 35 squares, and I'm going to do the Bobbles and Lace too. Not enough time, and my hands won't hold out long enough..lol. Your colors sound beautiful. Hubby bought me (at Goodwill) 12 skeins of bright tangerine (orange) color a while ago. I want to do something with that. I also have some brown, but I don't think I want brown with it. Maybe yellows and greens with the orange. What do you all think...It will be very bright that's for sure. Or maybe orange, peaches and cream. I just can't decide. Here I am trying to start 3 afghans all at once. I must be mad...

:yay:yay:yay:yay:yay:yay

Thank you JimmieLu and JulieKay!!!! :manyheart

:yay:yay:yay:yay:yay:yay

I got two gift cards to Hobby Lobby for Christmas, I already had the book and I decided to make an afghan for me, really for me and decided this was it. Although I had a couple of other close choices. I plan to make this big enough for my queen bed, boy am I ambitious. :lol

I've chosen the TLC Essentials in Claret (a burgandy), Navy, Dark Thyme, Dark Plum and for the joining and trim, Linen. I'm so excited to do this!

I have been taking care of my mom after her hip replacement, and have been doing doilies there at her house and so my home project will be this afghan. I've already done square 1, honeycomb, in the plum and almost completed one in the thyme. That's what I'll probably be working on to meet the new year here.:hook

Well I have officially started my first CAL as of 11:30pm last night. I rang in the New Year by crocheting. :yay :yay I cut a Michael's coupon for 50% off out of today's paper. So it looks like I'll be running to Michael's today or tomorrow. Now that I think of it, I'll just take the Michael's coupon to Joann's because I know Joann's has the color yarn I still need for the afghan. I've been thinking that instead of whipstitching my squares together that I would crochet them. I seem to remember a website (called something like Priscilla's crochet, I can't quite remember the whole name :think ) that showed how to join squares by crocheting. Does anyone remember seeing this?? Happy Crocheting in 2006 everyone.

Cindy and Karin - your colors both sound pretty !

Cindy- sounds like you got some good yarn buys !

Patty- I know what you mean. I have joined so many of these crochetalongs--- I think I'm gonna have to scale back and only work on one at a time -- I'm not good at doing more than one thing at a time !

Jimmie Lu
January 2nd, 2006, 09:29 AM
GOOD MORNING!!!!!! Time to get up brush your teeth and comb your hair!! (Hygene is important too) Kiss the hubby (or other) good by and then grab your hook and got to town(only if you need yarn) :lol
I have not gotten any sq done Boo hoo!! I do have sq 7 done because I could not resist. I have decided to make the sq all the same color (teal) and edged in black It looks sooooo cool. Mainly I choose those because well I had them:lol

Julie Kay- If it helps any I have decided to put a hold on the grandmothers flower garden. I am making it as a gift and wont need it until April 2007 ( I think I have a little time) Budgetting time is important and its ok to say there are too many eggs on my plate!!!:think Not sure I know what that means it is a saying around here!!

If you can not tell by my tone and willingness to talk this morning I am in an extreemly good mood. I useually am but this morning I am happier that ever!!!

I am not sure if all of you are ganna attempt this with your gahn or not BUT I am attaching the scripture right to the sq. Since we are taking it to Mexico I have written the scripture in Spanish(this helps me learn the language)

ANYONE-Has anyone designed a button??? Dont look to your fearless leader because I am PC Challenged

Everyone have a fantastic day!!!

JulieKay
January 2nd, 2006, 11:15 AM
Hi Jimmie
Well, not that I'm backing out on you, but I will probably have to put this one and the stripes further down on my list too ! I don't know how you do it, keeping up with so many things at once !
I have to get moving on the flower garden and the L & B , then move on from there .I am just not good at juggling several things at once .
I'll be glad to jump in here often though and keep an eye out for photos ! Can't wait to see some finished squares !
I got one of the number one done, but don't know if I'll use it or not. The square turned out really big, even dropping down a hook size . When I re-start it I may have to go with a thinner yarn !
Have a great day- it's good to hear you're in such a wonderful mood today !:manyheart

Jimmie I think that's an awesome idea to attach the scriptures right to the afghan. If it were a gift I think I'd do that (now that you've thought of it ;) ), but since it is going on my bed, I think that would just be a mess after a couple of nights. :P

I spent quite a bit of time last night trying to figure out about how many I was going to need, the color order, which blocks for which square. I must be :loco. 121 blocks. I am definately :coo.

Julie & Jimmie I've often wondered how of you do so many CALs at once. I'm not so good at :juggle , so I admire that. :nworthy

Julie, I know what you mean about block 1. Mine came out about 8" wide, so I decided my block size was going to be 8" square instead of 7". I truly hate ripping things out! And I figure it'll go further on my blanket for my bed, less blocks over all that way. :hook It was a bit more of a challenge to get block 2 to 8", but it wasn't too far off with the H hook I'm using.

I'll post pictures 1) when I get the dig camera issue figured out 2) when I have time and 3) when I figure out how to post pictures here.

Well I'd best go find something to support my lack of sleep :morcoffee before I start to see :elle.

P.S. I just love all the emoticons, I recognize some of the from mazeguy, he's so awesome. I belong to another forum board and he designed :ghug at our request.

January 2nd, 2006, 12:29 PM
Jimmie, I was thinking the same thing about attaching the scriptures! I just haven't figured out how to do it! Any ideas???

I think for this Ghan I will use the Caron's One Pounders I have left from the 35 Grannies... I will probably add some blues and such but will use up the pinks and white I have as well. I think it would be pretty with lots of colors...

Glad you're in a good mood today! I woke up feeling like crud. I am congested and have a sinus headache. Oh well, it's better than the migraine I had yesterday! LOL

Have a good day everyone!

Julie, thanks for posting the link for the flat braid joining technique. Have you or anyone else tried this? I'm still working on the first square.

Jimmie Lu
January 2nd, 2006, 04:55 PM
Block 7 turned out big! Bigger than 7 inches soooo How to fix the prob!!!! Since I am doing all blocks the same color When the sq is sq(hunh) If it needs to be larger I wil do a round of SC then attach the black for a boarder (I did that on the 63 sq and it worked out fine)

Attach scriptures- I am pinning them for now I may switch to this printable material (Wal Mart) and sew it on later or just leave it like that!! :think Still not sure!!!

karin4christ
January 2nd, 2006, 09:41 PM
Decisions, decisions, decisions. I finished crocheting my first block, the honeycomb one (block #1). It turned out larger than 7 inches, more like 8 inches.:angry I started crocheting block #2, the cross one. To make the pattern come out right I had to do four double crochets in the middle instead of three. But the real problem is that for the first block I used RedHeart SuperSaver yarn and for the second block I'm using TLC Essentials. Well the RedHeart is a thicker yarn than the TLC. I'm thinking that I'd be better off using just TLC in the afghan. But I went to Joann's and their TLC selection was pretty picked through. :( I think it should be a law that if a store carries a varigated yarn they MUST carry other skeins that correspond to the colors in that varigated yarn. Whats a girl to do?? :think

I want to start this afghan as soon as I finish the 35 squares within the next week. The only thing I'm kinda confused about is which colors to use? :think I plan to make this as a gift to my brother and his fiancee`. She likes fall colors, he likes green (I'm going to make him a green ripple afghan, so I'm mostly concerned with this "fall colors" concept). Any ideas? I was thinking tan, some soft greens, and maybe orange? I dunno, I'll figure it out and stop by Michael's to see if they have the pattern book first.

Jimmie Lu
January 4th, 2006, 01:14 PM
:lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol NOPE!!!! But then again it was dark when we left so I honestly did not get a chance yesterday to do it!!! IT GETS DONE TODAY!!!! OR I will have to get Julie Kay and her baseball bat!!!! lol:eek

karin4christ
January 4th, 2006, 06:57 PM
I finished square #2 and started and then finished square #3. Let me tell you I had the WORST time getting square #3 to come out right. I was :bang and then I did what any crocheter would do. I put the project down, went to the kitchen, got out a chocolate bar, smeared peanut butter all of it, ate it all, and then went back to my crocheting. Finally, I figured it out. If anyone has trouble with square #3 let me know and I'll tell what I did to figure it out. Most likely, NO ONE will have any trouble with that square. I'll check in tomorrow to see how everyone else is coming along.

I finished up square #4 today. It was an easy square to do. :yay I thought that square #1 used up a 1/4 of my skein in making it. I've also been thinking of how to include the scripture verses with the afghan. I think I'm going to make a table on the computer as many squares wide and long as my afghan is and then I'll type the bible book and the verse in the square. At the bottom of the page I'll type out the full scripture verse. Did that make sense to anyone?

Jimmie Lu
January 6th, 2006, 10:53 AM
Ok Julie Kay however even good leaders need a shove once in a while right???

Now for the happy dance!!! I finished sq 1 and sq 2 I was kinda tired so I didnt even start #3 it does seem like it is worded a little funny but again I was tired.

And you are right that #1 sq had me thinking about the amount of yarn YAOwee it did use alot.

So how is everyone else doing!!

Morning ladies

Still waiting on my pattern to come so thought i would go ahead and get my yarn,i would like to use the colors shown on the cover, can some tell me how much is needed and the colors please.I would like to have it for when the pattern gets here.

I'm hoping to join in if I can ever find the pattern, lol. So far, my locals are out of stock. I'm watching an auction on ebay.....keep your fingers crossed. I'm thinking of sage, buttercup and another color(haven't decided). I would like to punch it up a bit, I'm thinking a wine color, not sure yet. It would sure help if my local stores had a larger selection, lol. Anyway, will let you know. Have fun!

hischildsindi
January 6th, 2006, 07:44 PM
:clap Jimmie you got some more squares done! #3 is interesting, but I didn't think too hard really. To get mine to the 8" I've been averaging I had to 2 more chains, which means you need one extra on each end... least that's what I did. :P I'm sure you can conquer it, it's only a widdy biddy square.

Sheylen the book calls for worsted weight:

White-260 yards (260 gm/ 9 oz)
Light teal-745 yards (280 gm/ 10 oz)
Teal-890 yards (340 gm/ 12 oz)
Light peach- 965 yards (370 gm/ 13 oz)
Peach-260 yards (260 gm/ 9 oz)

That is if you can get it to a 7" square as the gauge says (w/o edging). So far mine are 8" (w/o edging) and I've also heard a couple others say the same. Which will mean you might need more than the given amounts.

sissie44
January 7th, 2006, 06:21 AM
hey shaylen (sis) have you gotten the pattern yet? I to am really looking forward to getting started on this one!! still not sure yet on what colors I will be using. I will have to wait till I see the pattern in front of me! (you know how my brain works LOL) no coment needed from you either!! LOL

How is everyone else doing so far?
how many squares have you done?

Hugs,

I was going to add a quote from Abraham Lincoln to my signature: "I'm a slow walker, but I never walk back." Well, after doing and frogging all of square #6, I think the quote should be for me: "I'm a slow walker, but I invariably walk back." Its actually all my fault for square #6 needing frogged. So far it was the easiest square to make but I didn't measure the width of the block until I was finished. I didn't think I needed to measure the width as they were all coming out to be about 8 inches. Well, this one turned out to be 9 inches! :eek :eek At first I thought that when I blocked it I could get it back to 8 inches. But one inch is alot to ease in. So I decided to frog it all. This time I only chained 27 instead of 31. Its coming out to a perfect 8 inches now. I hope this helps someone.

Very cool button, thanks! I'm going to try to pick up the rest of my yarn tomorrow. Haven't been able to start yet, have a major case of tendonitis! From.....yep, crocheting, lol. I guess I should have taken a break after the Christmas marathon, but I had a few to do for an after Christmas party, then...baby ghan for co-worker, and on and on. I counted up that I've done 2 purses, 2 hats, 6 skinny scarves, 1 shawl, 1 large wool scarf, 1/2 of an afghan, a baby ghan and some threadies since after Thanksgiving.:knit I guess that was too much, lol. Anyway, as soon as it gets better I will begin. I go back to work Tuesday night so I'm hoping to start before then. If not, it will be Saturday before I am home again. Work three 12 hour shifts and sleep is all I do on those days...ughhh.:out I'd rather be crocheting! Keep up the good work ladies! :cheer

snowflake, you are always welcome to jump in when ever you get the booklet. It is Leisure Arts leaflet 2770. Mine is copyrighted 1995, so they may be out of print, but check around some there are sources that may have it. I don't know all the sources, there are others who may have ideas where to get one.

Jimmie, teal and black are very pretty together. They just happened to be my senior class colors... brings back ummm... memories. :eek :lol

I've not been able to work on my afghan much lately, for some reason work just won't let me sit at my desk and crochet, they think I actually need to do ummm work. I've gotten 9.5 done thus far, as soon as I have time, ha.. I'll post some pictures or give a link.

:cheer Everyone keep crocheting! :cheer

Got back from work a few minutes ago. I get to be home tonight and tomorrow night, so I picked up the rest of my yarn and am ready to start! :yay I'm going to use Caron SS in: Dark sage, Light sage, yellow, Autumn red and Bone. It will be my Mother's and this is closest to the colors in her bedroom. I'm very excited, as this is my first CAL. I'm just irritated that I have to go to work and can't really dig in until next weekend, when I will have a few days off in a row, lol. Just did 41 hours in less than 3 days and I'm pooped so, today is a bust since I'll sleep. Will let you know how it goes after tomorrow, lol.
Keep hooking!

Snowflake, there is only one afghan in the book, but it's made up of 48 squares with 24 varying patterns. There are a few 'scripture afghans' out there, but this, I believe is the only 'sampler' style. I have another one with full afghans using one pattern inspired by scripture. :hug

I'm just starting square #9 garden rows. I'm really enjoying this CAL. Whats going to be so exciting is to see how everyone's afghan will look when its done. They will all be so different because of the different colors and square placements. I'm going to try somehow to get a picture posted of my afghan when its done. Of course, that will be MONTHS from now. Happy crocheting everyone! :hug

Croshay,
It is never too late to join. I have only about 10.5 blocks completed (but not trimmed) and I'm making it big enough to fit my bed, 121 blocks total. So look for the pattern and join the gang, you are always welcome.

Thanks for the welcomes. :hug I guess I'm not too far behind to jump in soon. I still have to get ahold of the pattern and decide what yarn to use. I think I'll use Caron SS because I just love working with it. I've never used it for an afghan though, and I wonder if it will be as warm as the RH Super Saver I usually use.

I made the 63 square afghan a few years ago and did it all in white (the squares and the edging). Actually I think I ended up making only 48 squares (made the afghan 6 squares by 8) because I got tired of it.

I think I'll make this scripture afghan in shades of brown/tan to match my MIL's living room. Her couch is brown and that's probably where it will go when I give it to her next Christmas. I just have to check on the color selection for the Caron SS, and if they're too limited, I'll go with the RH Super Saver.

Looking forward to getting started. :hook

How is everyone else coming along?

I've only added 1 square, so now I've gotten 11 done, but tonight I trimmed and crocheted 7 blocks together. :hook I decided to use the flat braid (or waht I think is it or a variation of) to connect them. I love how it looks, although it can be a bit tricky in the corner where all 4 blocks meet. I'll try to get a picture posted in the next day or two.

Keep crocheting everyone. :cheer:cheer:cheer

Cindy, I would love to see a picture of how the flat braid technique looks with this afghan. I was thinking of using this technique also but I was a little concerned about how difficult it would be to do this technique with squares all crocheted differently. Did that make any sense?:think I've never done this technique before and I thought it would be difficult if you didn't end up with the same amount of stitches on each side of the square. Please tell me someone out there understands what I'm trying to say. Well, anyhow, everyone keep crocheting!:hug

Here's what I did the other night, no more added to it... been busy with February's swap square :hook and limited time, like most of you all.

I looked at what I did vs the flat braid (http://members.aol.com/_ht_a/lffunt/flatbraid.htm) joining technique. I did not single crochet, I slip stiched and I did not take the chain off my hook (to go through the loops). Other than that it's basically the same, lays probably not quite as flat, but still lays well. I didn't think until now to try and get a close up. Sorry it's not the best picture, still playing with my new camera.

Blocks shown are first row: 21, 15, 3 and 2nd row: 22, 5, 1, 23

O.kay... I've been toying with the idea of joining this CA since it was started. I've gotten the leaflet from an aution off of e-bay this last week and all I need to do is pick my colors.

A little info. about me... My name is Theresa. I am happily married to my highschool sweetheart. We have 4 children whom we homeschool. I have been crocheting since I was 9/10 years old but have never been a pattren follower. I always had trouble reading them. Over the last few months I have gotten much better at reading and have made a few things (hats, poncho's, a purse and a pig pet pillow) using a pattern. I have the 63 block afghan book also but have never attempted it. :blush I actually bought that book for more ideas of stitches than to actually make the afghan.

So... when I get the yarn I'll let cha all know. I know that this afghan will be a gift, but I'm not quite sure for who yet. We have chosen, as a family to only give gifts this year that are made... a lot of mine will be crocheted or packs of cards (that I make with stamping). Hubby does wood working and the kids are just creative. :manyheart

I'm excited and a bit nervous to start, but I've read through all posts and it's nice to have others who have walked before me who can help me out if I get stuck. :)

CAL stands for Crochet Along. For this particular CAL we are doing the Scripture Afghan. It is basically just a bunch of members working on the same project, which is pretty cool because we are able to help each other out if we get stuck and it's super fun to see all the different completed afghans in their different colors.

I picked up my yarn for today and I'm done with my first square (sq. #1 - honeycomb). I still need to do this one in the second color.

Everyday Crochet
January 25th, 2006, 10:46 AM
I got square # 1 done last night and started on square # 4.

When I bought my yarn yesterday I couldn't remember how many of each color. I thought it was three but it's four plus the joining color and so I need to go find 2 more colors for my squares. I have Aran for my joining color and have Med. Thyme and Dark plum for the squares. I might look for a lighter version of each of these or go with a butter looking color that I saw yesterday and something else.

Anywhoo... until Next week I am only working with my Med Thyme and Dark plum so I am only working on those squares for those colors.

Hi everyone, just me checking in. Well I did another square today #13 the heart. After I finished it, I completely frogged it. It measured 9 inches square (yikes!) :eek All of my other squares have been turning out about 8 inches. So I redid the square leaving out row 3 and row 18. And I also left 2 chains off of the beginning chain (only did 24 chains) and then left a hdc off of each side of the heart. The square now measures about 8 inches. I hope that helps someone else. I was using the redheart supersaver yarn which is the thickest yarn I'm using in the afghan the rest of the yarn is TLC yarn. Thank goodness it didn't really take a long time to do the square. How's everyone else doing? Keep on crocheting!:yay

Hi Karin,

Thanks so much for all the info. It's so much easier to follow along behind someone else. Thanks for being that someone. :D

When everyone says they finished sq. # ____ does that mean you have finished both colors for that square or just done one of them? I would like to know how far everyone is.

Also, are you finishing it up with the joining color right away or are you doing that later?

karin4christ
January 26th, 2006, 06:14 PM
I'm only doing one of each square first and then I'll start back around and do them all over again. (Did that make any sense?) I haven't added the joining color to any of my squares yet basically because I haven't decided what color to use yet. I figured I would wait until all the squares were done and go from there.

Karin, thanks for the hint about square #13. I am glad you finally conquered it. :clap

Theresa, I patterned mine out since I am making it larger than the book (or at least that is my goal) and thus I am trying to do a few squares and connect, do a few and connect. So my squares are not being done in order nor all the same square at once, it's pretty much done at random through the book, but in an order on my patterned out.

Darlene, the only way I think to get it would be to find it online or accidentally at a store, because I think it is out of print.

Linda, great job on your progress. I've not been working on mine at all since I connected it and since it's for me, yup it goes last on the list of to do. I've not worked square 9 yet, if I go as "planned" out, then I have 24 other squares to do first. If ya want mind verification :devil let me know and I can do that square next, but then again that doesn't mean that my mind isn't fried too. :lol

I haven't had a chance to work on mine this weekend. I had ladies Bible study Sat. morning, then a b-day party for my niece. Today we had church and then my sons b-day party.

I did pick up my other two colors. I even found them in 8 oz for 1.99 at the LYS in my hometown when I went home for my niece's b-day.

I am using Dark Plum and Pale Plum and Med. Thyme and Light Thyme. With Aran for the joining color.

I bought sooooo much yarn yesterday. I don't see many 8 oz skeins around anymore so it was a good deal.

Hopefully I'll have some quieter nights this week after the kids go to bed so that I can work on some squares. So far mine all seem to be about the 7 inch. Hopefully they will all work out to be that.

I finished wheat sheaf, block #17, this (very early) morning. The block was coming out to 9 inches in width.:eek So I started over and only chained 22. This will leave out an entire 5dc over a ch-3 sp segment. The block now measures about 7 1/2 inches. I figured it would be easier to have to stretch it a 1/2 inch when blocking as opposed to having to ease in a whole inch. Now tell me, am I the only one having this problem?? :think This has happened on my last two blocks. I have visions of all of you crocheting perfect 7 or 8 inch blocks everytime.

Hiya Heather, welcome!

1) I do believe the pattern book is out of print, so the only places would be an accidental find at a local store or some place online.

I've found a couple of hits for it on ebay:

http://cgi.ebay.com/SCRIPTURE-AFGHAN-24-PATTERN-STITCHES-INSPIRED-BY-BIBLE_W0QQitemZ8256996801QQcategoryZ11797QQssPageN ameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

2) Yes, each block has a reference scripture for it. They are actually in the book.

3) No, where online that the pattern is printable. I'm sure the stitches are not unique to the book so they are probably some place online, as most stitches are nowadays, but specifically regarding this book, no.

I hope you can join us.

Just thought I'd drop in and see how things are going over here. It sounds like this afghan has been quite a challenge ! I am very excited to see the finished product once you all get them done. They sure looked like pretty squares, but also pretty challenging !
Don't give up, it'll be worth it once you finish it .
I'll check back in for photos one of these days !

Well I've done squares 1, 2 & 3 so far and hope to start number 4 yet tonight. I am doing both colors of each square right away so that I am not getting confused. Especially since on some I've had to adjust hook size. So far the squares have been easy enough to figure out if I'm alone... no kids in sight... and can slowly mark off what I've done. I'm excited to be doing this CAL but nervous about some of the squares.

Well, I've finished one of each of the pattern squares. Now I have to go back and do them one more time. I was having a bad day yesterday (lets see: I was being stubborn, selfish, petty, etc. etc.) :yell :grumpy :grump My mood even carried over to my crocheting. Block #23, seed, came out to only 7 inches. Remember mine have been averaging 8 inches. I knew I should have frogged this square and added a couple chains to the starting chain but I was too stubborn to do it. Now I have to decide if I want to try to stretch it an inch when blocking or just frog it and do it again. I HATE when I'm like this. :angry

sounds like you need a kick in the stuborn pants (just kiding) I have only 15 sq done due to I ran out of yarn. Then I can tget that color any more so I decided to make it 2 colors instead of teal wraped in black I have a hot pink(very colorful) that matches well so I will be starting up again.

Well I have a total of 7 sq. done so far. I can not figure out the crown one... square number 4 I think. I've frogged it so many times and for some reason I just dont like how it's turning out. It just doesn't seem right so I put it aside and started working on a different one. I'm going to sit down and try to figure it out again tonight.

I liked the crown. The waves one is throwing me for a loop. I REALLY don't like the slip stitches in it. I'm going to check my stitch books for an alternative.

Your scripture afghan sounds like so much fun. Somebody was gonna send me the pattern but didn't so I guess I'll forget about it for now.
I might just get out my leaflet with the 63 squares and use some of those instead.

Still trying to decide...with lots of other irons in the fire too.... :hook

Has anyone made a button for this Crochet A Long? I've been through the first few pages, but didn't see one.

I'd make one if I had the capability, but this computer does well to log onto the 'net.

I have 3 sisters and 1 sister in law.. and at least 2 or 3 of them would love this afghan. I may have to make it 4 times.. eek. Right now I'm making all the squares in different shades of purple. I'll decide what to mix and match after I get them done. If I have extra.. I'll find something cool to do with them.

I like the idea of writing the scriptures out. I'm thinking of making a Table, identifying the squares and then either putting the whole quoted scripture or just the Book, Chapter and Verse in the correct square. That way the recipient can have it on a seperate sheet of paper to look at. I'm still considering how that will work.

Ok.. I need to get back to my squares.. I found more purple yarn!!! :clap

Thank you Karin, I will look at your notes. I moved on to the leaf square... that one was nice and easy. Now I'm on the star one and just as confused. :think I should have plenty of pattern reading experience by the time this is over. I'm good as long as no one is talking to me. Well ladies, I feel as if I am a snail working on this ghan, lol. Some of the squares take forever, others I can do in 1 tv show. Oh well, I am up to number 12, have done two of each. Originally started this as a Christmas gift for my Mother, but her birthday is coming up.....if I finish it in time, lol. Will try to get more pics soon. Desktop pc is down, so only have the laptop right now, and can't seem to find my A drive. By the way, working on this became a LOT more fun after I got my new Jimbo hook!!:c9

I'm having trouble with the Angel square (forget the number.. i'm not doing them in order). All of my squares except one have been right at 7 inches. The one other that didn't come out at 7, I redid with a G hook, and bingo it was the right size.

The Angel square I've done twice now, first time it came out at nearly 9 inches.. redid with a G hook and it's right at 8 now.

I guess I'm going to have to find my F hook and crochet tight.

btw.. for the squares that call for a starting chain.. I'm using a hook 2 sizes up to make the starting chain loose enough.

I really like this afghan so far.. even the joining has been fun, which is usually a HUGE turnoff for me.

Hi All,
I was trying to decide between this CAL and the 63 More, and since this pattern arrived first, this was my decision. I started #1 today. I am using Caron One Pounders Dk blue, Lt blue, Dk green, Lt green, and white. It should be interesting to see if it takes me as long as the 63 squares did. I know you all are probably way ahead of me, but that's good if I need help!:blush

Hi All, I just started this CAL this week, have one square done in CARON One Pound, and because I had to use a "G" hook to get a 7" square, it came out all dense and stiff. I have never used this yarn and thought it would be great for this project because it would give great stitch definition. Should I frog, use a larger hook and just count on making them all bigger? I hated that first square pattern stitch, but maybe it was just the yarn. I'm sure I can use the yarn on something else, lol, but I also have yarn for the 63 More Afghan (lt blue Simply Soft) which I could start.

WHat yarns did you all use besides RH, has anyone else used Caron 1 lb. for this project?

:nworthy Linda :nworthy

Wow, I'm in awe at you!!! Your hook must be wore out, you worked it so hard. I can't wait to see pictures of it. Congratulations.

I've not budged an inch on my afghan, I think I may need the ball bat or something or a good :kick.

allimac, I am using TLC Essentials which is a brand of Red Heart still, and I am getting pretty consistent 8" squares with the H hook. It doesn't matter the size of the block, so long as they are all the same (or nearly so). If you've only done one square, this would be the time to frog it and start over, before you get more done and thn decide you don't like the overall look of it.

Jimmie Lu
February 18th, 2006, 06:24 PM
I sadly admit I have not worked on mine either!!! Boohoo!!! Ok I am over it now!!! Congrads Linda on finishing We wanna see photos soon!!!
Welcome Alli. Dont frog yet try the next sq the first one will be "stiff" no matter what I think. So give the next one a try and then decide. Your colors sound nice.
I have been busy with the olympics but this is first WIP to be finished when that is over.

Lisaizme
February 18th, 2006, 09:58 PM
Hi Alli,

When I first started this, my first square (honeycomb) was 8 inches.. so I figured they would all be 8. Well, I got #2, 3 & 4 done and they were 7 inches.. so I went back and redid #1 and just held the yarn a bit tighter and it came out at 7 (with an H hook).

Yes, some of the squares are stiffer than others. I've even had to go down to an F hook on the Angel square (and one other.. can't remember which one now).

I've finally finished making all the squares.. now I'm starting to put them together. I really really like this afghan so far.

One question to the others who are further along:

When you're doing the edging.. some of the squares have more than 25 stitches on an edge. Do you make the decreases (to reach 25) on the first edging round or the second edging round? I've been doing it on the first.. but some squares come out looking not quite even. Wondering if maybe they'd look better if I did the adjusting on the second edging round.

Your thoughts?

JulieKay
February 19th, 2006, 09:10 AM
Hi Alli
Not that I have done this afghan so I'm not exactly an expert on it, but I do think the caron pounder yarn is thicker than others . You may want to try it with a size bigger hook . I think a G would make most patterns too stiff using this yarn .
Just my 2 cents !:) Good luck !

THANKS toCindy, Jimmie Lu, Lisa, and Julie for your tips and encouragement. I did a second square #1 using an H hook and instead of doing the YO draw through 2 lps 5 times, I did 4. It came out perfectly and I like it better. I also did one square #2 and it came out good as well. I think I am going to stick with it for now.

Hi All,
I decided after completing 4 squares that I didn't LOVE my yarn, so I started over last night with some Caron Simply Soft from my stash. It is going to be blues and greens with white for the edging. I figure if I am going to put so much time into it, I should use a yarn I love! I'll let you know if I make any progress during this school vacation week.

Hi All, I am interested if anyone else is just starting out on this afghan. I have completed the first 2 blocks of #1 using Caron Simply Soft and they came out perfectly using an "I" hook. I say that, but I didn't exactly follow the directions that said to pop the bobbles to the right side (even number). I left them to the back and am using the odd number side as my right side. I just couldn't get them to pop to the even side and it didn't look right. I was even wondering if the directions were misprinted. :think Love my yarn, love my colors, I'm just a little slow going as I usually only work on it an hour or so at night. I look so forward to working on it all day, finally get the 4 y-old to bed, and then I am t-i-r-e-d. I love doing projects like this that are easy to take along though in the car. I can crochet while my hubby is in Home Depot to my heart's content! :hook

The crochet olympics had temporarily sidelined me from the scripture afghan. But over the last few days I've started up on this afghan again. What's funny is that I've made every square once and am starting back around again. And I still am making mistaking and having to frog things. I was going to make this afghan for my mom but now I'm thinking I'll give it to my younger daughter's Sunday school teachers. They are husband and wife and have done such a wonderful job teaching each of my daughters. I want to give them some encouragement and recognition of the great job they do. This has kind of gotten me thinking about other people in my life who are a great blessing to me but to whom I don't often show my appreciation for. Maybe the world would be a kinder place if everyone would receive a handmade item once in awhile. Have fun crocheting everyone!:manyheart

I'm thinking either Yellow/Golds (Blue & Gold was my HS colors) or maybe some Beige's.. I think I have TLC in Linen already.

Then again, Navy & Pink look good together... decisions decisions.

I'm going to devote this weekend to making & posting pics of projects.. so probably won't get any thing else done.

I am on my last square. :cheer :clap :cheer But here's the problem, I haven't added the edging to any of the squares because I wasn't sure yet what color I was going to use for it. This morning I read through the instructions for the edging and realized I need to crochet around each square in its own colored yarn (do you know what I mean?). I thought the edging was going to be in all one color. Its not really a big deal but now I will have more ends to weave in. YUCK! :angry Besides that everything is going fine.

I'm crocheting the edging around each of the squares and I'm about halfway throught the blocks. I'm enjoying this CAL but does it seem to be taking a long time! Traci,
I started this afghan several months ago and got sidetracked learning how to knit and doing a baby afghan for a friend. Now I am back and am going to start working on it again, so you won't be alone. I only have both colors of the first seven squares done. I, too, am using Caron Simply Soft and I LOVE it. Getting the guage is not always easy, but you'll figure it out by trial and error. Good luck and keep us posted on your progress!

Hi there!! Glad to have someone to work along with. I just started my first block. This site has got me going in all different directions with so many neat projects and charities and stuff!! I just love it! I have to force myself to FOCUS and start actually finishing some things!
It's the first time I've worked with the SS yarn and I do love it! :manyheart What colors are you using? Ok, off to finish the posts and back to the hook!!

Traci,
I am using soft green, soft blue, light jade, and lt country blue, and coconut white for the last round and joining.
I did keep a few notes on the first few that I did, so if you have questions, I might be of help. Have a great weekend crocheting!

I'm so bummed but I need to drop out of this CAL. I have way too much going on and barely time to work on my MAM for the MAM CAL. I want to do this at some point but not right now.
Thanks,

Traci, sorry you have to step out of this CAL. But no worries, pop in and join us again when things free up or just whenever.

My progress has be stagnated and derailed. My mom died recently and that's where I did most of it, when I went to visit her, so it's getting set aside for a while.

Hi Susie,

Welcome to this CAL. I got my pattern leaflet on eBay, there's a current one now at http://tinyurl.com/rp5qb with a buy it now price that seems not unreasonable.

Make sure you get the "Scripture Afghan, 24 stitches inspired by the bible" not Afghans inspired by Scripture. Which is probably still a neat pattern, but not the one for this CAL.

I'll look around a little more and see if I can find more places to get it, and post if I find more sources.

Sorry I don't know how to answer your other question.

Hmmm... thread must have been moved to archive for inactivity.

I'm considering ditching this afghan and I don't know what I'm going to do with what I have done and together.... don't know. Since my mom died, I've not had the heart to pull it out and work on it, let alone the time. It was her house that I have done about 80% of what I have done. I always took it with me. She smoked so it was my way of "justifying" something for me... since it was mine it could be around smoke.

Well, best wishes to those still working on this.

I see that this was started almost a year ago and I don't know how these Crochetalong's work (is that what CALs stands for?) but this pattern interests me. How can I get it? Another post said it is Leisure Arts Leaflet 2770. I haven't been out shopping for it but there's a Hobby Lobby and a Michael's in my town as well as other needlework stores. Have you finished your afghan?

Thanks for your reply!

Jeannie, if you can't find the book in the store, check E-Bay here: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=140021647934&category=11797

I made this afghan years ago and still get compliments on it as each square is so unique - I sometimes have a hard time remembering what pattern goes with what scripture - good thing there is no test at the end~ LOLOL~
it was very interesting to make and I use some of the pattern squares when making squares for WUA in our community.

A wonderful FGM :queen sent me the pattern book :mdust just the other day! :cheer :clap Woo Hoo!!!! :woo:woo

I've made 2 of the squares with Caron's one pounder in peach. I did #2, Crosses, and #3, Crown, and edged them with I Love This Yarn white. I'm using an I hook and had to add one more pattern of the crosses to make it square...8". I want a bigger afghan.

I guess I'll reverse my light and dark colors cause #2 and #3 calls for the light peach but I guess my Caron's peach is the darker one now cause I got some lighter peach today in Bernat SV and Caron one pounders Azure and Cape Code Blue. I was trying to use the colors called for in the book and I hope the 2 blues will work okay. Couldn't find any teals except one...RHSS Dusty Teal.

I tried to make #22 Angel in I Love This Yarn Soft Blue but it won't crochet into the same size as the Caron's...Nope! Can't make it work. :( I hope the Bernat SV will work as far as the size goes; I think it will, I hope it will! -- /\ (praying hands)

So, I hope some of you guys are working on this. If so, give me a yell, post some pics and I will too after I take 'em!

:manyheart:hug

I'm gonna do this CAL waiting for someone, at least 1, hopefully more, to join in or until I finish the afghan. I'll keep posting my progress hoping someone notices it! :lol

I'm working on #1 now, Honeycomb in the Bernat's peach which is lighter in color than the Caron Pounder peach. But it's heavier in yarn size (I don't know the proper term for whatcha call it.).

Anyway, the I hook made it waaaayyyyy too big so I frogged a few rows and switched to the H hook and it's working out nicely in the width. Guess we'll see about 20 rows ahead about the length.

Oh, forgot to mention! I changed from a 5dc cluster to a 3dc cluster...not as much work...lazy!!! And the clusters puff out nicely! A little more space between them, that's all.

:manyheart :hug to the next person to read this thread!

Hi,
I got this pattern off "LeisureArtsLibrary.Com" about 2 weeks ago. You pay for it and print it at home immediately. I am going to do this in the "ME" CAL. However, I will also correspond in this CAL also if someone is still interested.
