Well since so many ladies wanted to make this purse, Deb and I decided to host a CAL for it! Neither one of us has done a CAL before, so we decided to do one together. Thanks, Deb! If anyone has this pattern and would like to join us, we'd love to have you! :manyheart

Tina

Although this CAL is closed, I wanted to put a link in here. I just found out that this pattern is now available at Courtneys' Etsy store (http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=5856725). (The original designer of the Fendi bag pattern, found at the Craftster site.) The only thing Courtney asks is that you send her a convo (conversation/contact her) on the etsy site, to request a pattern, so that other people can buy it, too. :)

Alisha- I am just using Bernat, in 'Berry', since that's all I have on hand. I'm on row 22 so far. :hook

I'm in too! I like the pink/black combo but I think I'll reverse it and do the bag in black and see if I can find a hot pink ribbon for the bow. I'm sure I'll make more than one and try some different colour combos but at the moment I have some black that would be good for this so I'll try that first.

Hmmm... No, but I was thinking about looking for one soon, and a little circular metal thingy, too... (?? What is that called?) to look like the real bag.

That will be pretty in Rowan cotton!!

For the Fendi tag, I'm going to check those new charms they have for cell phones, etc. They have those all over now, WalMart even has them. I bought one for my phone at Ice and they were 1/2 off. Not sure what I'm going to do mine in yet.

I have to finish up my son's afghan, which I will likely be able to do by the end of next week. After that, I'll be able to start this one!!
Great idea!

I found some more handles in different colors and sizes here:

http://www.joggles.com/store/catalog/index.php?cPath=356_358_456

They also have some really cute buttons and the charms that I think you guys were talking about if you look under the beads and charms section. I want to order a dark brown leather handle, but can't decide how long it should be..... I think I may have to finish the purse and see, it could be really cute just carried at the elbow, but then I have 2 kids and that's a pain in the ***.... Oh well, whatever. I need to go paint my bedroom now, my furniture is coming on Monday (I didn't leave that 'till the last minute, now did I?)!!

This is my first CAL too! It's fun!!
I just started my bag this morning on the bus and I'm using some Bernat Softee Chunky (black) that I had. Even though it's a chunky weight it seems to be working really nice.

Is anyone going to line their bag? I'm trying to decide if I need to.:think

Chiscrochetcrazy
January 5, 2006, 05:27 PM
I'm on rw 55 I'm using an off white color of woolease worsted weight which is too thin and it's making the bag limp :( I figured next time I'll use 2 strands held together and I love the handles yall are talking about but for this one I may just make it a clutch.

Mom w/a Motif
January 5, 2006, 06:08 PM
It does say to use two strands held together, but if you used a chunky yarn that would work too. I think I might line mine. I need to get some fabric first though. I am finished with the flap part of mine. I had to take a break to play house and wash the dishes (how come it's no fun in real life?) :)

Thanks for that link kad2mgd! I'll go check it out now...

I just started mine this afternoon too, and am making good progress...However, I am redesigning the pattern to hopefully make mine look more like the original without knitting it. I also ordered croc handles from joggles.com...hopefully they will be here soon! I am doing my prototype in Simply Soft grey heather which is what I had on hand. I plan to make one for myself in wool of some sort. Will post a pic when I get my prototype done!

You guys are off to such a great start!!!!:clap

I'm trying to finish a shawl before I tackle this purse. I had a Dr's appt. today, so I stopped in JoAnn's and Micheals.:blush Couldn't help myself! Anyways, I did get some leather purse straps for my Fendi bag, and a glass bead medallion.

Question: Since Suede is thicker than worsted weight, can I use 1 strand, or should I use 2?

Chiscrochetcrazy
January 5, 2006, 07:44 PM
I would think 1 would work fine. The yarn used to make the pink one was baby yarn so I thought I'd be good with 1 strand of worsted but it's just all floppy.

Instead of using 1 ball of yarn use 2 but you crochet the same way you're just gonna have double thickness understand. You're just making your yarn thicker :)

I was wondering if anyone had seen Carol Duvall the other day....I cant remember which day this episode appeared but anyways, she had a really cute knit purse demo on her show.
Its not nearly as cute as the Fendi one but it might be an idea for another CAL.
Here is the link to the pic and pattern...I hope this works:)

http://www.hgtv.com/hgtv/cr_needlework_knitting/article/0,1789,HGTV_3263_4026487,00.html

I requested the pattern as well and would love to join in on this CAL as soon as I get the pattern.

By the looks of the number of request received, it may take a bit to get it and so many of you gals are so far ahead of me.

I do have a question....??? Is most everyone converting the pattern to crochet? Are we able to knit this bag too for the CAL?

Chrome Kitty
January 6, 2006, 07:38 AM
Thanks for the link, Sunshine. That definitely helps a lot. I wondered what the back of the ruffle looked like and also how it looked open. After seeing those pictures, I think I may have to modify that pattern a little . . .:think

Now I'm rethinking my color scheme because I really like the black outside & pink lining. I was planning the opposite, but I'm not really a ruffly pink purse kind of girl but I think I could be a black ruffly purse girl (oh no - do you think that's what people will call me?:lol )

I think I'd like to knit this bag after crocheting it, too. I don't know how to attach that ruffle, though. Maybe I'll knit the ruffle and crochet it on the purse. The 2 strands of Rowan cotton are working up great, the bag should hold its shape really well as it's so stiff, it almost looks like the knitted bag!

I am doing my ruffly differently, so it looks more like the knitted bag with the ribbed ruffle. Rachel, you might try this if you want.:)

For the ruffle, I am working up til row 5. After you finish row 5, Ch about 8. (Or longer??) Turn. Sc in the eight chains.

At the end, ch 1, turn. Sc all the way back (BLO), sl st to next sc on row 5. Does that sound clear? I hope so. I know it makes sense to me, but I'm doing it, so... ;) All the images should be clickable so you can see up close. Then, this is what it should look like when you get going after a while:

Debi- It might look like I am done, but I'm not!! :lol I still haven't sewn in the lining, I just have it all pinned to the purse. I went ahead and started the ruffle anyway. *Someone* took my black thread- so until I find it, or buy some new thread.... I won't be able to finish this purse...

I had one question, though. I'm on row 45 and I noticed on the pattern at row 2-58 there is a note in brackets that says "...until last row (Row 38)". Is that a typo? I guess I'm a little confused because I'm doing 58 rows, right?

I also wanted to add in regards to the 'two strands' discussions, if it helps, I'm using a chunky weight and It seems perfect. I haven't found that I need to use two strands.

I'm not really a ruffly pink purse kind of girl but I think I could be a black ruffly purse girl (oh no - do you think that's what people will call me?:lol )

You are too funny :lol If you want to be a black ruffly purse girl, then you go! Girl! ;)

Shelena- I am planning to knit it after I'm done crocheting it. I don't know what the 'rules' are for the board, if it were up to me you could knit it, but... :shrug

Hi Sadie- I think it is a typo, I think it's supposed to be (Row 58). I got confused when I was doing the ruffle foundation row, she says 'Continue SC on the outside of the purse. Crochet on SC on each peak and one SC in each valley of the ribbing rows (I think that's just to let us know when we get there, on the sides of the flap). *Turn at the third row of peak ribbing and SC along the peak rows.* ???' I just ignored all that, crocheted all around the flap, and the back of the flap, too (so you are crocheting in a square). I think the ruffle is supposed to go all the way around the flap. So... If anyone gets stuck... Here is a picture, I hope you can see it clearly enough (I hate my camera--either too much light or not enough...) Anyway..

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y12/TPryst/th_c6b73ed3.jpg (http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y12/TPryst/c6b73ed3.jpg)

See how the ruffle goes all the way around the flap? (The pic is clickable, too)

Mine is heather gray with the silvery pink lining...I am totally not following the pattern...Mine is done in regular single crochet for the body, not back post SC, so it is going to be smoother/flatter looking than the pattern and will probably be bigger than the pattern as well...I am one of those people who has to carry everything but the kitchen sink in my purse, so I wanted mine a little bigger...Will post a pic as soon as mine starts to look like something and as soon as I can drag DH away from his train layout...I have major construction going on just behind me!:lol:lol

I just finished the 'flappy' part last night (row 71) and I am going to work on the ruffle today. I hope to finish by the end of the weekend and then do the finishing touches like lining, handles, etc. next week (I have to go and hunt some handles down). I can't wait to get it done!!!

Rachel- I don't know if you saw this post, it was a couple pages back, but I tried to do a 'tutorial' on how I did my ruffle. I did it different than the pattern. I didn't get any handles for it, yet. I might order some if I can't find any around here. And, I am sewing it up with two strands held together, right sides together, then I'll flip it right side out.

Thank you, everyone. Now on to see if I can translate it into knitting! :knit

I also wanted to add, when you are done and have sl st'd the last remaining sc, you can either sl st the two sides of the ruffle together, or sew them together. Then, for the tie, I chained about 170, then sl st'd in each ch back and wove it through the loops. Then you're done.

Kathy, if it's a bulky weight yarn, it should work with a single strand. Otherwise you should probably use two strands held together. Someone else tried using one strand and said it was floppy. I guess it's up to you. :shrug

I'm not sure, even after looking at the picture. The pattern says to use two strands of worsted weight (or one of bulky, either one). All together I used two 8 oz. skeins of worsted weight. The second skein I didn't use all of, either. So I would say 16 oz or less. It doesn't say how many yards it is, sorry. :(

Hope that helps. :think

Kathy, I've used one strand of LB suede, which is labeled "Bulky 5". I'm also using a smaller hook than reccommended on the yarn label, for a tighter stitch. I'm on row 46, and so far it's making a nice, fairly tight fabric. Why don't you do a swatch to see which look you prefer? Then you could undo the swatch and reuse the yarn.:)

Ok, I have a question...I started my Fendi today and am using Simply Soft in two colors of gray because I had an older skein of soft grey and a newer skein of grey heather...I love the look the two different strands give, sort of a shiny grey.

Anyways, my question is...what does everyone think of using just one strand of simply soft instead of two? I am not sure if my bag is supposed to be as stiff as it seems to be feeling.

I am also worried about the weight of the bag when I am finished with it. It seems like it will be too heavy.

I am wondering if everyone else's bags are feeling....stiff or kinda still soft and flexible?

Shelena- The pattern says to use two strand worsted weight held together. Alisha used one strand and hers turned out floppy, she said. I think it's supposed to be a sturdier bag. Michelle for a purse I'd rather have it more stiff than what mine is I'll have to line it with a thicker material. No problem, Tina! I bought the yarn fairly recently so had no problem with the dye lot. And I did find your previous thread before I went to the store today and I made sure to get enough to finish. I also got some material for the lining. I chose this red bandana pattern (I know my bag looks grey in the photos but it's actually black). I thought it might be kind of neat to have a pattern on the inside.
And I agree, the ruffle does take awhile but it is totally worth it! It really looks like the Fendi ruffle. Thanks for sharing your ruffle pattern Tina! :hug It makes the bag.

I am tackling two new things at once - I'm making the purse from a recycled sweater! I've always loved the color and feel of the sweater, but it's a turtleneck and I've decided never to purchase that style again, they just make me feel like I'm CHOKING. . . .

It was a nice sweater from JC Penney made of 100% cotton. I used the "How to unravel a sweater" article I found here and it went great! I have two huge balls from just the front and one sleeve, and I'm starting on my purse - I'll unravel the rest later.

I'm using an "I" hook since I usually crochet a little tightly. There's not really anything about gauge in the pattern. My purse is about 14" wide - is that pretty comparable to where the rest of you are???

Here are some picture of what I have so far - lots more to go to just finish the body. . . .

I think the real (expensive) one was 9 x 13, so that sounds right. I'm making mine much smaller and I'm using a different stitch, changed the ruffle and the eyelet round, and am making it the shape I think the original was done in instead of the way the pattern says. So basically I'm not following the pattern at all, but I think it's turning out to be pretty close. No pics yet, but I think it'll be done this week so I'll post some then if I can find someone at work with a digital camera I can borrow since mine is being naughty.

My lining is a cowboy theme, for a little whimsy.

How's everyone coming along? Is anyone planning on a closure?

Thanks Tina! Yes, it's the LB Suede. And for the handles, I just used a large darning needle and whip stitched it on.

I wish we had another croafts store near me but I do have a purse I bought for $14 that I don't like much so it may be the giver of the handles :lol I agree I didn't want to order any because I thought I might not like it.

Great job on your purses, ladies! I ordered my handles last week from joggles.com, and they arrived today...I got the 27" faux croc ones, and they are REALLY nice - like something you would see on an expensive bag! I think they were $8-9 each or about that. I was holding my breath waiting for them to come in, just hoping they would look good and be of good quality, and I was not disappointed! I will definitely keep joggles.com on my list of sources when I need purse handles again!

I am about to start the ruffle on mine, but so far I like the way it is turning out! I also found the exact yarn I was looking for for my knitted version. I couldn't believe my LYS had the exact color I was looking for! Now to find some really special lining material for the knitted version. I got Elizabeth Lavold wool silk for the knitted version, and it was definitely more expensive than Simply Soft!:lol:lol Will post a pic of my bag when I get the ruffle done!

Well, now that I've finished the few little projects I was working on and am just about done with my Sunburst Poncho, I will hopefully start this next week. Mom w/a Motif
January 11, 2006, 05:54 PM
I don't know, it's up to you, I guess. RH or Bernat will make a sturdy fabric. I would think Simply Soft will make a softer one. (I personally like Simply Soft, too, I am making an afghan out of it in my spare :lol time...)

Tina

January 11, 2006, 08:12 PM
I am using Simply Soft for my first bag, and I am actually surprised as how well it is coming out! I used two strands for the body of the purse and the flap and an I hook because I crochet pretty tightly. I also did regular SC instead of back loop SC throughout and didn't follow the pattern as far as the foundation chain or number of rows. I switched to 1 strand where the ruffle part starts in the pattern and am working the ruffle like Tina's instructions instead of the pattern. It is surprising how heavy it is going to be when finished, but It seems to be very sturdy, not stretchy at all! I am almost half done with the ruffle now (man, that part takes forEVER!!) As far as how much yarn I used, I had two 7 oz. skeins of SS that I used for the double strands, and it looks like I will probably have enough left to finish it, but I bought an extra 3 oz. skein just to be on the safe side. I am also using a wide satin ribbon to match the lining for the lace and bow part instead of the SS chain or however you are supposed to do it. Anyway, will post a pic as soon as I get the crochet part done!

Me too. Mine seemed to start to straighten out once it got a little more length to it and then, like everyone has been saying, it straightens out when you sew it.
I finally finished mine last night except for the handles. The worst part for me was sewing in the lining and the fastener. I have to say, though, that I do not sew (except the odd button when I need to). But, I thought, "how hard can it be?". A lot harder than I thought. I had to re-do it a few times and I was using some very unlady-like language. But I finally did it and at least I learned a few things (mostly that I really need to learn how to sew). It looks pretty good. I'll post a picture once I get the handles on.

I am giving the pattern a try, but in knit. I was looking on craftster and found another way to make the bag. I'm thinking of frogging what I did and doing it again:eek She knit the piece in sort of an H pattern, so when you sew the edges you have a shaped bottem. Has anyone given that a try? It doesn't matter if it is crochet or knit. It really gave the bag she made a nice look.

kad2mgd
January 14, 2006, 02:01 PM
Well, I gave up on the crochet version and am jumping in with the knit one. I got some Lamb's Pride bulky in Lotus Pink and am doing a double strand for the body. I'm going to give that H shaped idea a try, that bag looked really good and I like the 3x3 ribbing for the ruffle. I had a friend who looked at the picture and she thought to do increases at the rounded corners in the purls so the ruffle would lay flatter. Good luck everyone, I'm off to (hopefully) sunny Florida for the week. Maybe I'll have pictures to post when I get back.

Like I mentioned in my last post, I am doing this totally different than the craftster pattern. One of the things I'm doing different is the shape of the bag. If you look at the side view of the black Fendi that Sunshine1977 (http://www.crochetville.org/forum/showpost.php?p=264911&postcount=64) posted, you can really see there how it was done. The front and back have an additional 1/2 width of the base's depth. I believe size of the real Fendi is 9" high, 13" wide and 2" deep. Using those numbers, the front and back would be 9x14" and the bottom would be 2x13. If you made it in one piece (without the flap), it would be 14" wide for 9", then 13" wide for 2", then 14" wide for 9". Here's a pic of what I mean:
http://photobucket.com/albums/c383/Chrome_Kitty/th_fendi.jpg (http://photobucket.com/albums/c383/Chrome_Kitty/?action=view&current=fendi.jpg)

Then you would sew the sides together (A) and then the bottom of the sides to the bottom of the bag (B).

Oh dont worry Debi:hug ...its alright as I wasn't in much of a hurry since I had to finish my granddaughters christening blanket this weekend cause my DD's baby shower is tomorrow and I wanted to give it to her then. I went to Joann's yesterday for their big weekend sale and found the perfect lining for my Fendi bag. Not only does it coordinate, but it was 70% off!

Here's a picture of the lining and my partially finished bag.
Bag and Lining (http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/da_fleschs/detail?.dir=f1dc&.dnm=93a8re2.jpg)

I am not yet halfway around the ruffle. I am using the modified ruffle provided by Tina which looks great, but is taking a really long time. It also doesn't seem very ruffle-y. . . .

I am also going to add pockets to the lining (probably 2) and a pocket to the outside front of the bag, so it ends up under the flap. I have to have pockets for my stuff, esp. my cell phone - or I'll never find it before it goes to voice mail!

For the ribbon, I am either going to chain the same color yarn or possibly make a tube of the lining fabric to "create" my own matching tie.

Still haven't decided on handles or a closure yet.

Did you work up through row 5 of the original pattern? Mine didn't seem very ruffly either and then I went back and worked through row 5 and it made it a little better. I know it takes a long time, but I think it looks better than the original..

Well I started again. This time following the directions like a good girl...lol. Things are going much mroe smoothly with 2 strands of plain old worsted weight. I had to give up my fun sparkley yarn, but I think I'll survive. Probably.

Yes, I did! For once, I actually followed the instructions. It seems like it should be flufflier since your version calls for working two rib rows per SC. I think it will be OK.

Mary Ann - Keep going...you will be surprised at how full the ruffle gets the you get farther long...I had the same thoughts when I first started the ruffle, but my turned out very "ruffle-y"!

Whew, I wish I had one of those crank knitting knobbies!! Making one as long as I want is gonna take forever!!

Laurie:hook

Hee hee- That is why it is called 'I-cord'; the 'I' stands for 'idiot', because of what you are reduced to after knitting a few yard of it. (I read about it in one of my books.) I do have one of those little tubular knitting jobbies, and it seems like it takes just as long...

I went to my local Michael's today loooking for a mag. and to get some Fimo, and what did I find?!:eek Yarn on MAJOR sale. I got two skeins of Moda Dea Sassy Stripes @ $1.50 each but that's not the best news! I've decided to do my Fendi in Lion Suede--I got 3 skeins @ $2.50 each!!!!:cheer So my bag will only cost $7.50! The way I am going to do my lining is to turn my bag wrong side out and cut a piece of fabric the same dimensions as the bag (plus 1/2" on the sides for seams and plus 1" on the top to turn under), sew the sides together, check the fit by placing the lining in the bag, wrong sides together, press the seams and press the top down 1" or to fit, then hand stitch the lining to the bag around the top. I am also going to put a couple of patch pockets in mine (cut a piece of fabric the size you want your pocket, plus 1/2", press the edges toward the back side and sew it to the lining) with velcro closures. Hope that makes sense!!

OMG, that is sooooo cute, I love the colors you used...great job:cheer I bet the Bernat yarn makes it sooo soft as well.
I am still working on the ruffle of mine(done in LB Suede) I had to take a break from it as my hand was starting to hurt quite a bit.
I am curious as to what you used for your strap??? It looks like you crocheted your strap...if not, can you please tell me what you used as it looks so smashing:yay

Hi Kim...I think I will try the coordinates for my next one...I want to make one for my daughter and her favorite color is pink so the coordinates would be great.
I think also that I am going to try to crochet my strap just like you did...I love the way it matches the purse so perfectly.
Thanks for the heads up on the strap:)

Here's mine. Again with these I didn't take the pictures & wasn't there to "primp" the purse after it got smooshed in the bag, so I have to explain that it's not lopsided. It really is shaped how it's supposed to be:blush. At the bottom where it looks like someone did a really bad job sewing the sides to the bottom and it made the stitches pull weird, well I can't blame that on the camera. That was all me:lol. But this one was supposed to be the prototype so I'll forgive myself for that stupid error.

http://photobucket.com/albums/c383/Chrome_Kitty/th_f5.jpg (http://photobucket.com/albums/c383/Chrome_Kitty/?action=view&current=f5.jpg)http://photobucket.com/albums/c383/Chrome_Kitty/th_f15.jpg (http://photobucket.com/albums/c383/Chrome_Kitty/?action=view&current=f15.jpg)

I started it with a really bright pink Wool Ease, and it was turning out great. I ran out of yarn and of course couldn't find that color anywhere, so this one is done in RHSS. The purl body was done with 2 strands & an L hook. The ruffle is one strand & G hook where I did 9sc up, 9 sc down & slst in same st at base, ch 2 & 7sc up, 7sc down & slst in ch2, 7 sc up, then 7sc down plus 2sc in ch 2 and slst in next st on base. The best I can give you right now for the purl stitch is this:

To do the purl, you'll have to know how to do the afghan stitch because it's almost the same, with a few little twists.

1. Chain as many as you want
2. Pick up a loop in each stitch, except go from the back of the chain to the front instead of through the front like you'd normally do with the afghan stitch.
3. Work off stitches as for normal afghan stitch.
4. Hold yarn in front of work and under hook. Insert hook through open space between loops. Put back loop on hook and bring to front of work. Yo & pull through. Repeat to end, working last stitch in same way.
5. Work off stitches as for normal afghan stitch.

Here's a close-up of a purl swatch, and here again I have to explain that the stitches are in even rows, but I think the photographer was holding it instead of laying it flat. Oh well, it will give you an idea anyway:

I requested it a couple of wks ago too, & emailed her this morning to ask if she is still sending them out. I'll post if I get a reply but I think maybe she got so many requests that she gave up sending them.

I wish I had thought to ask if it is ok to distribute the pattern. Since she is offering it free. She might appreciate a helping hand so she doesn't have to keep sending it by email.

Your purse turned out great ChromeKitty!! I do like that color (mine is the same) :) I've used 2 skeins of Brown Sheep Lamb's Pride bulky on the body of mine already and I'll need probably another half for the ruffle, I can't decide if I should use the bulky or worsted weight. I knitted mine and your afghan stitch looks identical to my garter stitch!! I'll post when I'm complete.

Donnalynn - I made mine from SS, double strand for the bag and single strand for the ruffle...I used 2 full 7 oz skeins and part of a 3-oz skein, so I would estimate about 16 oz... I did the bow part with I-cord, and that took quite a bit, so if you are going to use a chain, it might take a little less...Hope that helps!
