Man, the hook is monstrous! :eek
With my usual pencil hold, I now have a tender spot at the place where the hook rests on my hand, where the forefinger joins the palm.

I finally finished the thing using the knife hold awkwardly. So, ta-da, my first-ever Q hook FO (my last FO was a size 20 thread project with a 1.5mm hook, so you can imagine........)

4 strands of WW held together. the lighter colour is Aran Fleck in RH SS, and the darker is actually a purple of unknown origins, but I'm guessing RH too.

Oh, and it's supposed to be a floor rug:P

big difference between thread hooks and a Q lol

good job.. i have a distinct hold except when it comes to my Q or larger hooks then i just hold the best i can with out making it rub a spot.. i have gotten better results though now that i have turn of the century larger hooks.. they are a little shorter and made to fit your hand better

Cool Swapna! Hey its practical too!!!

Q hooks dont really cause any rub issues with me BUT they do make my wrist ache in fact anything over a j does...weird huh?

Are you ready to make another rug?:P

I love using a Q hook, but it bother my wrist somewhat, probably when I use the thicker yarn.

Oh my gosh, I can't even imagine switching from a thread hook to a big ol' honking Q hook! :lol Nevertheless, your rug turned out great!

Beautiful Job! I love hooked rugs. Sorry about your pain though.

I've been pondering Q and larger hook designs for some time now and posted one solution in my blog that i came up with several months ago. I'm not convinced that there is a universal "fix" for pencil and toothbrush hook holders in a large hook design, but please take a look at what i did there and leave a comment about your particular issues. I'd like to work on something in this area, cause i like to make comfortable hooks and i enjoy making the larger sizes.
Of course an alternative would be to simply post your big hook issues here, like i see Three and Deneen did.

Oh, and i'm wondering if a handle that simply fit the palm, about oh the size of a golf ball, would be useful? I guess it would end up like what you might have seen in latch hooks. Bad idea?

That's a beautiful rug! I have yet to try a Q hook; the largest I've used is a P. The Q hook kind of scares me. :eek

Very pretty! I haven't used anyting larger than a N hook, and that felt huge after working with a #7 hook and thread.:)

what do you bet that we find a lot of folks will switch from pencil to toothbrush or steak knife grips for big hook use? From my limited exposure just from making hooks, i'm finding that the toothbrush or knife grip allows for more of the hand to participate in hook glomming (that's Deadman Crick-ese for "grasping"). Course that opinion's only based on very limited experience, but i'd sure like to hear more thoughts from all you seasoned hookers.

A rug is such a great idea. I bought a Q hook but haven't found a use for it yet.

I made a rug just like that for my parents. I used Aran in Red Heart and a shade of blue in Red Heart that I can not remember. Great job. :clap

Nice rug- I know what you mean about the changes in hook size- when I was working on xmas presents I went from using a 1.25mm hook to a 20mm hook- the 20mm hook seems monsterous anyway but after just having put down such a tiny hook the big hook jsut didn't seem real :lol

you know that don't sound bad . If you have to hold it like a knife then it would be easy to manipulate. I wonder///////////

I love the colors in your rug.
I enjoy using the Q-hook. A few years ago I had a pattern for a simple afghan using the big old hook and 4 strands of yarn. My hubby and I went on a road trip to visit friends 5 hours away. I made one on the way over and one on the way back. The driving time flew by--well for me it did.:) And I had 2 great gifts.
