Anybody wanna make a hat a week with us? It'll be fun! Come on, guys...it's a great, fun way to use up some of that STASH! You'll have LOTS of great Christmas gifts :santa or you can donate them to charity :flower at the end of the year!
Jump in at any time. We will be posting a "hat of the week" that is always optional. You can make the hat posted or make another hat of your own choice. The new hat for the week will be posted on Sat. or Sun.
We are very laid back and don't really have any "rules" as far as posting requirements or even which hat(s) to make. Just make what you want, when you want, and we always love seeing pictures of your completed projects!

I'd like to join, mostly because I've been hat challenged for a while now. I can't seem to get the hang of actually making a hat that fits! Would we make our own patterns, or would we work on the same pattern? I'd kind of like to do a mixture of styles, and both summer and winter hats. I'm very interested.....

I originally thought we'd each do our own thing, with the group basically motivating us to make our hats each week...but now I think it might be better for all of us to make the same one, and that could be helpful for those who have trouble with a particular pattern. We could take turns choosing patterns, or I could pick a pattern each week for everybody to work on.
This is brand new and still in the planning stage, so please let me know what you think! :scrachin

Croshay,
I know you do some neat hats. Honestly, I'd enjoy trying one of your patterns.
There's other patterns out there that I've been wanting to find an excuse or motivation to try. Like this one: http://www.manidifata.it/InRegalo.cfm?Cod=69
problem is I dont speak or read italian.
And somewhere I saw a little skullie made with a pineapple design. Can't find it now.
Re: hats fitting: My family all have big heads (in more ways than one? ) and then thick hair on top of that so handmade hats are about the only way to get things that fit.
Oh.. and I saw a frog hat somewhere that was just too cute. and at one time I was making a smileyface hat. I think it's still sitting in a basket somewhere waiting to be rescued.

I'd be more likely to jump in if it's optional to do the weekly pattern - I like making Dot's UBW Hat to donate and this would help keep me on the ball making them. My vote would be to maybe post a weekly pattern but allow people to join in and complete whatever hat they wish (in other words, leave it optional as to whether everyone has to do the same hat). JMO though!

Count me in. I'm actually shooting for 2 hats a week for a charity outreach we are doing at our church. The pattern I'm doing is similar to Dot's UBW one also. I would be interested if it's optional to do a pattern of your choice if you don't want to do the featured hat.

I'd like to join in and like the option of using our own choice of patterns as well. I make baby hats all the time to donate to the hospital and purchased some patterns last month that I would like to get on the ball making... havingthis cal would get me going.

Are there any rules to "crochet alongs" like there are for swaps?
i think i would like to try this out, because i've never made a hat before and i would really like to. Are crochet alongs open to everyone? :hook
PS, i think it would be cool to post a pattern for each hat, but have the option of making your own hat. I would like to see some of the patterns ya'll plan on using.

Hello again, my fellow hatmakers! :waving I'll try to answer all the questions at once. This is my first time to coordinate a crochet-along, so I'm still learning. Thanks for being patient while I get this thing off the ground!
We'll always have the option of making whatever hat we want each week, and I won't even keep record of who's doing what, so if somebody's busy and doesn't get one made, no big deal. I make hats for charity anyway (with a goal of 100 by Thanksgiving), so I just thought this would be a fun way to get others involved.
I can't even promise I'll post a hat pattern every week. I haven't been a pattern writer in the past, although I did make up my first pattern last night! :yay I'll be glad to share that one with you all after I work it up again to make sure there are no errors in the pattern. (I haven't even written it down yet.) Do you all want/need me to post patterns each week?
So let's go ahead & get hooking :hook and I'll share a link with you to get you started, in case you need a hat pattern. Dot's UBW - which I think is definitely "W" but not "U" :wink is one that somebody mentioned, and I've made lots of these. They're quick and easy, and you can use any kind of yarn you have on hand. You can also very easily adapt the pattern to make a child's size hat. (Let me know if you want to know how I do this.) You can find the pattern at http://patbythehook.blogdrive.com/archive/35.html and while you're there, please take a look at some of Dot's other great hat patterns. We'll probably end up making a lot of them by the end of the year.
Let's go ahead & try to get our first hats done by Saturday or Sunday, and I'll try to post another pattern on Sunday or Monday for the next week.
If you have any questions, please feel free to AIM or PM me.

Well as long as no one is keeping count then I would love to join! The only worry I had was what if I couldn't get the hat done in time or if the patter was too difficult for slow, novice crocheter like me! But since those are all taken care of then I'm jumping on board! :D

I have already made 2 ear flap hats this week and made 2 newboy ones last week and tested a skull cap for jimmi lu last week also...
I love making hats but I have to crochet a little different because my pointer fingers got the bleach pen stuff on them and they are a little sore and peeling, I react to bleach and amnonia really bad...

I agree with the UBW hats! They are easy, quick, and fun! I have made 4 so far... one of them was a mistake, ended up fitting my 3 year old daughter instead of adult size, but she loves her hat that matches Grandma's hat! The last one I made I used a bulky weight yarn and a worsted weight yarn (held together) let me tell you, it is WARM!!!! Anyway, UBW hats can be made in a few hours and the mixture of yarns you could use is really only limited by your imagination! UBW hats are a great beginner hat!

Ok, due to the fact that I have so many other projects going on right now I buckled down and made the UBW hat tonight. My family has big heads so I altered it a bit by adding an extra round to make the widest part 48 stitched instead of 36. Here is the link to the finished product. I now wish I had made a better yarn selection. It kind of looks like a huge peppermint, but at least it fits and it sure feels warm!!!

I love this idea....I was thinking of crocheting hats from my local cancer care center as my Mother passed away this past July from breast cancer. All the patients as well as the nurses were so nice to my mother and I thought that donating something other than money-which I have done in memory of her-would be a great thank to. Even the nurses can wear them.
I like the idea of a pattern posted each week as well as having the choice of doing one of your own as well.
I most likely will use the posted pattern since I dont really have alot of crocheted hat patterns, I have more knitted hat patterns in my collection.
This idea will get me not only motivated as well as encourage me to crochet those hats and have alot to give to the center at Christmas time.
Count me in too!
Thanks so much for this great idea Croshay:) BTW, I love your name;)
I am going to get started on Dots pattern right away!

Bren, I like ear flap hats, too. I wish I could show you all the one I made for my toddler. It's bright pink and has ear flaps, and I did a couple rounds of sc's with Twister yarn right above the ear flaps...then I made her a matching pair of mittens with the Twister yarn around the cuffs. It's an adorable set and people comment on it everywhere we go.
Hope you're getting over the bleach on your hands! :hug

TINA - You're doing the UBW hats in "a few hours"? Hmm...I can do one without the brim in about 25 minutes and then add another 10 minutes or so for the brim. Are you having trouble with the pattern? :think
JEN - I'll try to post patterns each week or maybe every other week. I get SUPER busy at times, so I can't promise I'll be able to do it every week. But I'll do my best, and I'll try to get into the habit so I'll remember.
Also, about the child's version of the UBW Hat - on the round where you increase to 36 stitches, I only increase to 30 stitches, and I only work 7 rounds of dc and then 1 round of sc...and I haven't been putting cuffs on those. I've made 2 like that, and they actually fit my toddler...so I need to improvise again and make a size in between that one and the adult size.
GINNY - Loved your red and white UBW hat. I made a candy basket similiar to that (one strand of red and one strand of white WW yarn) at Christmas that turned out really cute. Thanks for posting your picture. I hope everybody will post pictures of their hats when they can.
LISA - Sorry to say I don't have any idea where to get a wig stand. Maybe a beauty supply store or even a beauty college could tell you.
MICHELLE - I'm so sorry to hear about your mother. I also lost one of my best friends to cancer this past September. It stinks. :worried
EVERYBODY - I forgot to mention there's also something else that I do differently on the UBW hats. On the next to last round, I TURN so that my last 2 rows face the right side when the cuff is folded up. On the first row after I turn, I do that row of dc's in the back loops only (as you're looking down at the hat, with the right side up) to make kind of a ridge where the hat folds up. Hope that helps.
I also wondered if anybody will be knitting :knit any of their hats! I'm working on a knit hat now for my hubby, but I'm gonna write up the pattern that I made up the other day - crocheted :hook - so I can share it with you all...so that'll probably be the pattern for next week. :yay

Also, to the person who asked about the head stand --Lisa -- Check in you telephone book for a wig store, they sell the little styrafoam heads -- Or I saw some on Ebay a while ago -- Do a search for styrafoam head and you will get some results.

I like this idea, too.. although.. what is a UBW hat? I've been making beanies and newsboy hats and giving them away as Christmas presents. I average about a day or 2 on a hat. Here's the newsboy I made, although I pulled it down a little over my ears, so it looks like a toque.
http://img.meetup.com/photos/member/1/4/2/member_540322.jpeg
This hat goes pretty quick and is easy to do. I was wondering, though...what type of yarn do you all use to make hats? I live in SoCal and although it doesn't get too cold, it does get warm. The one I made in the pic is a mix of acrylic and wool. I'm looking to make a few more for family in Canada...What do you suggest?

Good morning, everybody! :hi Glad to hear some of you are already busy on your hat-a-week. Here's a cheer :cheer for the ones who've already finished their first hat for our crochet-along!
I'm painting my kitchen today, so I won't be online much. I'm hoping to have it done by the time my hubby gets home so I can surprise him. I'm scared to death of heights, and I've already had to take a break once from the ladder just putting the tape around the ceiling...so wish me luck...this might take longer than I had thought. :blush
MINWIFEOF4BOYS - I don't know about a button design. I'm not a computer person, but maybe someone else here knows more about that. Also, you mentioned that Marlo has a cute kid's hat pattern on her site. Would you mind posting the URL?
SSWJ - Sure we can knit our hats! I'm not trying to enforce a bunch of "rules" but just make this a fun crochet-along so we all end up with a bunch of HATS at the end of the year. :wgrin I'm working on a knit hat now for my husband, and I had forgotten how SLOW knitting is compared to crocheting. :eek
KTORNATOLA - :welcome to the group...glad you decided to join us!
KARIN4CHRIST - I don't have a digital camera either, but I always enjoy seeing everybody's pictures. If/When I get the job I interviewed for recently, a digital camera is near the top of the list of things to buy. :wink I don't know anything about the knifty knitter loom set...maybe you can fill us in once you get the hang of it.
AZIANDOLL - The UBW is a hat that we're working on this week for our crochet-along. You can find a link to the pattern at http://patbythehook.blogdrive.com/archive/35.html. I couldn't see your newsboy hat real well from the picture but please keep posting pictures of your hats when you can. Sorry I can't advise you on what kind of yarn to use; I usually use Red Heart yarn because of the price and availability. Maybe some others here have more experience with different yarns, and you could also post a question on the Yarn forum on this site.
TINA AND GINNY - It's fine that your UBW's are taking longer than some of the others. The main thing here is that we're having fun and making some great gifts or items for charity.
THERESA - How cool that you can whip out 2 UBW's in less than an hour. I also think it's an ideal pattern for charity. We could always work on these in between or on the weeks I don't get to post a different pattern.
My personal goal for hats this year is 100 by Thanksgiving, but we'll see how that goes...it's early yet... :wink
Well I guess I better get back to my kitchen...I don't think those walls are gonna paint themselves. :wink

Here is my first UBW hat. It is more purple than blue. Made with RH purple and variegated blue & purple from my stash. I added a picot edging - thus I am calling this me Goober hat (Remember Goober from Andy Griffith? :D )

I rarely make hats cause of the size issue and when I do, I dont' typically use a pattern. I've not come across charities that take hats, a hat a week is 52 hats!! What charities are you all finding that take hats?
I like the idea of posting patterns from time to time, but options are always good in my book. Hats are a good way to use up yarn, but I think before jumping on the band wagon I would like to know a charity where we all could donate our hats so we know they are actually wanted and used. Not trying to be a downer folks, but none of people I've had close touch with as they were going through chemo wore crocheted hats. Ball caps some, scarfs LOTS.
Currently working on scarfs for The deadline for The Red Scarf Project for The Orphan Foundation of American is coming close, and they are really really behind the eight ball with the number they have and the number they need.
Would like to join in, but not just now and would like to know where to send the pile of hats once done, charity wise. Open to suggestions folks.
Thanks for the posts.:hook

I know that homeless shelters take hats and scarves to hand out during cold weather. Also many churches have homeless outreach programs.
I know that shriner hospitals take hats (along with many other homemade items) to hand out to their patients.
Pineridge takes them, too!
I think one would be surprised at the number of organizations that take caps and hats.
Good luck to everyone! Fantastic idea!:cheer

Hi everybody! :hug Hope everybody is having a nice and productive day!
Cheryl - Loved your Goober hat...the colors are great, and I like the edging you added.
Tina - Sorry I don't know of any newsboy patterns. Maybe someone else here will know, or you could post a message in the Seeking Patterns forum.
Jen - Thanks for the button you made! Now to show you how computer UN-savvy I am...what do we do with it? :think Copy it into our signature lines?
Marnie413 and Patty in MI - :welcome to the group...glad you joined us!
Schcrochet - We're just finding our own charitable organizations locally. My suggestions are Red Cross, homeless shelters, and maybe churches that have programs to help the homeless or low-income families. I'm sure there are more, as well.
Lea and Tina - Thanks for posting links to other hat patterns. I put them both in my Favorites, so we'll definitely get to them.
SSWJ - I'm with you...these are cute and warm, NOT UBW. I think we should call them our CAW hats instead. :wink
Good job on getting your Week 1 hats done, guys! :clap Sorry to say I haven't finished my husband's hat yet this week. I spent all day yesterday painting my kitchen...and now I'm SORE from head to toe. :( I've got a couple errands to run this morning, then I'm gonna try to sit down and knit :knit this afternoon and finish that up, then I'm gonna try to write up the pattern for the kid's hat I made up last weekend so we can all work on that next week.

Thank you to whoever it was that posted the vertical striped hat. There's a knitted "prime rib" hat on the web and I've been really wondering how to recreate it in crochet. It will be a bit before I get to it, but I'm excited to see it.

Thank you for the kind words Croshay....I am sorry to hear about your friend as well and you are so right, it does stink. Its a nasty disease that tears up not only the person who battles with it but also those around them.
I finished my hat for this week the night I started it but havent taken a picture of it yet. I will try to do so soon and post it.
This really got me going on the hats....I have a real soft spot for preemie babies and read alot of info about preemies and micro preemies. Its so sad and there are so many hospitals that need micro & preemie hats so I have been knitting and crocheting them to donate to one of the bigger hospitals here in Michigan. I made 15 different hats/caps on Wed and plan on doing as many as I can each day.
So I guess I have turned this CAL into As Many As I Can Make A Day project which isnt all that bad.
Thanks again for getting me motivated and my creative juices flowing again:D

Michelle - Glad to hear you're so excited about your hat project and that you're getting so many made. 15 in a day...wow! :applause
Lisa - How's that tooth? I had the same problem a year or so ago. A toothache is very painful. :worried Not to mention the expense of getting a tooth fixed. :eek When I was adding up our medical and dental expenses for the year, I could hardly believe how much we spent out of pocket, after insurance deductibles. My only explanation is like your blog said, The Lord Provides.
Everybody - I didn't want to lose or forget any of the suggestions you all have been making for patterns to use, so I compiled them into a list and I guess we'll just work our way down the list together. So if you have more suggestions, please feel free to post them, and we'll work on them in the order they were posted.
I've enjoyed everybody's pictures. I wish I had a digital camera so I could show off my hats, too. I've made about 12 or 13 so far. :clap
The hat I made up the pattern for last week fits a toddler, and I'm going to try to write out the pattern for both toddler and child sizes. Maybe we'll even do toddler one week and child another week.
I got about half of the child-sized hat crocheted last night but then got busy with other things, so I'm gonna try to finish that today...or is it tomorrow?? My little one got me up too early and I don't know yet which day it is! :morcoffee

My tooth is "ok".. they can't start fixing it till Feb. 1st. BUT the dentist did file away the sharp edge so that I won't macerate my tongue and gave me some Vicodin (synthetic codeine) to use at night. During the day I'm using either Aleve or Motrin and while I'm uncomfy.. I'm not in extreme pain. I'll get by. :) Thanks for asking. And yes.. it is expensive. I'm just trying to be thankful that I still DO have teeth. :D
The pictures of the hooded scarves are on my blog in a post back in February 2005. But I'll try to post them here too to save ya'll the trouble of digging.

I didn't take a back view of the Red one.. it's the same as the blue, just solid and solid color tassel. I'm pretty sure I used the pattern at lionbrand.com to make these.
I personally like the solid color best, but was trying to use up scraps for the Patriotic. This is my daughter modeling about a year or so ago. She was mad that I was making her model.. that's why the strange expressions. These were in a sack in my van... hope they're still there. :lol

I like making hats and have made some winter hats for charity. Some of my charity hats are similiar to the UBW hats though I kind of followed my own pattern. I have done light and lofty mixed with various worsted weight yarns and also baby clouds mixed with bernet coordinates. I would like to be able to make some stylish hats for myself, but I have problems making hats for myself because I have a small head. Children's patterns would be a little small on me, I think and are don't have the styles I am looking for. I have been able to make beanies and plain winter hats for myself. Basically I just try them on my head after each row to determin when to stop increasing (and just stich even) and when to finish off. Basically I am currently limited to hats that hug my head and are just simple crochet with no stich pattern.
If I joined would people be able to help me make the adjustments?

Lisa - Did you find the rainbow baby ombre yarn you were looking for? I saw some at Hobby Lobby yesterday (Caron, rainbow baby ombre) but on the ones I saw, I couldn't find a dye lot. So I doubt that's much help. Also, I love your hooded scarves...they look so cozy and warm...but if you were thinking they're in a sack in your van...from the looks of your daughter, she may have taken them to college with her so she could dispose of them for you. :haha
Country Bumpkin - Liked your UBW, and your hubby looks so proud to be your model! Even if it saying it matches his hair makes him admit he's getting gray :haha which is something my hubby WON'T do...he'll say he's getting WHITE hair but not GRAY. Go figure. :haha
Ilah - Sure, we'll be glad to help you if we can. That's part of the fun of a crochet-along, we'll all be doing the same thing (usually) at roughly the same time, so we can all help each other if needed.
Everybody - I noticed the messages have tapered way off the last couple days. I hope people have just done their hats for the week and will check back over the weekend for the next pattern, and not that they've decided to leave the group.

Still here. Working on a scarf for the Red Scarf Project at www.orphan.org and getting ready to make photos of my hats.
Croshay.. if you need a digital cam.. two suggestions. 1) Join freecycle.org for your area and see if anyone has one to give away. 2) The very first digital camera we got was very very basic.. bought to make photos for ebay. I think I paid 10.00 for it. It's called a JamCam. Unfortunately the company either no longer makes them or has gone out of business. It's not the easiest camera to use, but you can't beat the price. You can still find them here and there. It's basically a digital camera for kids.
Everyone's hats are looking sooo good. Mine are showing my strange color afflictions.. but that's ok too. Someone else has to like bright and strange color combos. :lol

Ginny those with the link name "one" and "two" are the Staten Island hat...Very simple...!
The others in my photo album are my own designs with the exception of the cream and green scarf and hat sets which are also out of the box...oh and the preemie cap isnt mine.
So glad I purchased that box....well worth the 20 bucks!:D

I think I got a total of 12 hats done this week. :clap I made 6 UBW hats... they work up SOOOOO fast. I made 3 following the pattern and then I used two strands of baby weight yarn and an L hook to make 3 toddler ones. I also made a granny square hat (wanted to try that out) and a couple of other hats. All of the hats I'm making are going to be donated to a project at our church called World of Warmth. I have a total of 28 hats now.
I took pictures with my digital camera, but can't find the cord to plug to download them. :angry I'll post them when I find the cord.
I'm not working on any more hats now (except my hat a week) for awhile. I want to make scarves and start hunting down purse/tote patterns for the purse/tote swap.

Red Heart Mexicana and Red Heart in a solid purple held together. I don't remember the name of the purple.. but it's one of the deep toned ones. Glad you like it. I tend to like vibrant colors, espescially this time of year when the weather can be so drear.
P.S. Your sig line gave me a giggle.. 1 down, 51 to go.. :lol

YIPEEE :clap I found my cord. Here are the hats that I made this week. I actually had a total of 14... once I got them out to photograph I forgot a few that I had done.
First up... my UBW hats. I added some ear flaps to one of them. I had thought I had only done 6 UBW, but I did 7.
http://www.homesteadblogger.com/uploads/h/HarvestHouseKeeper/1278.jpg
Next up are 5 hats that I worked on. Three of them (The gold & burnt red & varigate) are the same pattern, I just changed up the coloring/rows a bit. I acutally have another one in this pattern... it looks like the gold/burnt red on the left except I changed up the colors to be gold & green for my dd who likes the Packers. The hat is in her room though and she's sleeping so I didn't want to disturb her.
The brown in the back is the granny square hat that I did up tonight in-between making supper. The blue hat is one I made up myself and added ear flaps, to keep those kiddie's warm.
http://www.homesteadblogger.com/uploads/h/HarvestHouseKeeper/1275.jpg
Finally... a grey hat for my dd. This started out with a pattern... can't remember from where but by the time I finished up my 11 rows of sc, I ended up changing the pattern and came out with this.

Questions on the Mitered Beach Ball Hat:
How do ya'll read this pattern.. do we work in the backloops for only the first row or for the whole hat?
I only did the first row in blo, and the hat is rather small for my head. I'm having to add at least another whole section.
Also, the pattern doesn't tell where to make the color changes.. I'm doing it where you change from 30 to 25 or 26 stitches.
What do ya'll think (those who are doing this pattern)?
I think I'm going to do it again, only use hdc and see if I like it better. This sc version is "ok", but not my favorite hat for sure.

Samantha's hat started out with this pattern http://bythehook.blogdrive.com/archive/204.html , Dot's EL Brimmed Hat. I eneded up trying to work the pattern but got frustrated, frogged some of it and then ended up doing my own thing for the rest of the hat. I don't have the hat in front of me and off hand I can't remember exactly what I did, but after the middle section I just sc enough rows to roll up.

O.kay... duh, I don't have the actual hat in front of me, but I did have picture. It was all done in sc and then for the middle section I did 1 row of sc, ch 1, sk 1 sp. Next row was hdc, ch 1, sk 1 sp., next row was dc, ch 1, sk 1 sp. the middle (4th row of middle) was all sc and then I just went back down through what I had done before.... only backwards.

Sometimes things look so much better after you start making them...I will give it a whirl:) and see what happens and I promise I will keep an open mind.

Hi Croshay....she is technically due Jan 23 but my DD has gone to the hospital 3 times for premature labor since the middle of Dec...the last time we went was last Mon and her doctor said she has started dialating and he didnt think she was going to make it to the 23rd.
We are ready anytime for her arrival...we have all the neccessary baby things and alot of extras:lol set up for her.
My DD's baby shower is on Sun and I predicted that she would have either on that day or on the 17th...so we shall see:D
I made her christening dress and bonnet and am almost finished with the matching blanket.
I just started a blog last night so I can post pictures for everyone to see my things. At the moment I only have a couple of entries, my DD and her DH's wedding pic is there. I am hoping to take some pics of my finished projects and post them later on today:yay

Ktornatola - Glad to hear you love your beach ball hats. It doesn't seem like there was a whole lot of interest here in making that one. I have a couple questions for you about them. (1) Could you show us a close-up of the brim and/or tell us how you did it? I think I prefer the ones with a brim. (2) Lisa's question from yesterday...How did you determine when to make your color changes? I thought it was when you go from 30 sts down to 25, but that would make skinny little stripes, and you only used 3 colored sections...so please share with us how you did that. :think By the way, I like the colors you chose...reminds me of sherbet!

Thanks for asking. She is doing very well, surprisingly everything becomes very routing very quickly with diabetes. She can do and eat anything that any other kid can we just have to watch her more closely and give her insulin of course. OK, after seeing Ktornatola's "Beach Ball" hat I've decided I need to give this a try. But I'm a little pattern challenged with this hat. Let me see if I understand it correctly.
You do one color for 24 rows, the second color for another 24 and then the last for 24 - is that correct? Which would mean this hat isn't crocheted from the top down but instead as one strip which you would seam up the side. Is that right? And where you're dropping stitches and picking them up helps with the shaping? I hope I've got this right or I'll end up with a tri-colored scarf. :)

First of all, thanks for all the compliments! :2hug I will try to explain the best I can how I worked the hat.
1) The brim was simply 6 rows of sc around the bottom of the hat. I used the 3 colors in the hat....2 rows of each color.
2) I did 1 color for 24 rows, then the other colors, 24 rows each. April explained it pretty well up there ^ :)
And April, yes, you do the hat in strips and then sew the seam. The pattern says to sl st it closed at the top too, but I sl st the seam and then sewed the hole closed.
I hope that helps everyone! If you have any other questions, just ask!

Hi Kim,
One more question:
Is the whole thing worked in blo, or just the begining chain?
I've almost got it done, but working in both loops, and only making 3 repetitions, it's rather small. I'm thinking I should've done blo for the whole thing.

Lisa,
I'm doing both loops and mine seems to be coming out alright. In fact, I was thinking last night, "Gosh, this looks kinda big," and I'm only half way done. What yarn are you using? I'm using a combination of Red Heart SS and Caron Perfect Match.
I'm trying to figure out a way to sew the top closed. I was thinking I'd just run a double strand of yarn through the top loops and pull it closed but I don't know if that's a good idea or not. I'm far from being an expert on putting things together. Hence my love of hats and afghans. :)

I finished week #2 hat yesterday. I did it in a very boring, uninspiring taupe color. I figured that since I'm making the hats to donate I better make some for men too. I contacted Samaritan's Purse to see if they would accept donations of crocheted hats. They sent me back a very nice email stating they would take children's hats to put in their Operation Christmas Child gift boxes. The hats must be made out of new yarn not recycled. If anyone was planning on donating some or all of their hats and wants to donate the children hats to Samaritan's Purse let me know and I'll post the address to mail them to. I'm still going to look for other christian charities to donate my adult hats to. I'm sure that there are lots of these charities. Happy crocheting everyone. And I love seeing the pictures of the hats you are making. One day I'll get a digital camera and post some of my pictures.

Well I'll be...I've been on a hat kick for the past two days...I've literally made 6 hats in two days...no wait, 7 hats...I started with a simple pattern from Lion Brand free patterns, made a happy mistake with it, figured out my "mistake" and then ran with it and ended up designing a few of my own hats...and then today alone I made two hats based on the Stitch Diva free pattern for their Gatsby hat...used a variety of yarns with the hats...3 were with Lion Brand Home Spun, 2 with Lion Brand Fisherman Wool and the two Stitch Diva hats were made with a German yarn that's more like cording...
I haven't taken pics yet, but when I do, I'll post them in here...

I made my beach ball hat last night. It's cute, except I don't like the way it looks at the top. It's kinda puckery, like it's too full. I was going to put a pompom on top but I couldn't remember how to make them! http://crochetville.org/forum/images/smilies/scratchhead.gif I tried twice and they looked terrible. They were real thin, not full enough, and I couldn't seem to get the yarn tied tight enough around them. How do you make a pompom?? http://crochetville.org/forum/images/smilies/scratchhead.gif
I did mine a little differently; I changed colors after 12 rows. I made it in blue and white, alternating the 2 colors every 12 rows. Then I added 4 rows of sc around the bottom for an edging. My husband even said he liked it and wouldn't mind having one like it for himself in different colors. Ugh...'cuz I didn't like making it very much...I did the whole thing in the back loops only and I didn't think I'd EVER get done. http://crochetville.org/forum/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif I wonder if using a hook one size larger would make this large enough for an adult. Did anybody else try that?

I undid the seam at the top of my beach ball hat. I just don't like the way it looks. The directions say to crochet in blo up the side and across the top...well there are no sts on the top to work in the blo. How did you all do this?
I'm just about ready to throw this thing out the window. :irk

To make pom poms, you can either use the two cardboard circles method described several places online. Here's one:
http://www.ehow.com/how_5887_make-pompoms.html
another:
http://www.fiber-images.com/Free_Things/How_Tos/how-to_make_pompom.htm
OR.. you can do as I do..
I find a sturdy piece of cardboard or plastic (last time I used a tiny tupperware lid) less than 3 inches wide and wrap my yarn around it many times (at least 200.. last time was 150, but with doubled yarn). Then thread a yarn needle with some of the yarn and draw it all the way though and tie it off, being sure to catch all the yarn you wound around the cardboard or lid. Leave long ends for sewing to your project.
Then go to the opposite side of where you tied it off, and CUT the yarn. There's your pompom!!!
If it's too floppy for your liking, trimming the ends will make it stand up.
I read somewhere online that people use a fork to make pom poms.. I can't quite visualize that.
Hope this makes sense.

Hurray for my son for modeling!!! (the only way I could get him to do it was to promise not to take a pic of his face.. :lol)
I changed every 12 rows, but had to add another section to fit our big heads. I'm tired of this, although I like the edgings or brims or bands ya'll added, I'm putting this away for now (and I can see my pompom needs evening up).
It's done in RH Claret and Gold.

Ktornatola - How did you finish the top of your beach ball hat? Yours doesn't look so odd-shaped like mine does, and the directions don't make sense to me on how to finish the top. Yours looks like the sections are all even and come up nice and even on top...mine doesn't. :scrachin
Lisa - Thanks for the help with the pompom. I'm going to try it now. I hafta admit, I can't imagine why anybody would wanna make those little tiny ones with a fork...the BIG ones are frustrating enough for me. :lol

January 14, 2006, 03:32 PM
Well I tried 2 more pompoms and they're both pathetic, too! I think part of the problem is that I'm not getting the yarn tied around it tight enough. This is making the yarn flimsy instead of standing up more, and the pieces are pulling through! I guess I'll have to wait 'til somebody else is at home with me, to hold it real tight for me.
I've never heard of somebody so POMPOM CHALLENGED!! :rant

I can't wait to start week #3 hat. I started doing a child's hat on a Knifty Knitter Loom today and its turning out very well and is easy to do. Don't you just love it when you try something new and it turns out well? It kind of makes up for all the other disasters.

Everybody - For Week 3, how about if we try the Tri-Colored Cloche at http://www.caron.com/projects/ss/cloche.html? I know at least one of you have already made this (I think Lisa), but it's the next one on the list! Hi everybody
I have decided to join this cal because I love making hats last week I made
this hat (http://www.crochetme.com/Feb_Mar_2005/patt_ribbon_cloche.html)its by marlodc. It was a birthday present for my niece which is today
she love it when I show it to my sister her mom she told me she wanted one
too.So thats what I'm going to be making for next week another one. The one
I made is Jo-Anns Sensations Angel Hair in light green. I really like making it.
but I made a few changes. I stop the increases on round 7 after that on round
8 and 9 I did them with front post stitches on round 10 I did it in hdc, the
next round I did it like on round 14 in the pattern I think it came out pretty well.
I almost forgot I also made her a small purse to carry her cell phone, wallet and
keys I made it the like the cloche she love it too. When I saw her reaction to
her presents I felt great.:manyheart

The next few hats are from a foreign company called DROPS. These patterns might be a little challenging.. as in some of them are in british terms (ie, what they call double is our single ~i think~). Also, I have NO IDEA what the yarn they recommend for the patterns is like.
I have no problems with not adopting any of the drops patterns for our project.. I'm just throwing things out there. :)

Ok, here is my week 2 hat. I used the Staten Island hat pattern from my "Little Box of Hat and Scarves". I really liked the pattern, but I usually have to go up a hook size and I automatically did this and now the hat is too big for the person it was intended for. Oh well....it's still a fabulous pattern and I'll know next time not to go up a hook size :lol

I don't know if I can keep up with 1 a week though since I am working on designing my own baby dresses in thread and also testing patterns for www.crochetgarden.com and now have the opportunity to sell some of my own designs to a fancy schmancy boutique but I figure if the patterns are quick enough I could get them done in an hour or two.

Ginny - What are you taking in school, and are you going for a degree? I'm majoring in Accounting and working on my Bachelor's. I'm actually really fed up with my school and thinking of transferring to the University of Louisville next semester. Liked your hat...reminds me of a granny square...bet it's quick and easy.
Ktornatola - Thanks for the tip on how to do the top of the beach ball hat. I'm gonna try to wrap that one up after I get some schoolwork done this morning.
AngelFairy and LeaderLadyK and Anna - :welcome to the group. We don't have any posting requirements (messages OR pictures) or even requirements on when/how many hats to make...just do what you want, when you want, and of course share messages and pictures if/when you can. :hook We all love seeing each other's projects.
Lisa - Thanks for the suggestions (and for posting the link for the newbies)! I copied them all onto our famous to-do list. I only clicked on the first link so far, and I really like the ripple hat...very different! I like ripples and one of these days I'll finish that ripple cape I've been working on for myself. And as much as I hate to say it :eek I think that hat would look cute with a pompom on top. Just don't try to hold me to that 'cuz it might end up out the window along with this beach ball hat.
April - Already done with Week 3?! This girl is fast! Loved the color of your latest hat...and Lydia is still lookin a little pale...do you ever think of gettin her a little sunshine? :laughroll

Checking in to let you know that I made the WBU hat last night in about 45 minutes. (I was extremely tired so it took me a little longer than I would have liked.) Anyway, now I am only behind one hat. I will make two this week. Maybe another WBU hat and then I love the hat for this week. The tri-color one.
Later today when baby is napping, I will try to post a picture of the Wbu hat made last night. I have three days left to clean my house and pack up everything I need for 7 months into 5 suitcases. (yes, I only get 5 suitcases for 7 months) Needless to say, I have been sorting and rearranging since last Monday and I really have no clue how I am going to get it all in. Ginny - How far along have you gotten with Univ. of Phoenix? I've got my Assoc. degree so I think that makes me a junior, but I don't know right off exactly how many credits I have. I do know that if I transfer to U of L, I'll lose some of my credits. That's my main hesitation, but I'm going to schedule an appt. with the transfer department and see how it all works and how many credits I'll be able to keep. I think online classes are ideal for people with very busy schedules <like me!> and this quarter I'm taking ONLY online classes. I'm only in 2 classes since my goofy school lost my registration and I ended up getting into my classes late...and I'm still struggling to get caught up...one of MANY reasons why I want to leave my school. :irk Also, thanks for volunteering to coordinate a hat exchange. DH works for Texas Instruments, and they closed down the plant in Kentucky where he was working. Since I'm a SAHM he was feeling worried about being without any income and took a job TI offered him in Texas.
I really miss being home, mostly we don't have any family here and I miss spending holidays with them. Texas has it's good points, but after all is said and done, I'd rather live back home.
My mom got her Master's from Sullivan Univ, and my uncle got both his BA and Law Degree from UofL. I almost went to UofL myself, but ended up going to UK.
DH is finishing his BA through an online university, Saint Leo out of Florida. It's been a great program, and it's fully accredited. It's classes are on the quarter system, which is great! Only 8 weeks per quarter and you're on to the next classes. I **wish** my classes had been on the quarter system, cuz 1/2 way into the semester I was sick to death of school. LOL! :yuck

I'll be starting week #3 hat today. I can't wait. Somebody, I think Croshay, asked how my hat turned out with the Knifty Knitter. The loom was very easy to use and the hat knitted up very quickly. I used the blue loom and made a child's sized hat. I tried it on my four year old and could barely get it on her head. (But then again she has a BIG head. Believe me, it felt big giving birth to her). The hat fit my seven year old daughter just right (she's the one who is slim all over - including her head!) I will definitely make more hats on the Knifty Knitter.

I'm in the DFW area, otherwise known as North Texas. (Which is strange since the panhandle is MUCH more "North" geographically speaking.)
My biggest regret is that I haven't seen as much of the state in the five years we've lived here. I've been as far south as Waco (to see the Dr. Pepper Museum), and across the state from Texarkana through Amarillo on the way to see family on either side of Texas.
But I really, really want to go to Sea World and Nasa, and the beach. Unfortuantely, DH only gets on vacation a year, and we're always using it to go see family. **sigh** That and a lack of funds has kept us from doing the fun stuff. :cry

I'm getting a little confused. :think :think :think Is there an official hat for each week or is the point just to make one hat a week and post a picture of it? I see some posts that list the hat of the week, but it also seems like everyone is making different hats. Also in some posts it is not clear to me if a pattern is for the "official" hat of the week or is a suggestion for a future hat of the week. We are in week 3 (I think) but way more that 3 patterns have been given.Or maybe we do what ever hat we want each week and the hat of the week is only a suggestion?
I was also wondering what day of the week the hat of the week is announced. If I knew that I think it would be easier for me to follow along.
Thanks

I think it would be easier to find the weeks hat pattern if each week had it's own thread? I can't imagine wading through 100's of pages by the end of the year... kwim?
If for instance someone wanted to find the link to a hat that was given on say week 44 or around that time period it would be much easier to find the weekly threads vs. all the sifting through on one main thread. Just an idea?

Jen – I also have some family members that got degrees from Sullivan; my husband, my mother, and my mother-in-law. It’s not what it used to be...I don’t know what their deal is, but they’ve definitely gone downhill. I’ve even heard of a couple businesses that refuse to hire Sullivan graduates...now that’s pretty bad. I’m with ya on the quarter semesters though. That’s what we have at Sullivan, as I guess you know...but if I transfer to U of L, it’ll be longer semesters. I need to find out how long it will take me to finish up my degree...I don’t know if that means it will take longer since the terms are longer, or if I just need to take more classes each term. If/When you guys get back to Kentucky, do you know what city you’ll be moving to?
Ginny – I’m probably a second semester junior, too. The only problem is that if/when I transfer to the other school, I’ll lose some credits and have to basically take more classes to make up the hours.
Anna – Liked your hat...also the next one you’re going to make. You probably won’t regret not making the beach ball hat. I never could get the top of mine to come together like I wanted. I’m gonna hafta twist Kim’s arm to send me hers that looks perfect on top so I can get a good look at how to fix it. :wink
AngelFairy – Here are the hats we’ve done so far:
Week 1 - Dot’s UBW (or CAW) hat from http://patbythehook.blogdrive.com/archive/35.html (http://patbythehook.blogdrive.com/archive/35.html) (1/1)
Week 2 - Mitered Crocheted Adult Hat Pattern – striped like a beach ball – from
http://helpinghearts0.tripod.com/id30.html (http://helpinghearts0.tripod.com/id30.html) (1/8)
Week 3 – Tri-Colored Cloche from http://www.caron.com/projects/ss/cloche.html (http://www.caron.com/projects/ss/cloche.html) (1/14)
Please feel free to make or skip any of them
Karin – Thanks for the info on the knifty knitter. How long would you say it takes to knit a hat on there?
Anna – I’ll be glad to add that hat to our list, but I didn’t see a link to the pattern. Can you give us one? Maybe I just missed it?
Ilah – We do have a particular hat for each week, but it’s always optional. Sometimes the gals choose to do a different hat of their own choosing. It’s completely up to you how you want to participate. I’ve been posting a new pattern on Sat. or Sun.
Theresa – I had the same thought about having different threads, but I thought it might be more confusing for people to try to remember which hat was which week, then trying to find that thread. I kinda just did what the other CAL’s do and left them all together, at least for now. Also, some people will be wrapping up one week and others will be starting the next week, so I thought that could also cause confusion.
TepperWear – Good idea on posting all the links at one time. I need to come up with a way to give all the info to the newbies instead of having to look it all up and type it out each time. I wonder if we can post it somewhere so that it can just be edited each week, with that week’s hat added. And maybe the answer is to have a thread for each week. I’ll give that some thought. :think
Everybody - I finished my Week 3 Cloche last night. I did it all in black and autumn red Caron SS, but I had to add a couple extra rnds to make it long enough, and I also added a rnd of sc's at the end in black (last rnd in pattern was in red) to give it what I thought was a more finished look. One of these days I'll be able to post pictures for you all to see. :rolleyes I think I'm up to about 15 hats that I've made since Christmas.

I did my week 3 hat last night. But it doesn't look right for some reason. I must be getting daft because the directions didn't make sense to me on round 11 and up. It turned out okay I guess, but not like th picture. I started with a burgundy and tan at the top and then went to navy. I thought then it looked like a flag, so I just continued with the navy instead of switching back and forth.
I also agree that maybe the week's hat could be posted on the original post so we always know where to find it?

My hubby's grandmother asked me to make some hats to donate to our church for the homeless. There is another lady that makes them but she does not want to make sizes that fit men, only women and children so I have taken on the men size hat project. I figured since I am making a hat a week anyways, I might as well whip out some in bigger sizes :) I am sticking to the UBW pattern since it fit my hubby's big ole noggin. lol. I will try out the patterns posted but if you see my posting pictures of the same ole UBW pattern, you'll at least know why. Here are 2 I made on Saturday. I'll count them both as my week 3.

I would love to see how your Week 2 hat turns out. I was trying to make this pattern for hat swap parnter and after 3 tries finally gave up. :rolleyes It was an easy pattern but although I usually crochet too tight, my hats kept ending up WAY too big. :huh If you are interested, here are some links to my attempts:

If you don't copy this (to harddrive, flash, cd, whatever) or print it out, it will be gone tomorrow.
It is made with double ended hooks.. and the afghan stitch, so it might not be for everyone. But it sure is pretty.

Ginny Its funny you mention that it turned out too big because I am about halfway done with mine (past the inc. section) and I was thinking it was kind of large. I will wait until I get to the end and see what I think. Your third attempt looks pretty close. Was that a good one?

Here is my week 3 hat modeled by my oldest DD Katie. I thought this thing came out big so I rolled the brim. I started with the Wine and Tan and then added the navy. Once I did that I thought it looked like a flag, so I just stuck with the navy. I added the star buttons.

And I did a couple more UBW hats - I used white RH and RH baby variegated. I like the way it came out.

I just got my March 2006 Crochet! magazine and it has the CUTEST hat & scarf combo in it. I think I might make it for week 3 instead of the Caron since I already made it.
Only problem is.. I dont have the yarn it calls for, and my Walmart sure doesn't have it (we're in the boonies and selection is blah) and I don't wanna drive 40 miles to a decent crafting store.
Must be time to raid the hidden stash. Does anyone else store their extra yarn in the bathtub or is it only me? (We all prefer showers).

No, it's the pink with white trim, Cloche and Scarf. But it does have flowers. I don't remember a green and white stripe in this issue.
I remembered I had some cotton-ease and started working it up last night. Either my gauge is waaaayyy off (a definite possibility) or someone has some really tiny heads. I had to do an extra increase row again. I think I remember the pattern saying the hat was 20" when complete. I must find my tape measure and measure my head.

Lisa - Umm...nope...can't say I've ever stored my yarn in the bathtub. :ha And about that hat pattern that says it's 20"...according to some info I saved on hat and head sizes...that should fit a 3-10 year old child. So I'd say their pattern is really small.Everybody - I love the Week 3 hats you've shown us! Also the UBW's some of you have been making, too!

Everybody - I thought I'd go ahead and post these hat/head sizes that I copied from "somewhere" online (even though I can't remember where I got 'em). Maybe this will be helpful.
Head Size Chart - knitted or crocheted hats should be made about 1- 1 1/2" smaller than the head circumference, as the hat will stretch. Height includes a brim. They can be made taller if you want a large brim.
Preemies:
1 -2 lbs
Baby's Head Circumference is 9" - 10" (so hat circ. should be about 7.5" -8") Height of hat should be 3.5 - 4"
2 - 3 lbs
Circumference 10" - 11 1/4" Hat height = 4"
4 - 5 lbs
Circumference 11 1/2" - 12 1/2" Hat height = 4 to 4.5"
5 1/2 - 6 lbs
Circumference 12 1/2" - 13" Hat height = 5 to 5.5"
Newborn
Circumference 13" - 14 " Hat height = 5.5 to 6"
Baby - 3 to 6 months Hat height= 6.5 - 7"
Circumference: 14" - 17 "
Baby 6 to 12 months Hat height = 7.5"
Circumference: 16" - 19 "
Toddler - preschooler (12 months - 3 years) Hat height = 8"
Circumference: 18" to 20 "
Child (3 - 10 years) Hat height =8.5"
Circumference: 19" - 20 1/2"
Pre-teens and Teens Hat height 9-10"
20 1/2" - 22"
Adult Woman
Circumference: 21 - 23 1/2" Hat height = 11" - that includes a roll up brim
Adult Man
Circumference: 22 - 24 1/2" Hat height = 11"-11.5" - that includes a roll up brim

Someone posted on Crochetville a "guideline" for making hats in the round. I'll add the post later when I find it. But basically she said to keep increasing the circle until it would fit on the recipient's head (child/adult).
My question is, if the general rule is 19 inches for a child's hat, does that mean the flat circle should be 19 inches, then start sc around to make the "sides?" (Am I being clear as mud?)
Generally, I perfer hat made in the round because there isn't any seam. I just need to learn how to make a flat brim. I'm not keen on the roll brim.
Croshay
January 18, 2006, 12:33 PM
Jen - Here's how I do a flat brim. BTW I'm not the best at explaining things but I'll TRY! If you're working from the top down, like on the UBW hat...what I do at the bottom of the hat is TURN after the last round...so you'll now be working back UP the front of the hat...then work a couple more rnds of dc's & a rnd of sc if ya like...so that lays flat against the hat instead of rolling up. Also, when I do that, I do that first rnd in the back loops only, which leaves sort of a ridge around the bottom of the hat and actually helps it lay flatter than if you go into both loops. I hope that makes sense!
I've got another hat pattern that I like a lot...but you make the brim first...and it's like 12 or 13 stitches worked back and forth, back and forth for like a zillion rows, then you work in the side of that big long strip to go up the hat. (Hope that makes sense too.) But it doesn't lay as FLAT as I'd like for it to, so I need to work on that. It's a copy from a magazine and I'm guessing it's still under copyright, or else I'd post the pattern here for everybody. It's called a watch hat or cap and it's basically dc's with stitches here and there that go around the post of the stitch below, to make like a striped pattern going up the hat. OK, so I told ya I wasn't good at explaining! I think that's my favorite of the ones I've made so far.

You posted this before on the UBW post earlier, and I tried it on both hats and loved it! But somehow between then and now I forgot all about it. LOL!
I still need to figure out the circle dimensions for in-the-round hats though. If we could find out the measurements, it might make adjusting hat sizes a lot easier. :cheer

I saw your post. However, is that for the crown or forehead? I guess I'm hoping that if I can figure out the measurement for the flat circle (before the rounds of sc) that it will be easier to fit hats for people. KWIM?

Hi! I've been reading this CAL every day, and it's been great! I haven't posted anything because I don't have a digital camera (and wouldn't know what to do with it even if I did). However, I have been crocheting hats, so I guess I will officially join the CAL.
The first one I made was from this website:www.coatsandclark.com/fun_and_free/yarn/lw1269.htm
I've made a few of these hats before.
The second one was the Ugly But Warm Hat--love that pattern!
The third was the Mitered Hat--too big for anyone living in this house.
And I also made another ubw hat. They go so fast, you might as well use up all the scrap yarn on these.
So that's what I've been doing, in between two baby afghans and the Crochet Dude's Afghan from the Crochet Calendar.
I love this site!:manyheart
