Have any of you ever been to one of the CGOA conferences? I'd like to go this year since I will be near King Of Prussia, PA but I wish I had more information about the event. The website doesn't tell you anything aside from a few pictures of past conferences.

I went to the one in Rosemont, IL in 2003. It was great. Great classes to choose from, lots of interesting people, a great market to buy stuff from, and lots more.
If you go, find out the supply list and make sure you have plenty of things with you for making your projects. I had a box of yarns, hooks and other things with me.
You will have a blast. I know I did. If you can stay overnight and go to the fashion show, do so. It's fun to see what people make and show.
I even met Lilly Chin at the luncheon. It's so great to go.

I went to the one last year in Oakland CA, had so much fun & learned a lot . I had a chance to meet several of my crochet cyber buddies, as well take classes with some of my favorite crochet designers. There were crocheters with all levels of experience & a good variety of classes. And then there is the Fiber Market with all the wonderful yarns, books, hooks, & more. A dangerous place if you are on a budget :). In the evenings, there various dinners & events you can attend. There were people busy with hooks & needles just about everyplace there was a chair or bench.

Thank you both. I wasn't aware that I needed to bring supples for projects. I KNEW I'd need to bring money!:lol

Bring a lot of money so there will be no regrets. They have so many venders, from handspun wool, handmade wooden hooks, all varieties of yarns, books, patterns, etc. Start saving your money now for it. :cheer It's just so amazing to wander through the hall and see so much all at one place. It's like you died and went to Crochet Heaven. It's amazing. :c9
I wish I could go to that one, but I guess I have to wait until it comes back to Chicago. :) Don't know when that will be, but I will be there. Maybe in another 10 years or so. Maybe I should start saving now.
One special memory I have, is that the money I used to go, was from my birthday, from my mother-in-law who passed away. So it kind of made it extra special, knowing it was a gift from her, my last gift. I miss her.

Hi Linda,
I'm sorry about your mother-in-law. My mother-in-law gave me a set of steel hooks in a small leatherette pouch that had belonged to her mother. I don't do much thread crochet but I love having them in my supply bag, sort of like a lucky charm. Mom is still very much with us and we often compare notes on crochet.
I guess I'll have to use some of the leftover yarn in my stash and save my craft budget for the conference!:idea

I just joined the CGOA! Woo Hoo! I'm hoping there might be some info about the conference in the packet I'm suppose to receive. But if not, I'm sure I'll benefit either way by joining.
Even though the conference center is 6-1/2 hours away for me, I too am thinking about going. Good way to kill a few vacation days... don't ya think?! :c9

Hi, girls. I am scheduled to go to the convention in July. I am thrilled! My husband and I are driving out from Wisconsin, but then he is going off by himself for a few days so I can immerse myself in yarn. Let's plan on getting together.

Sounds like we're getting a group! I will be in Freeland, MD, right on the PA line and about an hour from King of Prussia. Hubby wants to go but I might be able to talk him into doing some sightseeing in Philly! I hope we'll be able to get more info as the day draws closer. The website is so vague.

Yay! I've been thinking about this constantly since yesterday. :hook
I even made an Excel spreadsheet to compare the costs of different means of transportation! I could drive, fly from Burlington, VT or fly from Manchester, NH. I have a friend that is from Philly and I'm trying to talk him into a trip to see his parents in July so he could split gas $ with me.
I work for a large hotel chain and could possibly look into some discounted rooms...

I would love to go to this conference. I live in Maryland and it would be about a three hour drive for me. I am just starting to crochet (and I'm really enjoying it) but was wondering if I could benefit by going. Are these conference geared only towards experienced crocheters?
Roli
February 17th, 2006, 07:29 PM
Sidne, I don't know the answer to your question but I imagine that there will be plenty for inexperienced crocheters to see and do. From what I understand, there will be wonderful yarn and great gadgets for sale as well as workshops and a fashion show. I hope you decide to go. Where are you in Maryland?:think

I'm in Beltsville, Maryland. I'm already a yarnaholic so I could possible go deep in debt being in a room full of yarn and gadget exhibits! I frequent Joann's, Michael's and A.C. Moore every weekend. I just love the fact that they are not far from me. I know I would enjoy taking classses and seeing a fashion show. I checked out the CGOA website and the list of crochet classes scheduled for the show is not up yet. It says "Coming soon..." I guess I'll determine whether I'll go or not by the classes that are offered.

I would love to go to one of these but I won't be able to go to either one coming up. Both PA and CA are too far away for me. However, now that I think about it, my best friend lives in San Diego and depending how far Oakland is from there I could use this as an excuse to go visit her! :devil Ok, snap back into reality Donna! Where will you get the free time and money for this???? :(

Being pretty new to crochet, I'd never even heard of this show... so thanks to the person who started the thread. We've been to King of Prussia in the past, and it's a drivable distance for me. Depending on what else is going on this summer, I might just go to it. Some of the classes sound really interesting.

Hmmm, this will be my first conference, so I don't know the answer to that. I am hoping some of us can meet up. I'm sure there are nametags and I'll bet we can figure out a meeting place.
Has anybody decided on their classes yet? I've been too busy working all week to study the course listing, but hope to do that this week-end. This may be the only conference this rural Wisconsin gal gets to go to in her life-time, so I plan to take several. I'd also like to go to the fashion show.

I'll be deciding on my classes this week. As the conference approaches we can make more definite plans for a meeting place. We'll have to figure out the lay of the land somehow. Maybe DH and I can take a quick run up to PA ahead of time to see what the place looks like. DH is always up for a day trip!:)

I'm still not sure about a class or two but I definitely want to go to the dinner on Saturday night.
We could meet at the Cafe once we are inside the show. I cut and pasted 2 paragraphs from the site below.
Visit the Knit & Crochet Café on the show floor, welcoming you to rest your feet and purchase a rejuvenating cup of coffee or a cool drink of water.
Take fashion to the street — Chic Street — on Saturday evening with dinner, cash bar, a fashion show and a silent auction to benefit breast cancer support. Buy your tickets early; seats to many events are limited.

I'm planning to make my reservations at the Scanticon for Friday and Saturday nights. I've not seen it in person but it looks nice on the website and seems to have all kinds of amenities. It's within walking distance to the Convention Center. Also, we get a big discount if we reserve early.

I'd love to sit together at the dinner, Artemis!
I'm staying at the Hampton across from the mall on DeKalb Pike, checking in on Thurs. and checking out on Sun. I work for Hilton (Hampton is a Hilton brand) so I get the employee rate. The group rate at the two hotels listed seems very reasonable although I'm not familiar with the properties. It's great that they are attached to the convention center, very convienent.

Can we make it a table for four, five, or six?
I will complete my registration this week-end and book at the Scanticon on Roli's recommendation. I have a little trouble with a hotel whose name I cannot pronounce! But I like what Roli says about it.
Have you decided, BY&BH, what classes you will take?

I'm still undecided about the classes. There didn't seem to be any that I just had to go to. And the less I spend on classes the more that goes in the yarn/gadget/oh, I have to have it! budget. :hook

I was thinking of getting something from the Cafe Press specifically for the convention too!
My DH and DD are going to FL next week, but honestly I'm looking forward to this July trip more! A long weekend full of yarn and fellow crochet lovers vs. what could potentially be a very stressful week traveling with a 19 month old who typically doesn't travel well. :eek Oh yeah, and we're staying with his parents, who are very nice, but they are still in-laws!

My confirmation was not e-mailed "in a timely fashion" so I e-mailed them asking for it and it came immediately. I did get my first picks. Now I have to print out my homework.
I do think there is lots of stuff we will have to bring along: yarn, hooks, scissors, paper, pencil, reading glasses, etc. I heard of someone who brings their own light along, but you'd have to plug it in, wouldn't you? I'm getting old, but I don't think I'd need my lamp unless the classroom areas are really dark.

From what I've read on various blogs, the atmosphere is very warm and inviting. Everyone is "into" the same thing, so you already have something in common with everyone you meet.
If you are there alone, don't worry, many of us will be there without people we know. We plan to get together at the reception Friday night (free) and at the dinner and fashion show on Saturday (that has a fee). There are other places we can meet, too.

I think it's great that you are even considering it since you have never done this alone before. You'll find when you travel that most people are very helpful. I will be at the hotel with my husband, but he is going off on his own and knows I'll be at the convention day and night.
If you do go, we'll all help talk you through "hotel safety" and sit with you at meals and give you any other support you need.

CGOA is the Crochet Guild of America. Their National Conference is being held in PA in July. I wish I could go but it is just not going to happen this year.
You can see more about CGOA at their website, www.crochet.org (http://www.crochet.org) .

I went last year for the first time and had a great time. ... Spent way too much money but it was worth it. I don't plan on missing it this year. I've already signed up for two classes and have a room reserved in the hotel. Plus... I already know what I want to buy this year!!!! I can't wait.....

Yes, I'm eager too!
I read Crochet with Dee's blog this morning and she had a great suggestion on making up a three ring binder for each class so that you are ready to put in handouts from the classes. She also puts in the homework assignments and other information about the class.

I just bought the Crochetville tote and ringer tee so I'll be easy to identify. :P
I'm really looking forward to this! :clap
I should probably get started on my homework sometime soon. :blush

Roli, thanks for being the unofficial coordinator of this. I do hope we can have a nice tableful of Villagers at the dinner. It's going to be a wonderful experience...learning in classes, drooling over fibers, meeting new friends...I can't wait!
Artemis
Me too, me too! I'm saying this now because I can't always get on here and don't want to miss the post for signing up for the dinner. But I'm already registered to attend it so count me in! ;)

Here we are, approaching the conference and I CAN'T CROCHET! :yell My wrist is still in a brace and hurts worse than when I first injured it two months ago. I will see the doc next Wednesday but I might not even be able to do my homework to prepare for the conference. Perhaps I'll just be able to sit in class, trying to take notes in my cramped little script.:( Oh well, I can still go and spend money!:clap

What?!? :eek
Did we know you injured your wrist? What happened? I'm so sorry to hear this.
Let us know what the doctor says. We need to get you back in shape!

It's so annoying, Artemis. I was working on the dog bone mat found here: http://www.crochetville.org/forum/showthread.php?t=12855&highlight=bone
and I was using 3 strands of Homespun :yarn and a Q hook. I could tell that my wrist was hurting but I wanted to finish the project. Then, in pain, I made that crocheted candle holder for Mother's Day: http://www.wolfcrochet.com/page5.html
By the time I had finished it, I couldn't move my wrist. I've been wearing this brace day and night ever since and now I can't imagine what a doctor will do that I haven't already done. It's my own stupid fault, I know.:yes

Roli,
So sorry to hear about your wrist! But perhaps it will clear up soon with all of us wishing on that for you.
I am coming too, although I haven't chosen my classes yet. I know a lot of them are sold out already, but I am suer I will be able to luck into something. Not sure if I am coming Thursday night or Friday morning since my daycare just got fouled up, but I will get there eventually.
Looking forward to meeting you all,
Mary Beth

Great Mary Beth! Watch this space in a couple of weeks when I'll be doing a head-count to see who is going. We'll all try to meet somewhere.:)

Glad you are coming, Mary Beth!
Looks like I am coming without my husband, so I will need to make plane reservations to fly to PA. He's having back surgery on June 19th and the doctor said a three day car ride is not what he needs! He will be mobile and self sufficient by mid-July, so I can still come. My husband knows it's the highlight of my summer!
I, too, am looking forward to meeting everyone.

Oh Artemis, I'm sorry to hear about your husband. It's always nice to have hubbers along when coming to a strange city. I hope that he has a speedy recovery and will be able to manage things on his own while you are away.:yes
