The easiest scarf pattern is to simply do a chain as wide as you want your scarf then sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across, then just ch 1 to turn and sc in each sc across.
Keep doing that till the scarf is as long as you like.
If you want to try a pattern CPC (http://www.crochetpatterncentral.com/directory/scarves.php) has tons of scarf patterns.

Also, if you wanted to do a striped one, you could make a chain as long as the LENGTH you want the scarf to be, leaving long ends, do single crochets (ch 1, turn at ends of rows) or double crochets (ch 3, turn at ends of rows, ch 3 counts as first dc in row), and change colors either every row or sporadically. If you leave the ends long when you change colors, you can add fringe and not have to weave in the ends. Be sure to count your stitches so the ends stay straight. Just do as many rows as you want the width of the scarf to be. Have fun!

I like dc. You can do a simple dc scarf. Chain however many you want across and Ch 2 and then turn. Just do dc for as long as you want. Scarves are great for learning new stitches. You can learn stitches like the V-stitch and practice that by doing up a scarf.

Some put borders on their scarves...many don't. A standard shell border would like fine. That's when you do 5, 6, 7 dc in one stitch, then skip a couple of stitches and do a sc and then repeat the shell.
If you are just doing dc, you can make the count across even or odd. It doesn't matter. So if you chain 12 across and dc in the 2nd chain from the hook, you just do dc across.
Some people like their scarves wider....some like them narrow and some like them inbetween. So that's why all of us, just say "chain as many as you want across".
When you are doing other stitches, then you have to make some odd or even stitches depending on which stitch you do.
Hopefully, this makes sense and answers your questions. If not, you can PM me and I'll be happy to try and help.:manyheart

I like to do reverse single crochet for a border; you work just like regular, but go from left to right. This is very easy, and makes a sort of "rope" effect along the edge. It also doesn't require a specific number of stitches, as some other pattern stitches require in order to come out even. You could even do a row of single crochets in a different color for a border which is easy too. Or do a row of a fur or eyelash yarn for a border. I know you said you wanted to use regular yarn, but the possibilities are endless...

The Lion Brand website has some free patterns for scarfs. They have up todate patterns on their site. If you crochet to loose just try using a size smaller hook until you get the right guage. And there is a website called stitchguide.com that is great to check out for showing you how to do different crochet stitches.

I love the reverse single crochet for a border also. I find it is really great on baby afghans especially for little boys. It looks interesting and adds a great finishing touch.
I like the picot stitch for a finishing touch on baby afghans for little girls it has a girly touch.

My favorite fast and snuggly scarf is here:
http://deneens.blogspot.com/2005/09/snuggly-scarf-pattern-or-one-skein.html
It really does work up quickly, and it's warm and solid but still has an interesting texture to it. It's all single and double crochets -- just one single and two doubles in the same stitch, which makes a nice warm poof. I've made this out of Homespun a million times but also out of plain old acrylic worsted and it's very cozy. When I get bored with Vs and shells, I do this one.

Thanks, Hummywinger! I used it on a big bulky afghan I made with 2 strands held together, and a big hook (Q, I think) and it was just right. Made a nice thick edge because of the multiple strands. I bet it is great on baby boys' stuff and baby blankets in smaller yarns, more delicate. I'll keep it in mind for the baby afghan I'm doing right now!
