Does anybody know if books pay more for designs than magazines? How would you go about submitting to a book? Any thoughts?
Thanks!

I have had patterns in magazines and one in a book. The magazine(s) paid about $70 for a pattern, the book paid me $200 for my pattern. I didn't know I was getting my pattern published in a book, though. I just entered a contest; I didn't win the contest but they wanted to buy my pattern and it ended up in a book. :clap So I don't know how you would go about getting published in a book. A magazine, usually write to them and ask them how, they will send you all the info you need.
Hope that helps :think

I'm getting paid $100 for a pattern for an upcoming book. The editor approached me about it, but I was browsing around Lark Books, a craft publisher, the other day and they have places where you can "apply" of sorts for different creative positions, including designing patterns.

I am getting paid $150 + yarn for a pattern design for an upcoming book. And I have been offered $100 + yarn for a pattern design for a magazine. I have no idea (b/c i am new to the paid designer world, too) if books usually pay more or not. I too was asked to submit designs for the book from the editor. I think my best move was to design free patterns for CrochetMe and NiceKnits, and opportunities seemed to pop up. Good luck to you, though! I'm all for more and more cool crochet patterns.

I'm just wondering if you get to keep the rights to your patterns, because that doesn't actually seem like very much, unless you can sell the pattern elsewhere at another time, or at least get to use it however you please.

Yes, a very good question - can you continue to sell items made from your own patterns once someone else owns the copyright? Or do you hold it?!?!?

It depends on who is accepting the pattern. I've had two opportunities where patterns of mine were used, one in which I got paid, where I hold the copyright. That won't be with every case though.

As a pattern designer, I don't think you should ever sell the rights to your pattern outright - especially not for $100! In the quilting world, most magazines will ask you to sell them exclusive rights to publish in their magazine for a period of 6 months to 1 year before you can do anything else with the pattern. And, mind you, this would only apply to the rights to publish in the magazine - not to print in anything else like advertisements, or to print the pattern in other forms like on package labels or on their webpage, etc. You need to be specific about which rights you are selling and for how long.
